January Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the January Cup
Race 1. (12:35) Midway (Bm72) 1500m
2 Jumeirah Beach (Bet Now: $2.90) on top but not a race I want to get involved in. Team Freedman trained gelding that ran three weeks ago over 1800m at Eagle Farm where he seemingly had every chance but was far from disgraced behind a handy horse up there in Sneak Preview. Like him back in trip, he maps to do no work and be strong at the end.
4 Decadent Tale (Bet Now: $9.00) is in with a definite shout here for Jason Deamer. She resumed at Randwick a fortnight back in the Midway where she got into a decent spot just off the speed and tried her guts out but being first up over an unsuitable trip, she just looked in need of the run behind Miss Checkoni. Fitter, up in trip, she has good upside to come and can without surprising.
1 Contributingfactor (Bet Now: $21.00) is four weeks between runs for David Atkins since racing over 1400m at Randwick where he got back in an on pace dominated affair and was never really a factor behind Felix Majestic, who was incredible in defeat last weekend, so the form reads very well, and hard fit now, up in trip, his best is good enough.
Race 2. (13:10) Tab Highway Hcp (C3) 1100m
3 Divine Sinner (Bet Now: $9.00) is the way I am leaning. Cameron Crockett trained gelding that resumes, having not raced since Sep 16 at Randwick when luckless and had plenty to offer despite being down the track behind Derry Grove, who would be odds on here. Two trials under the belt, strong senior rider on, I reckon there is clear intent to run well here first up.
2 Outback Ringer (Bet Now: $7.00) is a son of Outreach that resumes for Cody Morgan. He ended last prep on a high with a dominant win over 1000m at Tamworth so he does seem a short course specialist. Moved well enough in a recent Tamworth trial and you do have to respect this stable when they come to town.
7 Life’s A Party (Bet Now: $4.80) is a key threat for Mark Jones. She was well specked at odds when racing two weeks back at Randwick in the Highway where she got too far back but loved the way she found the line late in the piece behind Gallant Star, finishing second. If she can settle closer and be within range, she has the finale to be dangerous.
Race 3. (13:45) Tab Highway Hcp (C3) 1100m
1 Penthouse (Bet Now: $1.65) is a sharp mare at around this level for Matty Dale that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since June 24 at Caulfield when near the speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite see it through behind Flying On A Limb. Given a good break and she looked extremely sharp in a trial win at Canberra to get ready. Jump, run, lead and win. Hopefully.
5 Acotango (Bet Now: $15.00) deserves a crack at Highway grade for Cody Morgan. He comes here off the back of a dominant win on the home deck at Tamworth where he got a sweet sit in behind before angling clear and he gapped them late. Good upside/improvement to come and overall, this isn’t an overly deep Highway.
10 Olimba (Bet Now: $41.00) has turned the corner since joining Jeremy Sylvester and commands respect. He has won his past two, winning the maiden two back at Narromine before going to Inverell where he gave them a start and a beating in a good effort. Harder here, but he’s earned a crack.
Race 4. (14:20) Inglis Classic Sale 11-13 Feb (Bm72) 1300m
2 Gallant Star (Bet Now: $3.90) is a very genuine animal for Brett Robb that should take beating against these. Big win from him two weeks ago in the Highway at Randwick, giving them a start and a beating, launching late to finish over the top for a big win. Yet to miss a place in seven career outings, he’s genuine, he has versatility re racing pattern and will be strong at the end.
9 King Of Dubai (Bet Now: $7.00) has done little wrong this time in for Jason Coyle. He was a strong first up winner at Canterbury before two subsequent runs at Randwick, the latest being two weeks ago when near the speed throughout and tried hard but couldn’t quite get there when second to a Magic Millions contender, Sydney Bowler. That form reads well for this. Hard to beat.
8 Dazzle Legend (Bet Now: $11.00) is a key threat. Chris Waller trained three year old that ran a fortnight back in the Sydney Bowler race where he seemingly had every chance and while he was held on the line by the unbeaten O’Shea three year old, he was good in defeat, finishing third. Only has to hold his form to be around the mark here.
Race 5. (14:55) Chandon (Bm78) 1200m
7 Mrs Chrissie (Bet Now: $4.00), if she runs up to the first up win, is a good thing. Maher/Eustace mare that resumed on Boxing Day over 1100m at Caulfield where she led throughout and she won without really being fully extended in such an electric return. Finds the front here and if 1200m is okay, I think good luck beating her.
6 Afterlight (Bet Now: $10.00) seems most effective when she can lead and roll on speed so if that can eventuate here, I think she’ll take running down. She ran over 1100m at Randwick two weeks ago where she was ridden with a sit and found the line well enough but was held on the line by Either Oar. Home track advantage and with a more positive ride, she’s hard to beat IMO.
2 Winning Verse (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Marc Conners trained mare that resumes. She is a very talented mare when at her best. Just a query of where she is at given she hasn’t raced since August when down the track here. That said, she has looked sharp in a couple of trial wins, and with her racing style, she’ll give herself every chance.
Race 6. (15:30) Farnan Yearlings Selling Now (Bm78) 1800m
8 Louisville (Bet Now: $2.45) is a nice horse for Chris Waller and should prove to be one of the leading contenders. He ran two weeks ago over the mile at Randwick and tried his guts out but couldn’t quite get there when second to impressive winner Miracle Spin. Hard fit, genuine tempo in front, he’ll get his chance to finish over the top.
3 Aristonous (Bet Now: $8.00) has to be given another look. He was too bad to be true last time out at Randwick where he looked a near good thing on paper. He got back and just didn’t come on at all, running tailed off last. Vet found nothing wrong, but the tick over trial was strong and we know his best is clearly good enough. Watch the market.
12 Angel Of Light (Bet Now: $5.50) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. Team Hawkes trained mare that ran three weeks ago over 1800m at Randwick where she was a bit one paced when initially asked for the effort but she kept on and was pretty good in defeat behind So United, finishing third. Like her with that run under the belt and she strikes a winnable race. Leading contender.
Race 7. (16:15) January Cup 2000m
12 Naval College (Bet Now: $3.20) is a nice horse on the up for Annabel and should take beating against these. He was second up when racing two weeks ago over 2000m at Randwick, getting the sweet sit in transit before angling clear and despite being out of petrol tickets late, he had enough in hand and was strong in winning. Good upside to come, he rates highly.
1 Luncies (Bet Now: $5.00) looks ready to win for Kris Lees. He was off a let up when racing in the Summer Cup on Boxing Day and he tried his guts out but he couldn’t quite get there when second to Lion’s Roar in a good effort. That was his first run since Nov 11 so with good room for improvement, he rates highly.
5 Baby Rider (Bet Now: $3.70) is a key chance. Surprised most with his on speed win two back in the ATC Cup before going to the Summer Cup where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a decent kick but couldn’t quite see it through, run down late behind Lion’s Roar. Good racing style, but I do think perhaps with a bunny to chase rather than leading, he’ll be more effective.
Race 8. (17:00) Ranvet (Bm100) 1300m
3 Zou Tiger (Bet Now: $3.20) should appreciate a rise in trip. John O’Shea trained gelding that resumed in the Canterbury Classic where he was a bit one paced when asked for the big effort and perhaps was needing the run when fifth to Insurrection. That was his first run since May so with good upside/improvement to come, he’s dangerous and has the class/quality to take this out.
8 Ka Bling (Bet Now: $2.50) commands respect for Team Snowden. He ran two weeks back in The Buffering at Doomben where he got a fair way out of his ground and while he was never a threat, he did make up solid headway late in the piece in a good effort behind Tamerlane. That was his first run in six weeks so with room for improvement, he rates highly.
I think there is a good roughie here but you will likely get better come race day. I speak of 2 Oscar Zulu (Bet Now: $18.00), who resumes for Chris Waller. Hasn’t raced since May and has been well beaten in two trials to get ready but the riders in each trial haven’t sneezed on him. He’s been there to clean out the cobwebs. He’s a gun fresh horse and is lethal on a dry deck. Was expecting him to run at the Gold Coast but he runs here and runs well IMO.
Race 9. (17:35) Toyota Forklifts (Bm78) 1200m
8 Boston Rocks (Bet Now: $2.80) is a talented three year old for Nathan Doyle that commands respect. Market kept him very safe in betting when resuming at Randwick four weeks ago and under a peach from Clark, he found when required, proving quite strong to the line in winning. Good upside/improvement to come, stable flying, he is a leading contender.
5 Pereille (Bet Now: $4.60) is a son of Fastnet Rock for James Cummings that resumes. This guy is first up, having not raced since Sep 23 here when back in the run and did make up headway but was never threatening behind impressive winner Vienna Princess. He is a horse who can sprint well on the fresh side and with two trials under the belt, the grounding is there to say he runs well.
6 Sir Ravanelli (Bet Now: $21.00) is flying for Terry Evans and has to be respected. This guy has been up a while but is holding his form really well, his latest run coming at Randwick three weeks back when on speed and fighting on strongly in defeat behind Robusto, who was solid in a fast run race last weekend. Not sure he’s a winning threat, but is a must for exotics.
Race 10. (18:10) Tab (Bm78) 1400m
2 Testator Silens (Bet Now: $2.30) for me in the get out. Joe Pride has this guy going really well without winning, the latest run being two weeks ago at Randwick when a closing second to Luvoir, just missing out on the win in a blanket go. Fourth up now so he should be hard fit, he maps perfect and he finds a race where the depth is on the thin side.
10 Sonora (Bet Now: $7.00) is the interesting runner. Maher/Eustace trained mare that hasn’t set the world on fire in two runs back from a spell, the latest seeing her tailed off last behind Miss Hellfire, but a tick over trial was strong and her best is clearly good enough to figure in the finish so watch the market.
4 Elusive Jewel (Bet Now: $21.00) should appreciate a rise to 1400m for John Thompson. This mare resumed at Randwick two weeks back over 1200m where she paraded like she would need the run and that’s how it panned out, finishing down the track behind Contemporary. Might want one more and 1600m, but she is a proven Saturday metro performer and will be strong late.
