The Canterbury night racing season kicks off this Friday with an eight race card. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (18:15) Schweppes Mdn Hcp 1200m
Looks a lovely set up for 2 Selburose (Bet Now: $1.50) for the Waller camp. Was 1300m back to 1100m on the Kenso track last time out and tried hard, but bumped into a handy short course youngster in Lord Olympus. Now back up to 1200m, can see Nash landing the box seat and if the run comes, think she’ll be very hard to hold out.
Big watch here on 7 Supremo (Bet Now: $5.50), resuming for John Thompson. The stable tried to get him ready as a potential JJ Atkins horse, but he didn’t handle the bog on debut before failing in the Dalrello and was spelled soon after. Has trialled up well enough without jumping up and down. I think he’s got a bit of quality, so interesting to see what the market does.
6 Unrelenting (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Pride Of Dubai gelding for Gary Portelli that debuts. He’s had a couple of 800m trials this prep to get ready for start one, placing each time and showing okay ability. Would have thought a country/provincial maiden would have been an ideal kick off point, but the overall depth here after scratchings is weak, so he’s a chance to cause an upset.
Race 2. (18:45) Cyren Bar Grill Seafood Mdn 1550m
Not a race I want to get involved in from a betting perspective, but on top is 7 Ruddock (Bet Now: $1.75). Think Nash will be aggressive from the wide gate and looked to come across and find the front, which is what Glyn was trying to do at Kembla last time out. Tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off. Think if he finds the front/rail and gets a cheap furlong in front, he’s the one to beat.
6 Mr Gee (Bet Now: $4.00) is heading in the right direction for the John O’Shea stable. Ran last time out over 1500m at Newcastle and worked to the line pretty well I thought behind Savvy Legend, finishing third. Interesting where he gets to in the run from the tricky draw, but do think a maiden win isn’t far away for him.
A key threat here is 12 Kakariki (Bet Now: $7.00). Chris Waller daughter of Frankel that ran over 1500m in a Newcastle maiden where she didn’t get the clearest of paths in the straight and should have finished closer I felt behind Savvy Legend. The time was not good relative to the day, but I hope the inside gate is used, can sit closer in the run and think she’ll run a positive race.
Race 3. (19:15) Urbanista (bm72) 1900m
I think 2 Gone Bye (Bet Now: $3.30) is one of the best on the program. He’s a tough, tough customer for Mark Newnham that will put himself on speed and try hard, as was seen on Cup Day at Randwick when a fighting second to a progressive animal in Atlantic King. With the claim for Sherry, I hope he rides the horse aggressively from the front and runs them into the ground. Don’t wait for them.
Hard to knock the way 4 Unamerican (Bet Now: $4.80) is going about it this prep. He has won two on the bounce, the latest in the Cessnock Cup at Newcastle where it was pretty much a barrier trial for prizemoney and he was much too good. Likely sits outside Gone Bye and if it does become a staying contest, he’s in the mix as a threat.
10 Sophomore (Bet Now: $9.50) is a horse who will mind her own business just behind the speed, likely in the box seat. Sat on speed on the Kenso track last time out and stuck on okay in defeat behind Luvoir in a race where the form has been a touch suspect. Tick over trial was good and stable is starting to find form.
Race 4. (19:45) Jamberoo Action Park (bm72) 1200m
I think 10 El Magnificence (Bet Now: $12.00) can run a bold race from the front. Admittedly, his 1200m form is ordinary, but that was when he was trained in Victoria. His only run at 1200m for the Price camp came last start at Kembla and he fought on pretty well I thought behind a handy animal in Skyray. Last 100m will test, but he does drop 6.5kg from that run and has the right racing pattern for this track.
3 Wander (Bet Now: $6.50) doesn’t have the greatest racing pattern for Canterbury but if Sherry can hold a decent enough spot from gate one, he’s certainly got the ability to take this out. Far from disgraced at Randwick last time out behind Hilo in a strong 88. Back to a 72, and with the claim, he’s really well placed to run a big race. Just needs to hold up from the gate.
8 Paquirri (Bet Now: $6.50) isn’t the most reliable galloper going around when it comes to winning, but he should be thereabouts. That was the case last time out on the Kenso track behind impressive winner Belluci Babe, who has since failed, but he’s a tough customer who should land a good spot just off the speed. First four chance.
Race 5. (20:15) Ogalo Sprint (bm72) 1100m
The good thing of the entire day and night here is 12 Najmah (Bet Now: $2.15). For the most part, they were running heavy track times on the heavy track at Kembla on Cup Day, but the two 1000m races were run in fast time. This girl won one of those and she absolutely smashed the clock despite doing plenty wrong. Ran over four lengths quicker than Hellbender, who won the other race, and is a city winner, so that just reads so well for this. Maiden to a city 72 isn’t an easy task, but she looks Stakes quality.
3 Lord Olympus (Bet Now: $2.80) looks the only horse capable of causing an upset. He’s done a very good job in his first prep. Mark Newnham trains and he’s won four of five, with a narrow second as well. Been well placed and is again well placed given his record and is a last start city winner. Just bumps into a really good one I feel.
1 Lancaster Bomber (Bet Now: $11.00) is a talented son of Denman for Richard Litt that resumes. This girl has been kept on ice, having not raced since August 8 when solid enough in defeat on a bottomless track at Rosehill behind a Stakes class mare in Tailleur. Two trials leading in have been solid enough, gets the claim and barrier one. First four contender.
Race 6. (20:45) Featherdale Wildlife Park-bm72 1550m
12 Happy Candy (Bet Now: $4.50) is an honest mare who isn’t far away more often than not and with the scratchings, I think this race sets up perfect for her. Looks to get total control in front with Robbie Dolan to steer and her recent efforts suggest a win in town isn’t far off. Been up a while but is holding her form and condition pretty well.
5 Criminal Code (Bet Now: $5.50) is a big watch here. Former WA galloper that had his first run for Chris Waller at Bendigo and didn’t fire a shot in a disappointing effort behind Irish Playboy. Has since had a few weeks off, tinkering with the head gear, and his form from WA suggests he is above average, so keen to see how he goes.
Very interested in 7 Star Karen (Bet Now: $6.50). Didn’t mind her at a price last start on the Kenso track and she looked to be bolting in the run but when Nash asked for an effort, the wheels were spinning. Much better suited on firmer footing and from gate one, if she can hold leaders back, think she’s dangerous at a price.
Race 7. (21:15) Kia Fleet Edge (bm72) 1250m
8 Catapult (Bet Now: $3.70) is bursting to win another race. Beat all bar Great News two back at Newcastle before going to the Kenso track where he was a tad keen in the run but tried hard and again just missed out when third to Bob’s Your Uncle. Gets the claim for Tom Sherry and should get into a good spot from the barrier.
7 Zouologist (Bet Now: $4.80) is racing very well this time in, placing in a couple of country cups from as many starts. Latest run was in the Jungle Juice Cup where he ran second to General Soho, who is a proven city performer, so the form reads well and with the claim for Weir, can see this guy being popular in betting.
11 Poulton Le Sands (Bet Now: $26.00) is a stayer that is better suited over further, but he has got talent and class to run a positive race here at odds. Hasn’t raced since finishing down the track in the Stayers Cup at Rosehill back in June. Just one 1000m trial leading in, but if they do go silly in front, he’ll be charging late.
Race 8. (21:45) Metro (bm72) 1200m
Bit surprised 16 Screenager (Bet Now: $8.00) is at double figures. James Cummings trained mare who hasn’t done a great deal since this time last year, but I thought she was good without much luck at the Valley last time out behind Hint Of Mint. Gets the Blinkers on first time and from the gate, hopefully can sit just off the speed and be strong late.
There was a bit of quality about the win of 11 Stolen Jade (Bet Now: $3.70) first up at Gosford. Wide no cover for the trip but she ambled to the front and surged clear late for a dominant first up victory. She was a bit of a nonny once upon a time, but she’s really putting it together now and I think can measure up to these.
Big watch here on 1 Think Free (Bet Now: $13.00), a Kris Lees trained mare that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since January 4 on the Kenso track when pulling up not 100% behind a Stakes class mare in Jen Rules, so that form clearly reads well for this. Three trials to get ready have been quite good and she does find a winnable race to resume in.
