Eight races will be run and won at Moonee Valley on Friday night, highlighted by the Group ll Alister Clark Stakes (2040m). The weather forecast is for showers, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (18:30) Ladbrokes Back Yourself 1000m
7 Maha (Bet Now:Β $4.40) did some good things for me at odds on debut at Bendigo and won’t be dropping off. Debuted over 1000m there, showed good natural speed to lead and though strongly challenged in the straight, she showed some good ticker to safely hold her rivals. Think she’s above average and can take this out, making it 2/2.
1 Favell (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is bursting to win a race for James Cummings. Didn’t have much room late on debut at Bendigo and should have finished closer. Then came back to 1000m at Sandown and he really charged to the line late in restricted room. He looks to have his fair share of ability and with better luck can take this out.
6 Zorro’s Ghost (Bet Now:Β $12.00) is a Toronado colt for the Hayes/Dabermig team that is on debut. This bloke has had two trials to prepare for his first day at the races. Loved his change up speed in the Wodonga trial win before being down the track at Werribee. Stable should always be respected with their youngsters, so watch the market.
Race 2. (19:00) 4 Pines Brewing Co (bm70) 1600m
2 Necessary (Bet Now:Β $3.20) has been up a little while for Enver Jusufovic but this mare continues to race really well. Ran over 1400m at Cranbourne last Friday where she had a good run in transit and loomed large to win, only to be bloused late nearer the inside by Oriental Lily. Like her up to 1600m and should prove a leading chance.
3 Vungers (Bet Now:Β $3.10) is bursting to win a race this prep. He’s going really well for Brendon Hearps but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Ran over this track/distance back on Feb 21 when given a lovely ride by Rawiller and looked home when hitting the front, but was nabbed late by Cape Richards. Gets a great chance to win.
The best version of 1 Muswellbrook (Bet Now:Β $7.50) would see him just about win. The Hayes/Dabernig team trains this four year old, who ran over the mile at Wagga last start where he got back and was never really a winning factor behind Ruby Skye but did close off okay. Gets in nicely after the claim and small field suits.
Race 3. (19:30) Powerflo Solutions (bm70) 1600m
Keen to see how 5 Contrition (Bet Now:Β $3.30) goes at this level. The Price/Kent stable trains this filly, who resumed over 1590m during the Wangaratta Carnival and while she didn’t beat much relative to what she faces here, she gave them a proper spanking and was very impressive in winning. Showed good promise in the Spring and think she can go on with it this time in.
7 Zayydani (Bet Now:Β $3.90) is a Savabeel filly for the Hayes/Dabernig team that resumes. This girl is on the Oaks path and kicks off here at 1600m off the back of two wins during the Spring to start her career and looked quite sharp each time she stepped out. Resuming at 1600m tells me enough work has been put in to run a positive race first up.
6 Part Time Lover (Bet Now:Β $6.00) hasn’t done much wrong this time in for the Ellerton/Zahra stable. This mare ran over this track/distance last time out where she closed off strongly from off the speed to run third, not beaten far and was good in defeat. Does no work from the inside gate and has hard fitness under the belt.
Race 4. (20:00) Abell Stakes 1200m
2 Faatinah (Bet Now:Β $4.00) to lead throughout. Forget he went around in the Oakleigh Plate. They just went to quick for him and he was run off his legs in a brutally run 1100m contest won by Pippie. I don’t think this will be a hard 1200m and with gate one, Olly should hold up, lead, control things and prove very hard to run down.
On a bending track and up to 1200m are two big ticks for the Danny O’Brien trained 5 Gift Of Power (Bet Now:Β $2.70). I’d just forget his first up run down the Flemington straight behind Fabergino. She went a tick over 32 for the final 600m and really, those behind had no chance. Much better suited on a bending track at six furlongs, plus the small field helps.
1 Cliff’s Edge (Bet Now:Β $6.50) has a fab record at the Valley and if he’s forward enough, he’ll make sure this is a proper 1200m contest. Resumes after a disappointing Spring prep, but I will say I thought he was poorly placed. This looks more his level, the Cranbourne trial was good and I think if he’s fit, he can put the pressure on in front and prove a tough nut to beat.
Race 5. (20:30) 55sec Challenge-bm70 955m
10 Gold Spark (Bet Now:Β $9.50) is a very interesting runner. Former Hayes/Dabernig runner that is now with Will Clarken that resumes. His form in Victoria was okay without jumping up and down before being sent to SA. Loved the way he went in a Feb 4 jumpout win at Strathalbyn and jumpouts at Strathalbyn are used by Clarken to get his runners hard fit.
11 Vivaro (Bet Now:Β $2.90) looks a speed demon for James Cummings that will prove hard to beat here. Led and copped pressure when a beaten fav first up over 900m at Newcastle. Then raced over 1000m here and showed really good sustained speed from the front to win. 955m looks ideal for her and Willow has plenty of options from the inside draw.
6 McGarrett (Bet Now:Β $20.00) has a good overall record in these 955m races and does look big odds. He ran in a Heat of this Series last time out and worked home strongly from the back in an on pace dominated affair. Speed should be red hot here, so backmarkers will get their chance, including this guy, to finish over the top.
Race 6. (21:00) Adapt Australia (bm64) 2040m
3 Influential Jack (Bet Now:Β $2.80) is a son of Epaulette for the Ellerton/Zahra stable who is dodging the Alister Clark in preference of the softer option, albeit is taking on the older horses. He comes through the Autumn Classic and was far from disgraced in defeat when fourth to Adelaide Ace. Gate one with Olly to steer, looks hard to beat.
4 Nirvana (Bet Now:Β $8.50) has been somewhat disappointing this time in with the two runs but does get Johnny Allen back to steer and has the Blinkers on first time. Ran over 2000m at Ballarat last time out and seemed to have his chance in a disappointing effort behind Grand Promenade. If he can get on speed without spending too many petrol tickets, he’ll be dangerous.
10 Dark Confidant (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is the interesting runner. Was scratched from a much easier race at Kembla in preference for this and always have to respect Matty Dale when he comes to Melbourne, especially the Valley. Ran over 1900m at Canterbury last start and was okay in defeat behind a progressive one in Opacity. Gets Dwayne Dunn to steer and finds a thin race.
Race 7. (21:30) Alister Clark Stakes 2040m
Hard to get away from 1 Adelaide Ace (Bet Now:Β $1.85). He was somewhat ridden upside down in the Autumn Classic at Caulfield but nothing else wanted to lead so Johnny Allen took up the running and really, after 400m it was race over. I reckon he’ll be a better horse with a bunny to chase and up in trip should be no issue. Happy to be in his corner again.
Up to 2040m should be okay for the Grahame Begg trained 2 Nonconformist (Bet Now:Β $3.90). Three weeks between runs since contesting the Autumn Classic over 1800m here when given every chance by Childs and loomed to beat Adelaide Ace, but the class of that horse was too much but he stayed on well to run second. Like him perhaps with a more conservative steer.
5 DiasonicΒ (Bet Now:Β $11.00) looks suited at the mile for Richard Laming. Ran over this trip last Wednesday at Flemington when back off the speed and chased strongly when third to impressive winner Paradee. Stable is starting to find some form after a very lean run and this bloke has showed good ability in the past. A win wouldn’t totally shock.
Race 8. (22:00) Cranbourne Fencing (bm70) 1200m
5 Mysticano (Bet Now:Β $11.00) does look hard to beat here I feel. His past three starts have come over 1200m, winning three back before running a game third a few weeks ago behind Street Life and Enough Swagger. Then went to the Valley over 1200m and was unlucky not to beat Leiter given he was held up for a few strides and was found to be lame post race. He’s been given a little freshen up since that last outing and looks hard to beat.
Interesting to see how 9 Ancestry (Bet Now:Β $3.50) goes for Phillip Stokes. Tactics backfired two back down the Flemington straight before going back to provincial grade at Pakenham and was back to his best with a spanking of his rivals after sitting on speed. Repeats that here, he just about wins, but he can be hit and miss.
8 Zaidin (Bet Now:Β $12.00) is a son of Lonhro for David Briedoake who had trialled up well prior to resuming at Moe where he was a late drifter in betting as favourite and ran accordingly, finishing midfield and was found to be lame post race, so there were excuses for him. Has been freshened up, Nolen remains on…his best is good enough.
