The Brisbane Racing Carnival properly kicks off this Saturday at Doomben with Group l action, the feature being the Doomben 10,000 (1350m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:25) Swire Shipping Plate (Class 6) 1110m
The speed map points the way of 12 Tango Rain (Bet Now: $1.90). Heavily backed when resuming in the Gold Rush at Hawkesbury and after getting a somewhat soft lead, he didn’t find much in the straight behind Glenall. Senior jock back on, leads for fun, handles give in the track…looks his race for mine.
13 In Times Of War (Bet Now: $4.90) is a consistent mare for Chris Waller. She runs well, jut doesn’t win. Thought she had her chance last time out at Hawkesbury but just battled away behind Siren’s Fury, beaten under a length. Finds a very winnable race here. Just all depends how genuine she truly is.
2 Havasay (Bet Now: $5.50) will love the drop in depth. He found the victory Stakes a bit rich first up and didn’t handle the class at all behind Impending. This looks more his go and he does have a very good second up record. Gate is a shocker, but he certainly has the quality to overcome that and figure in the finish. Not a long shot, but they are the only three you could entertain.
Race 2. (12:00) Ambassador Travel Handicap (80) 1350m
4 Oink (Bet Now: $4.20) looks the one, but he’s becoming a bit costly to follow. Looked all over a winner last Saturday over 1400 at the Gold Coast, loomed to win, hit the front, but Divine Unicorn kicked back hard nearer the inside and proved too good. Back to his fav track, draws well, drops in depth…looks his race.
11 Manaya (Bet Now: $9.50) is a quality mare that is second up for Michael Costa. Confidently backed when resuming here a fortnight back but didn’t have much luck in the run I thought behind Miss Iano. She has an outstanding second up record and fresh 1350m was always an ask. Has the run under the belt now.
Great to see 2 Order Again (Bet Now: $7.00) back at the races. He was one of the real shining lights of the Brisbane Winter Carnival last year but has had nearly 12 months off due to issues. Back now and I’m sure whatever he does here he will improve on, but I’ve been told a piece of work he produced last week was very good.
Race 3. (12:35) Members Handicap 1600m
4 Spectroscope (Bet Now: $6.50) is a James Cummings trained galloper who I thought was a good thing when racing over 2000m at Caulfield a few weeks back but I think he was the victim of an ill judged ride from Ethan Brown. He got itchy fingers and took off way too early, pouring on the pressure a fair way from home and was left a sitting shot. Back to the mile and back racing clockwise should see him take some beating.
10 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $4.80) is on the seven day back up for the Scott Morrisey team after contesting the Gold Coast Cup last Saturday where he kept surging and for a few strides looked the winner but Dreams Aplenty found when challenged and clung on. This horse thrives on the quick back up and an extra furlong is ideal.
7 Coldstone (Bet Now: $8.50) looks well placed here by the Mick Kent team. This bloke hasn’t raced for four weeks since contesting the Golden Mile at Bendigo where I thought he was far from disgraced behind Dodging Bullets in a race which had far more depth and class than what he faces here. Think he can only run well.
Race 4. (13:10) Chairman's Handicap 2000m
This is D-Day for 2 Interlocuter (Bet Now: $4.40) this prep. Three runs back this prep have been good without smashing it out of the ball park, the latest in the JRA Plate behind Tally where he stuck on well without threatening. This looks a considerable drop in depth and given what we saw in the Summer, if he brought that here, he’d be winning.
1 Megablast (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Nigel Tilley trained gelding who brings over some very good form from NZ, including recent Group l form. Resumed on a bog at Pukekohe and absolutely bolted in. But that is his thing. Get a heavy track and he is very, very hard to beat at this level. Doubt we get that, but he has enough quality.
7 Tumultuous (Bet Now: $20.00) is the Magic Millions Trophy winner who was unwanted in betting when resuming in the Tails Stakes three weeks ago here over the mile. He had a relatively decent run near the speed, but first up at that trip on the heavy track, he was always going to struggle and that is how it panned out behind With A Promise. Good second up record and much better suited on firmer footing.
Race 5. (13:50) Champagne Classic 1200m
If she doesn’t get too far back, I’m quite keen on 11 Sizzling Ace (Bet Now: $8.00). Resumed three weeks back over the 1050m here where she got a mile back off them in the run but chased hard all the way to just miss out on picking up Pennino. Confident she’s the one to follow from that race and she’s crying out for 1200m.
4 Dynamited (Bet Now: $4.20) is a talented son of Exceed And Excel that resumes for the James Cummings team. This colt has been given a really good break. Hasn’t raced since making a winning debut at Rosehill in November when beating home the subsequently Stakes performed Secret Lady. Comes here with just one soft trial under the belt, but the quality is there.
3 Only Wanna Sing (Bet Now: $16.00) is a really good youngster for the Rob Heathcoate yard. He was several weeks between runs when contesting the Dalrello a fortnight ago at this track/distance where he was just off the speed and tried hard but condition just gave way late behind Mishani Hustler. Should come on from that and is a definite chance.
Race 6. (14:30) Queensland Day Stakes 1350m
Hopefully we get a price about 14 Femme Fireball (Bet Now: $9.50) because I think she is primed to run well. Thought her run a fortnight back in the 3YO race here was outstanding. Three/four wide throughout yet kept surging to be beaten under a length by the well performed Marsupial. Would declare her if were on a bigger track, but still think she can win.
1 Snitz (Bet Now: $5.50) comes through the race won by Marsupial at Doomben and I thought his effort was very good. He did plenty of work in the run and probably had every right to drop out but kept finding to be only beaten 0.7L. That’s been two hard runs on the bounce now so how will he go here? Market will be the guide.
7 Bostonian (Bet Now: $10.00) is the big watch here. Tony Pike trains this three year old, who produced some high quality performances during the Winter/Spring in New Zealand. Hasn’t raced since the 2000 Guineas at Riccarton but a recent trial back home looked very good. If he’s come over well and brings his best, I think he’s a live chance.
Race 7. (15:10) The Roses 2000m
14 Youngstar (Bet Now: $3.50) looks one of the hardest to beat now after the barrier draw. Kris Lees trains this filly, who was outstanding when winning a fortnight back over the 1850m at Newcastle, dashing hard from the back and spanking the older horses in record time. Should get a lovely run from the barrier and 2000m no issue for mine.
I think 5 Another Dollar (Bet Now: $6.50) can turn the tables on Torvill here. They clashed a fortnight back in the Bracelet here over the mile and the run of Another Dollar was huge. Wide no cover throughout, kept pressing forward, took the front and though headed by Torvill, she didn’t turn it up and was very brave. Off that run, she should have no trouble with 2000m.
9 La Scopa (Bet Now: $18.00) comes through the Bracelet behind Torvill and I think her run should be forgiven. Did too much work in the run and was a beaten horse on the turn. The run prior behind Improvise was a beauty and off that effort, she should have no trouble with 2000m. Just needs luck from the draw.
Race 8. (15:50) Doomben 10,000 1200m
1 Redzel (Bet Now: $2.65 FAT ODDS) is the class runner and the proven big time performer so have to go his way. He lost no admirers for mine in the TJ when beaten by Trapeze Artist. That horse was just electric that afternoon and proved far too good. Trial behind English was solid enough, he won this race last year and is obviously a much better horse 12 months on.
12 In Her Time (Bet Now: $4.50 FAT ODDS) does look the obvious. Probably sits behind Redzel as the best sprinter Australia has as it stands right now. The TJ run was just a complete forgive. Got too far back via a tardy get away and an ordinary steer from Lane. Been freshened up for this Carnival and her trial/work since has looked very sharp. She’s ready to rock and roll.
4 Care To Think (Bet Now: $17.00 FAT ODDS) is the big watch. WFA certainly isn’t his go, but he’s got brilliance that could easily measure up to the top pair. He showed that right throughout the Summer Carnival before going to the Liverpool Cup at Randwick where nothing went right. Been given a good break and his trials/work leading in has been outstanding. He looks as forward as a horse can get for a first up assignment.
Race 9. (16:30) Rough Habit Plate 2000m
Keen to see what 13 Omineca (Bet Now: $10.00) does here. Lightly raced three year old for Chris Waller who broke the maiden impressively two back at Warwick Farm before going to the Gunsynd two weeks ago where he got a mile back in the run but you had to like the way he finished off his race behind Villermont. 2000m+ looks perfect, has timing and is in the right yard.
8 Dark Dream (Bet Now: $3.35) is a very promising gelding for the Kerry Parker team who went within a lip of beating California Turbo two back in the South Pacific at Randwick before racing in the Gunsynd where it was a similar result, this time with Villermont getting the verdict. He’s attacking the line as if 2000m will be no issue. Just want to see him do it.
5 California Turbo (Bet Now: $12.00) wouldn’t have lost many admirers in the Gunsynd. Fradd gave the horse a sore back in the run, sitting wide throughout and checking off heels most of the way. Looks as if he will eat up the mile and interesting to note the blinkers are off first time, hopefully getting him to relax.
