South Australian metro racing this Saturday makes a rare trip to Gawler where eight races have been set down. The weather is overcast, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:31) Proper Clean Steeple 3340m
4 Sweet Lullaby (Bet Now: $2.20) for me. Patrick Payne trains this mare, who made her Steeple debut at Warrnambool last time out where she looked in a little bit of trouble, getting well back with a few time, but Richard Cully rode a confident and patient race on the mare, finishing best on the flat late. Think she’ll take good improvement from that and is a leading chance.
1 Searaven (Bet Now: $4.50) is a beauty for Barry Brook who comes here in winning form having won the Grand National at Morphettville three weeks ago. She was on speed throughout and while she looked a beaten horse on the turn, she kept finding and on the line was strongest. Likely leads this field up, so she’ll be out of trouble and trying hard as always.
3 Casiraghi (Bet Now: $9.50) returns to the Steeples after contesting a Hurdle here last Wednesday where he looked as if he’d run a tailed off last at one stage but he picked up and was really good late behind Tangara. Far from disgraced in the Grand National the start prior behind Searaven and the small should help his cause. Doubt he wins, but it wouldn’t be a total shock.
Race 2. (13:06) Gawler Cup October 25 Hurdle 3340m
Very interesting runner is 8 Jumbo Prince (Bet Now: $8.00), who is making his jumps debut for the Jarrod McLean stable. Has had a few runs on the flat for McLean and for the most part has been disappointing, but he has contested some decent flat races. Has had two jumps trials since last start to prepare for his hurdle debut and liked the way he went in the latest trial at Cranbourne. Hoping his flat speed comes to the fore.
5 Comics (Bet Now: $4.60) has done a good job in a couple of runs over the hurdles for the Durden camp, both over 3480m at Casterton. First run saw him run a narrow second to Jamieson before getting the job done impressively last time out under an in form Tom Sadler. Like the way he’s going about it and confident he can measure up against this lot. Hard to beat.
4 Tangara (Bet Now: $5.50) is usually thereabouts for Eric Musgrove and his consistency was rewarded with a win here last Wednesday. Admittedly, he took on scrubs, but was given a lovely ride by Richard Cully just off the speed and once he got the inside split, the race was all over. This looks his right level and stable have had a great season with their jumpers. Definite chance.
Race 3. (13:41) Goldin Farms Handicap (70) 1100m
1 Kemalpasa (Bet Now: $3.20) for me. The Jolly camp trains this three year old, who hasn’t raced since Feb 23 on the Parks track at Morphettville when back off the speed and chasing hard when second to the above average filly So We Are. Won his lone run at this track and liked the way he went in a Morphettville jumpout last Tuesday. Happy to be in his corner.
4 Wanaasa (Bet Now: $1.70) is a Ryan Balfour trained filly that had her first run for the stable on the Parks track two weeks ago where she was absolutely smashed in betting and under Jess Eaton, the filly spanked them, winning by six without being fully extended and did it with something in hand. Bit of depth to this field, so wouldn’t want to take anything silly short if you like her.
You’d love to have a stable full of horses that try as hard as 3 Exalted Maxine (Bet Now: $7.50). She did plenty of work last Saturday at Morphettville, sitting wide before pressing forward to lead and she gave a really good kick but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Toolbar. Like her back to 1100m and I think her best chance of winning will be if she leads and rolls.
Race 4. (14:21) Onka Valley Football Club Handicap 1100m
I’ll take a punt on 5 Autumn Splendour (Bet Now: $3.70), a filly on debut for Phillip Stokes. She trialled on the Parks track a month ago and gee I liked the way she moved in behind them, the trial won by a handy galloper in Wesport, but this filly was under a really good hold. Not sure how strong this race is and we’ve seen recently these young Stokes runners are firing.
2 Grinzinger Express (Bet Now: $2.30) has done a good job in two career outings for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Debuted with a tough on speed win at Wodonga before going to the Parks track two weeks back when on speed and trying hard but was no match for Hard Press, who does look above average. That was 1250m and that is probably a stretch for her, so like her back to 1100m.
6 Hateech (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Sidestep filly on debut for the Jolly team. This girl hasn’t been sighted in an official trial, but did have a jumpout last Tuesday at Morphettville and liked the way she went there in her respective heat, sitting near the speed and going about her business nicely. Bit of depth to this two year old contest, but keen to see how she goes at start one.
Race 5. (15:01) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (82) 2100m
Good placement by Patrick Payne with 4 Eckhart (Bet Now: $1.55), who was scratched from a race at Sandown on Wednesday in preference for this. He ran at Sandown last time out where he just took a fair while to get into his work but loved the way he found the line late behind Dabiyr. The depth here is clearly not as strong and down in the weights, he looks really hard to beat.
3 Aagas (Bet Now: $3.80) is a beauty for Ryan Balfour and I think he’s a definite leading chance here. He resumed over 1550m on the Parks track a fortnight ago where he had the suck run behind the speed, a very moderate speed, so was entitled to find the line well and that he did, running second to Polar Vortex. Likes Gawler, good second up record and up to 2100m is a further tick.
2 Up ‘N’ Rolling (Bet Now: $7.00) is starting to get up to an ideal trip. He’s had two runs for Grant Young, both coming in the previous two Saturdays. Last Saturday was over 1800m at Morphettville where he got back in a race dominated by those near the speed but he made ground and was solid in defeat late behind Street Sheik. Out to a suitable distance now and finds a winnable race.
Race 6. (15:41) MarX Real Estate Handicap (70) 1500m
9 Diamond Tycoon (Bet Now: $8.00) isn’t one of mine but gee she finds a winnable race here and now has some positive form next to her name. Ran over this track/distance last start and while running third to Double Pockets, beaten 1.5L, I think you could make a case that she goes close to winning had she not got hampered halfway down the straight. Now she’s found positive form, hoping she can go on with it.
4 Charossa (Bet Now: $3.00) has been costly this time in but at times, he’s had no luck and that’s been the case his past two. Two back had no luck in the straight when having something to offer behind Beautiful Flyer before racing on the Parks track when wide no cover for the trip and fighting on strongly behind King Kabuto. If the breaks go his way, he can win…but it’s nearing D-Day.
10 Double Pockets (Bet Now: $15.00) has been a ripper for Sue Nolan for a while but hadn’t won in some time, but that all changed last start at this track/distance, sitting on speed in a surprise role under Caitlin Jones but he reacted to the new racing style and kicked hard in the straight to get the win. That was his first run in six weeks so you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
Race 7. (16:21) Coopers XPA Handicap (86) 1200m
The market will be the main guide here because I think if 4 Amberdi (Bet Now: $3.80) is forward enough, she wins. Talented mare for Sue Jaensch that hasn’t raced since the Proud Miss during the Carnival when working home well late behind Lady Cosmology. She’s very good with fresh legs, 2/2 at the track and stable generally get it right when bringing them to town fresh.
5 Columbia (Bet Now: $3.50) is a talented son of Denman for the Will Clarken team that was hard in the market when resuming over 1000m at Morphettville Parks two weeks ago and under a lovely steer from Todd Pannell, he finished best and was too good for his rivals despite being over an unsuitable trip. Better suited at 1200m, which he gets here, and should take some beating.
11 Arrow Lane (Bet Now: $10.00) will welcome the little freshen up for John Hickmott. He contested a strong 86 over 1200m at Morphettville a few weeks ago where he was well specked and though held up for a stride or two, he had his chance when fourth to Vieira. I reckon if this was a 75 and at 1000m, he’d be a moral, but an 86 at 1200m is okay and will be one for multiples.
Race 8. (17:00) Adelaide Plains Bloodstock Handicap (64) 1100m
8 Bolt I Am (Bet Now: $11.00) is worth an each way ticket in the get out. I reckon this David Jolly runner has been pretty good in two runs back from a spell, each time not getting a great amount of luck. Back and slightly held up fresh when a closing third to Irish Mint, who was great last Saturday in defeat. Then raced wide no cover last Saturday and couldn’t come on behind Bold Star. Winkers come off and draws gate one.
9 Hello Gorgeous (Bet Now: $3.00) is going well for Gary Searle. Ran over 1300m on the Parks track a few weeks ago when given a nice ride by Holder and she was there to win, but Lady Bethany had the hard run under the belt and was too strong in the end, but this mare was far from disgraced in second. I think 1300m is a bridge too far, so back to 1100m, she appeals.
There’s been good specking for 13 Bajan (Bet Now: $11.00) and can’t argue with that move. He ran over 1200m at Morphettville a month ago and had no luck in the straight behind Beautiful Flyer, not getting much room to let down and pretty much went around like a barrier trial. Placed in both runs at the track and should get clear air this time around. Definite chance.
