One of the better days on the NSW provincial circuit is Gosford Cup Day and it comes around this Friday with three blacktype events, highlighted of course by the Gosford Cup (2100m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (13:20) : Tooheys Maiden Plate 1000m:
Back Me: 10 Sleek (Bet Now: $1.80) looks the clear way to go here. Godolphin youngster that resumes after a 300+ day break, where she last raced at Beaumont-Newcastle in March and was far from disgraced. Trials leading in have been great, draws a soft gate and gets Craig Williams aboard. Safe way to go in the opener.
Big Danger: 2 Oxford Magic (Bet Now: $3.70) is a talented type that resumes for the in form Kim Waugh yard. He ran twice on the Beaumont track during the Winter and was far from disgraced in a couple of handy events. Trials leading in have been sharp to the eye, draws a soft gate and Clark steers without too much pressure on speed.
Long Shot: 3 Masterati (Bet Now: $7.00) resumes for Joe Pride and is the watch horse. Debuted at Canterbury in July when finishing down the track behind Russian Revolution, and we know what a cracking type he is and what he went on to do during the Spring. He too has looked the part at the trials. Respect any market push.
Race Two (13:55) : Guardian Safety Solutions Handicap (65) 1000m:
Back Me: 2 Puzzling Wonder (Bet Now: $2.70) looks the way to go here. He is a handy conveyance for Anthony Cummings that has had little to no luck this time in. He got no clear air when resuming at Canterbury before going to Randwick where he was caught wide no cover yet stuck on well. Draws better, not much depth, keen.
Big Danger: 3 Worldly Impact (Bet Now: $4.20) was given a 12/10 from Shinn two back at Canterbury but couldn’t hold out Sugar Bay Leonard before going to the same Randwick race Puzzling Wonder contested when running midfield behind Ice Bucket. Hard to trust but back to Provincial level will really suit.
Long Shot: 7 She’s A Bob Girl (Bet Now: $14.00) had been just par in her first two runs to kick off the prep before racing at Wyong where she got back in the run and worked home okay late in the piece. Third up, so she should be ready fitness wise and with speed engaged here, look for her to charge late.
Race Three (14:35) : ICU Security Cameras Handicap (65) 1600m:
Back Me: 6 Princess Vein (Bet Now: $8.00) is a mare who is absolutely low flying at the moment for the astute Jason Deamer yard. She has bolted up at her past three outings, starting off at Taree before going to Cessnock and then doing the deed at Scone. More depth here, but again looks to get a good time of it on speed and we know the saying of mares in form.
Big Danger: 11 She’s Magical (Bet Now: $4.20) put together a couple of solid efforts prior to running over this track/distance a tick over two weeks back where she was ridden a treat on the speed by Jason Collett and the filly did her bit, sprinting clear when asked and fending off her rivals. Draws well, down in the weight and gets Williams steering.
Long Shot: 2 Bon Equus (Bet Now: $10.00) bolted in over this track/distance three back before a couple of efforts in town where he didn’t set the world on fire, the second of those over the staying trip behind Elatus. Back to the mile looks ideal for this four year old, stable is going well and overall, this isn’t a strong races, plus Josh Parr is back steering.
Race Four (15:10) : Gosford RSL Belle Of The Turf Stakes 1600m:
Back Me: 5 Sofin (Bet Now: $9.00) is a quality mare trained by Shannon Fry at Coffs Harbour. She bolted up in the Port Macquarie Cup before being tipped out for a break. Resumed in the Coffs Harbour and her run was enormous in defeat, settling near last in the run and producing brilliant closing splits behind Bodega Negra. This is a steep rise in class but keep in mind she ran really well in town last prep behind the likes of Sense Of Occasion and Allergic.
Big Danger: 3 Imposing Lass (Bet Now: $4.40) ran over 1400m last Saturday at Warwick Farm where I thought she perhaps wasn’t ridden the best given she is a rolling type of mare, not one that can crawl/sprint, especially on a heavy track. Will love a firmer surface here and Collett is back on, and he rides the horse better than anyone.
Long Shot: 13 Bettabed Red…(Bet Now: $18.00) well if you backed her last Friday night at Canterbury, I am sorry for bringing up the nightmare. I was on Le Cavalier and happy he got the win, but gee Bettabet Red should have absolutely trotted in but she just had no luck in the straight and was unable to be extended. This mare was a few lengths off Sofin in the Port Cup Prelude, so turning the tables is a concern, but she is going really well.
Race Five (15:50) : Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup 2100m:
Back Me: Gotta stick fat with 3 Sense Of Occasion (Bet Now: $2.80). Can’t ignore him after what he produced in the Villiers (1600m) fresh when coming from last on the home turn and dashing hard between runners to nab them close to home. Ideally suited up in trip, has upside and I’m quite keen on him.
Big Danger: 2 Destinys Kiss (Bet Now: $9.00) is the hard fit runner over staying trips and is in super form at the moment. He comes through the Tatts Cup (2400m) where he sat off the pace in the run before Avdulla started going on him before the turn and the horse got to the leaders quickly and eventually wore them down. Won this race last year but looks to be going much better 12 months on.
Long Shot: 5 Foreign Prince (Bet Now: $8.00) was unwanted in betting when racing in the Summer Cup (2400m) on Boxing Day where he sat outside a slow tempo and fought on okay but was no match for impressive winner Red Excitement. He will be better suited if he can dominated on pace and if that eventuates, he will take some beating.
Race Six (16:25) : De Bortoli Wines Takeover Target Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: I think this race evolves around 1 Ball Of Muscle (Bet Now: $4.60). If he turn up and produces his best, he will simply be too classy for them. But it’s just a question of how well he is going. I thought he had his chance when he resumed off a let up in the Canterbury Classic (1200m) but he didn’t find much in the straight when sixth to Le Cordon Bleu. Gets Oliver aboard now, maps well and won this race a couple of years ago.
Big Danger: 5 Supreme Effort (Bet Now: $6.50) looks primed to run an absolute beauty here. He has been freshened up since racing midfield behind Kuro in the Starlight and by then it looked as if he had enough. But he has been freshened up and gee he looked the part in a recent trial at Wyong when winning under triple wraps. Massive chance.
Long Shot: 4 Wouldn’t It Be Nice (Bet Now: $15.00) isn’t the most reliable horse going around but there was plenty of merit in his effort when resuming at Canterbury in the Canterbury Classic (1200m) when coming from near last on the turn to run a game second to Le Cordon Bleu. As I said, hard to trust, but is capable on his day and Rachel Murray is one of the form riders in NSW.
Race Seven (17:05) : Tab.com.au Malcom Cusic Stakes (Class 4) 1200m:
Back Me: 11 Precautions (Bet Now: $4.20) is a well bred filly for John O’Shea and Godolphin who just looked a little to fresh when resuming at Randwick on Boxing Day given she was a touch keen on speed and that left her gassed when it mattered. Should come on from that outing and looks the clear horse to beat.
Big Danger: 6 Lady Jivago (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented mare that has just had no luck at all in recent times. Was never really clear of a pocket two back behind Sugar Ray Leonard before getting shuffled back in the run, then getting clear and working home strongly behind Suspense. Convinced she is going very well, but she just needs an ounce of luck to show that.
Long Shot: 3 Avonaco (Bet Now: $34.00) has simply been dreadful in two runs this time in, albeit in much stronger races than this. Failed to beat a runner home fresh behind Ziggy Willie before bettering that by one horse at Canterbury behind Deploy. Talented on his day, but the formlines don’t justify that. Take him on trust.
