A bumper ten race card has been assembled for Eagle Farm this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:06) Jim Beam Black Carnival Ball Handicap 1000m
There are a number of ways you could go here. I’m keen to see what 13 Couldn’t Refuse (Bet Now: $6.00) does here. Desleigh Forster trains this youngster, who is a close relation to the very good stablemate Too Good To Refuse. Comes back to racing as a gelding. Had two runs in the Spring and looked very new and raw. Think the snip job has done the trick because he was one of the standout performers in the Doomben trials back on March 26. Any glimpse of that here, and he’ll go close.
10 Ready To Humble (Bet Now: $7.50) is a son of Rubick on debut for the Matty Dunn stable. This bloke has had four career trials to date, but only one this prep, which came last week at Deagon where he led all the way and looked to do it really comfortably when winning narrowly. He’s in the right stable and with that 1000m grounding under the belt, should hold him in good stead.
5 Chico Molagro (Bet Now: $8.00) is an I Am Invincible colt for Tony Gollan having his first start. He’s an absolute hulk of an animal, which was evident to see in a recent Doomben trial when wide all the way but going about his business quite nicely when third to the well performed stablemate Epaumada. He’ll get better with time and racing, but off the replay in the trial, he’s a good looking type.
Race 2. (11:37) TAB Handicap 1000m
Keen on the Bjorn Baker trained 8 Brazen Gem (Bet Now: $10.00). This filly debuted on a bog at Muswellbrook where she got a fair way out of her ground and didn’t appear 100% on the surface but picked up and was excellent late when second. Firmer footing should help her cause big time, and the stable rarely miss when they make a hit and run mission to Brisbane.
1 Epaumada (Bet Now: $2.30) is a daughter of Epaulette for the Tony Gollan stable resuming. This girl created a decent impression in her two runs to start the career in the Summer, winning like it was a barrier trial on debut at Gatton before going to this track/distance where she was impressive again. Been given a nice little break and trialled up well for mine at Doomben.
7 Written With Ease (Bet Now: $10.00) is the one that might be silly odds at double figures. Stuart Kendrick trains this filly, who debuted late last year at the Sunny Coast when on speed and giving a really good kick but was grabbed late by Alligator Blood, a horse who was and is talked up as one of the best juveniles in Queensland, so that form reads well I would suspect and has the speed to overcome the draw.
Race 3. (12:13) Brisbane Racing Carnival Handicap (75) 2200m
Happy to butter up on the Kris Lees trained 3 High Opinion (Bet Now: $5.00). Specked him at longer odds when he ran here three weeks ago and he ran a beauty in defeat when third to Kubis, and that form has been ticked off with that horse running a game second in the Toowoomba Cup last week. High Opinion has upside and should prove really hard to beat here.
2 Wu Gok (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Chris Waller trained stayer who was given a sweet steer to win two back at the Gold Coast (Metro) before going to the Sunny Coast where he got a mile back but got to the outside and finished off strongly to run second to stablemate Cormac. Was coming back in trip that afternoon and I think remaining at 2200m will suit. In the right stable as well.
14 Seento (Bet Now: $18.00) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates for Toby Edmonds and is hard to catch but perhaps he could fill a place. Had him on top when he raced at Doomben two weeks ago where he just got too far back in the run and wanted to lay in, which certainly didn’t help his cause at all behind Sir Barnabus. Perhaps a bigger track will help his cause.
Race 4. (12:48) Artisan Carnival High Tea Plate (Class 3) 1200m
12 Intrinsic (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Kris Lees trained mare who has been kept on ice since resuming at February on Feb 16 when back and finishing off strongly to just miss out on picking up stablemate Raiden. Was later found to have pulled up lame in both fore legs, adding more merit to the run. No trials or anything since, but has the quality to win if she’s recovered and is right fitness wise.
14 Spin (Bet Now: $2.50) is a Team Snowden trained three year old who is three weeks between runs after racing at this track/distance where he got back in a slowly run affair and was never really likely but did make ground very late behind Cool Sequence. He wins this if he’s at his best, but hasn’t really shown that for a little while, but the run two back at Randwick was good.
5 Totally Charmed (Bet Now: $11.00) could bounce back hard here. Thought he was really good first up behind Crusher before going to Doomben a fortnight ago where he was quite disappointing behind Bold Endevour but perhaps he wasn’t 100% happy on the sticky track. Gets firmer footing this time around and third up, should be ready fitness wise and Fradd steers.
Race 5. (13:23) Robert John Lewis Plate (Class 3) 1200m
9 Majestic Pedrille (Bet Now: $21.00) looks the best on the program. Talented mare for the Mark Schmetzer stable that resumed with a strong second at Tamworth before racing over 1450m on a Muswellbrook bog where Bowman gave him every chance but she just didn’t quite finish it off on that track when fourth to a proven city horse in Valree. Back to 1200m on top of the ground, back to this level, really keen.
8 Our Mantra (Bet Now: $16.00) could be one at odds to include in wider multiples. Ran at the Doomben midweeks last time where the race and meeting was dominated by those on speed and he was back, never really in the hunt and was on a wet track, which he doesn’t really like. Back on firmer footing, hopefully can get three wide cover from the draw and his old form in Sydney is good enough to win.
A new TV at my joint could be on the cards if 13 River Racer (Bet Now: $3.50) wins this, given I’ll abuse the old TV in disgust. She’s been such a frustrating mare to follow, but sooner rather than later, she’ll win another race. Just got into a sticky spot last time at Doomben and was unlucky, but not sure she would have won. The key to her is a big track and clear air. Hopefully gets clear air this time around.
Race 6. (13:58) Caleb Plate 1400m
Think we’ll see a couple of Derby contenders here, one of them being 2 Trusty Lad (Bet Now: $11.00), who resumes after a very good Summer prep, which saw him race four times, the last run seeing him win impressively over 2200m here, showing good signs he’s going to be a key chance for the locals in the Derby. Trialled up well a couple of weeks back on his home track at Toowoomba…1400m is short of his best, but will be strong at the end.
10 Soxagon (Bet Now: $4.00) is a son of Rocker for Ben Currie who is two weeks between runs. Last raced over 1350m at Doomben when on speed and he booted clear on the turn, looking home and hosed, but was bloused on the line by a Stakes class horse in Millard Reaction. 1400m at Eagle Farm perhaps a little question mark with him, but will be on speed and prove hard to run down.
9 Starbuster (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Rob Heathcoate trained three year old who is over three weeks between runs since racing at the Doomben midweeks where he didn’t get much luck in the straight in a bit of a horror watch early on in the straight when second to Too Hot To Hold. Would love him at the mile but perhaps a genuinely run 1400m will help his cause. Big track a tick also.
Race 7. (14:37) Become A BRC Member Handicap (Class 6) 1600m
Gee I think 5 Gold Ambition (Bet Now: $10.00) is a good gamble here, provided we get an each way price. Had good market support at a price when resuming at Doomben two weeks ago on a wet track, something he doesn’t really like, but I thought he was an eye catcher late behind Prince Of Tie. 1600m, bigger track, firmer footing, good second up stats…think he can only run well.
2 Mazaz (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Chris Waller trained stayer who resumed over the Doomben mile a fortnight ago where he was nearer the inside all the way and didn’t really get the clearest of paths in the straight when a close up fourth to stablemate Le Juge. Reckon he wants 2000m+, so perhaps third up is when to back him, but does have a touch of quality about him compared to these.
7 High Degree (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Rochelle Smith trained mare who is coming back in trip and should run her usual honest race. She ran third in the Gold Coast Stakes behind Mishani Vaidra and her effort was full of merit, getting a fair way back in the run and closing off okay without really threatening. Was down to run in the Toowoomba Cup last week but didn’t get a run and instead runs here.
Race 8. (15:22) TAB Handicap 1000m
He’s hard to catch is 6 Guard Of Honour (Bet Now: $7.00) but I think the set up here suits him really well and can go close to winning. Should be forgiven for the first up run behind Straturbo here given those on speed did get a little mid race breather and those out the back really couldn’t get involved. Pace should be hot here, so he’ll get his chance to blouse them.
15 Whycatchim (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of Magnus for the Ben Currie stable that was just too classy for them when winning over the 1050m at Doomben a few Wednesdays back. Lloyd showed initiative from the outset, wanting the lead and getting it, and from there, it was a pretty painless watch if you were on. He’ll be strong at the end of a hard 1000m I would expect and is a definite threat.
8 Volkhoff (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Team Guy trained mare who is resuming. This former WA mare had a really good opening prep in Queensland for the stable, seeing her win a couple of times. Looked sharp in a Gold Coast trial win a couple of weeks back and can sprint well fresh. Track should be dry for her and that is when she is at her most effective. Knockout chance.
Race 9. (16:02) Sporting Chance Foundation Family Raceday Handicap 1400m
2 Cannyescent (Bet Now: $17.00) could be an improver at odds. He comes through the Goldmarket at the Gold Coast where he just got a mile out of his ground in a fast run race but made good ground late in an encouraging effort. Getting fitter now and was down to run in the Weetwood last week, which is 1200m, so like he’s at 1400m on the bigger track…keen on him running well.
7 Tonsor (Bet Now: $2.00) is a Matty Smith trained gelding who is building up a really good record and is hard to ignore after what he did to them at Doomben two weeks ago when spanking them by a space and with something in hand. My query on that run/win is that they walked in front, he was in the A1 spot and nothing from behind was good enough. Bit different set up but he has showed previously he can work for a win.
4 Morendi (Bet Now: $67.00) is more than likely on the Grafton Cup path so I’m sure whatever he does here, he will improve on, but he can run a bold race fresh. Hasn’t raced since the Brisbane Handicap during the Summer Carnival when down the track behind Coldstone. 1400m short of his best, but has class and I’m sure will be hitting the line late with longer targets in mind.
Race 10. (16:42) www.brc.com.au Handicap (0MW) 1400m
This race is all about 5 Surprise Bullet (Bet Now: $7.00) and what he does. If he gets into the gates without spending too much energy, he’s better than these and will be winning. He was scratched behind the gates a few weeks ago after being a nutter trying to get into the gates. Been given three trials since then and the trials have been outstanding, most notably the one last week at Deagon. If he gets in comfortably, he’ll win.
2 Constant Flight (Bet Now: $5.00) is a consistent type for the David Vandyke stable and has a pretty good overall record. Just think at the moment, I’m not sure how well he’s going. Comfortably held two back when second to Mishani Vaidra before racing at Doomben again when third to Trommelschlagen. Back to 1400m on a bigger track from a good draw, definitely a chance. Wouldn’t want anything short re odds.
8 Lucky Prospector (Bet Now: $12.00) has really turned his career out, largely thanks to Tash Burleigh. Did a great job under her care before being sent to Chris Meagher, where he ran at Doomben two weeks ago and did a good job off a slow tempo when third to Prince Of Tie. That was his first run in five weeks so there should be plenty of room for improvement and is a leading contender.
