Eight races will be run and won at Grafton this Wednesday where it is Ramornie Day, a time honoured country sprint race. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:20) The Abbey Motor Inn Maiden Plate 1000m
12 Woodditton (Bet Now: $3.50) gets the nod for me. Stephen Lee trained filly who resumed here on May 19 where she was hard in the market and though she didn’t win, her effort was sound. Just lacked a turn of foot and perhaps run off her legs. Been given the let up, draws a plum gate and gets Lloyd steering.
7 Blackberry (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Toowoomba raider who looks a key contender here. She debuted over 900m at the Gold Coast in a race that looked to have a bit of depth to it and I thought she was good late when a close up fourth to Vol Vallee. Looks to have a future along with upside and the bigger track/extra trip will be ideal.
3 Latino Love (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Street Cry gelding on debut here for Casino trainer Ethan Ensby. This three year old has had four official trials, all of which were with David Vandyke. No trials wit Ensby, so he’s a bit of an unknown, but the trials he has been in, he’s looked okay and certainly good enough to figure here.
Race 2. (12:55) Group l Feeds Rural Plate (Class 6) 2200m
10 Suggestapartner (Bet Now: $15.00) looks a great each way play for mine here. Les Tilley trained gelding who doesn’t mind a dry spell when it comes to wins but he is usually around the mark and he finds a very winnable race here. He ran over 2300m at Newcastle last start and closed off well late when third to Go Benny. Run prior at Hawkesbury reads well and his overall form does look a touch stronger.
2 Avroson (Bet Now: $2.90) was crunched in betting last Friday at Gunnedah over the mile and the punters got it spot on as the stayer relished the fresh return at the mile and he bolted in under Josh Adams. Quickly up to 2200m in the space of a week is never easy, but on the win, he just can’t be ignored here.
9 Outstrip (Bet Now: $15.00) is an absolute pest but gee this is the sort of race he could bob up in. He hasn’t raced since Ipswich Cup Day over 2150m in the Country Final where he couldn’t pick his feet up on the shifty track behind War Baby, who has franked the form since. This horse is best on firm ground and saved for the last crack. If that eventuates, he is a knockout player.
Race 3. (13:35) Grafton Radio Taxis 66423622 Handicap (Class 2) 1600
1 Hurricanes (Bet Now: $3.60) is one of the better each way plays for me throughout the Carnival here. Adam Wadick trained galloper who has been excellent in two runs from a break. Resumed on a heavy track at Canterbury and closed off well behind Mana before going to Warwick Farm where he was a real eye catcher late behind Cosmic Engine. Up to the mile looks perfect and he is a proven weight carrier.
2 Great Job (Bet Now: $3.60) is a progressive and in form three year old for the Tracey Bartley camp. This gelding last raced on June 26 at Coonamble when ridden a treat by Matthew Cahill over 1300m and finishing best. That does leave me with reservations about the rise in depth and up to the mile, but stable wouldn’t travel unless they thought he could perform.
8 Dorloter (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Choisir mare for Joanne Hardy who looks one for multiples at odds. She ran over this track/distance on Sunday and just looked a bit bogged down by the weight behind Madam Kate. She gets really good weight relief here, draws a lovely barrier and Larry Cassidy rides.
Race 4. (14:10) Tursa Inglis Bonus Grafton Guineas (70) 1600m
2 Sneaky Glance (Bet Now: $2.20) does get the nod for me here. Toby Edmonds trained three year old for Segenhoe who looks ready for this off the back of a very sharp win over the 1660m at Doomben last Wednesday where Lloyd had him off the pace and though he took a few strides to wind up, gee he was very good late. He’ll eat this up here and I think the bigger track will be perfect.
1 Constantine (Bet Now: $5.00) will love the drop in grade here. Talented gelding for Chris Munce who won two for two to kick off the prep before going to the Sunshine Coast Guineas where he found the class a bit rich behind Crack Me Up. Massive drop down here, maps well and only has to lump the weight to be a threat.
8 Mobile (Bet Now: $23.00) is a progressive youngster for Barry Lockwood who rises in grade but I think he can measure up here. He bolted up to break the maiden two back over 1400m at the Sunny Coast before going to the Gold Coast where he closed off with purpose behind Jexerlent. Up to the mile looks perfect and he has upside/scope.
Race 5. (14:45) Winning Edge Presentations Handicap (55) 1100m
2 Don’t Play Around (Bet Now: $4.80) for me here in a really open race full of chances. This filly ran over 1050m during the Rocky Carnival and just copped a bit too much heat on speed when down the track behind Lucky Clover. Should get every chance here from the good draw and gets Jim Byrne steering.
3 Fraternater (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Jet Spur filly that resumes for Neil Osborne. She sprouted wings late to get the debut win at Orange before going to Canberra where she sat on speed late and tired late behind Queenian. Recent trial on the Acton track looked very good and she always showed signs she would improve with a spell, and the trial supports that theory.
7 Smithtown (Bet Now: $13.00) is an Oratorio mare who can be hard to trust but this race doesn’t really carry much depth and she hasn’t been far away of late. She ran over 900m at Kempsey last time out and was run off her legs early but finished off with purpose late. Up to 1100m suits and getting back on top of the ground will aid her claims, plus one of her career wins came at this track.
Race 6. (15:25) Grafton Gas & Plumbing Handicap (55) 1100m
8 Mr Chow (Bet Now: $4.20) gets the nod for me here. Commands gelding for Lindsay Hatch who was formerly with Bjorn Baker. Made his debut for the new stable on his home track at Toowoomba and absolutely romped in, winning by a space and running time. This stable is batting at nearly 25% strike rate in recent times, and this horse just has enormous upside.
11 Me Mongo (Bet Now: $20.00) is the very interesting runner. Gelding that resumes for the Sylvester yard and I find it interesting that he resumes all the way here with no trials. Not the greatest of fresh records and better suited over further, but stable did have Lasszou nominated also but elect to go with this bloke. Definite market watch.
14 Radiologist (Bet Now: $9.50) is the big watch here. Former Gordon Yorke runner who is having his first run for the Cherryl Lantry camp. His best form is over slightly further, but he has spanked his rivals in a couple of Coffs Harbour trial wins and has run very sharp time each trial. I’ll respect him here big time.
Race 7. (16:05) Grafton District Services Club Ramornie Handicap 1200m
Just looks the perfect raced for the classy mare 3 Flippant (Bet Now: $5.00). Team Snowden trained mare who trialled superbly prior to resuming in the Healy and nothing really went right for the mare in behind the speed when fifth to Burning Passion. Should get the run of the race here from the good draw and is the clear horse to beat.
2 Boss Lane (Bet Now: $8.50) is a grand campaigner for the Ron Quinton who surprised most with his spank job on his home track at Randwick last time out because he isn’t really known for handling a wet track but he lapped it up and dashed clear. Dry track/1200m is his go, and that is what he’ll get here.
6 Steel Zip (Bet Now: $21.00) is a greybeard for the Patt Duff yard who is rising 10 but is racing with some real zest still. He resumed in the Healy and I really liked the way he finished his race off near the rail when midfield to Burning Passion. He did look that day as if he would improve big time off that and he did specifically dodge the Brisbane Winter for this race.
Race 8. (16:40) The Village Green Hotel Handicap (65) 1400m
2 Coolotta (Bet Now: $6.00) looks a key threat here. Paul Murray trained galloper who was a dominant first up winner at Wagga before going to Kembla grange where he sat near a fast tempo and faded late behind Mydream. Looks to map superbly here and RT takes over from a lovely gate.
5 Kincaple Chief (Bet Now: $7.00) really interests me here. Two back he was a real eye catcher late, weaving his way through and hitting the line with purpose before being dreadful next start. That was May 27, so the freshen up and firmer footing should do him the world of good and his recent Doomben trial was good.
10 Purrvosa (Bet Now: $31.00) has had a couple of runs back for the Brett Bellamy yard who looks a knockout chance here at odds. Two runs back have been just okay, but certainly not bad. His last win did come at this track/distance a tick under 12 months back and it was third up in the prep. Can a repeat effort happen?
