Racing returns to Flemington this Saturday with a nine race card, the first meeting at the track since Melbourne Cup Week. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:55) #lovethehorse Hcp 1100m
On top is 10 Sunday Yum Cha (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS), on debut for the Maher/Eustace camp. Now in the form guide it will say just one soft trial, but she has had a jumpout as well prior to the Rosehill trial behind the well performed stablemate Fake Love. That came a couple of weeks prior at Sandown where she was on speed and looked to go about her business very nicely. Looks smart and think she can make a winning debut.
1 The Art Of Flying (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) has the race experience under the belt and that should hold him in really good stead against these, the majority of which are on debut. He comes through the Merson Cooper at Sandown won by Anamoe, and that race rated really well. It can be followed with confidence and he was good late. Hard to beat.
5 Mr Scorefield (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS) looks a nice type. Nigel Blackiston trained gelding that debuted at the Valley where he was specked at big odds and ran well I thought, closing off nicely to run fourth to impressive winner Paulele. The extra 100m and run under the belt looks a good set up for him to run a positive race here.
Race 2. (13:30) Lexus Legends (bm70) 1400m
8 Montepulciano (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) looks to have his share of talent for the Jolly camp and would be really hard to beat in a maiden. Comes through the Winning Weather race from three weeks ago on the Parks tracl and had his chance, but far from disgraced in defeat in running third. He’s going well and hopefully the tempo is more genuine this time around, plus the stable are lethal when coming to Melbourne, with their ROI on all the tracks they’ve raced at in Victoria in the positive, significant positive too.
1 Free To Move (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) should be suited up to 1400m for Team Keys. This gelding had a freshen up prior to racing two weeks ago at the Valley in the Mackenzie where the front two dominated proceedings and gave nothing else a look in. Free To Move battled away well to run third but was never a winning threat. Fitter, up to 1400m, he can bounce back.
4 Rock The Ring (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is racing honestly this time in for the Hayes/Dabernig team and can run a decent race here at odds. Comes through the Eureka Stockade at Ballarat where Williams was positive from the outset, finding the front and rolling at a good clip. Tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off. Better suited here I feel and a win wouldn’t entirely shock.
Race 3. (14:05) Living Legends (bm70) 1720m
3 Chief Altony (Bet Now: $3.40 TOP ODDS) is the one with hard race fitness and does come here in winning form. Loved the way he knuckled down to win at Sandown last time, chasing down an in form Hasseltoff and drawing clear late to win impressively. He’s bred to eat up a staying trip, so like him up to 1720m here and he could well go on with it.
Clearly the Team McEvoy trained 4 Coolth (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) is a nice horse heading places. Resumed over the mile at the Valley and the way the race looked on paper, it was going to be sticky no matter what scenario. He didn’t win, but was still good in defeat behind Astraeus, who went so well at Pakenham last week. Fitter, up to 1700m, bigger track…does he want 2000m though?
8 Hasseltoff (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) looks to be going well. Griffiths/De Kock trained gelding that was strong to the line when winning two back over 1400m at Pakenham before going to the mile last time out at Sandown when wide and doing work. Fought on very gamely when second to Chief Altony. Has gate one to use, run of the race…just a query of whether or not last start has busted him.
Race 4. (14:40) Brew Stayers Trophy (bm78) 2530m
6 Reflect The Stars (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) for me. Danny O’Brien trained mare that comes through the 2600m race on Ballarat Cup Day. Thought Johnny Allen just waited a bit too long to press the button and that cost the mare the race I thought when beaten narrowly by Blandford Lad. On the big track, hard fit and with a more pro active ride, think she can win.
5 Tralee Rose (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS) is flying for Symon Wilde. 3/3 this time in, including a win on Oaks Day two back before proving that was no fluke with a tough win, ridden upside down too, at Sandown last time out. She’s heading in the right direction for an in form camp and looks one of the hardest to beat against this lot.
4 Miyake (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) is a very interesting runner here. Chris Waller trained four year old that had been racing well without much luck but he found the right race at Warwick Farm last time and duly saluted under a confident steer from J Mac. This race looks to have much more depth, but always respect the Waller stable when they switch states.
Race 5. (15:20) Living Legends Hcp 1000m
9 Human Nature (Bet Now: $11.00) is getting towards last chance territory himself. Was good in defeat two back in the Doveton at Sandown before going to the Valley where he was quite disappointing behind Grandview Avenue, a different race to the one Meteorite contested. Tinkering with the head gear and a truly run 1000m I do like.
2 Fabergino (Bet Now: $3.20) is the x factor here. Tiarnna Robertson trains this mare, who hasn’t raced since finishing down the track in the Darley Classic behind Bivouac in what was a high rating sprint race. This looks more her level and she does have the sustained speed to prove very hard to beat in a race like this. Market watch for sure.
1 Prezado (Bet Now: $4.80) is a straight track specialist and I think he can continue that here. Resumed in the Carlyon two weeks ago where he was tucked behind the speed. Got out in time to threaten, but just didn’t have the change up speed to go with a very much in form Grandview Avenue. Saves his best for the Flemington straight and is a second up winner, though he does get better as the prep goes deeper.
Race 6. (16:00) Prince Of Penzance (bm70) 1200m
Very hard race to sort out with confidence. 14 Tan Tat Harmony (Bet Now: $5.50) rises back up to 1200m and the Phillip Stokes stable is just flying at the moment. Was 1200m back to 1100m when racing on Ballarat Cup Day three weeks ago and kept finding the line nicely when a close up third to Riding The Wave. Gets back up to 1200m and draws the right part of the track.
1 Alburq (Bet Now: $5.00) is the class runner of the field and looks ready to go. First up for Michael Moroney, having not raced since July 11 at Caulfield over 1400m when down the track and a tired horse behind the above average Mystery Shot. Went quick time in a recent jumpout win here and has a good record at the track.
Giving respect to 2 Comte (Bet Now: $9.00) for Team Yargi. Was four wide no cover last start at the Valley and fought on really bravely in defeat I thought when a close up fifth to Bandersnatch. Draws the outside, which is usually the place to be down the straight. Just hope last start hasn’t busted him, so watch the market.
Race 7. (16:40) Efficient Trophy (bm84) 1400m
This looks a very tough race where you could have a throw at the stumps and that’s what I am doing in the shape of 8 Mr Money Bags (Bet Now: $16.00), who is having his first run for Lindsey Smith, and we know the record the stable has with these tried horses. Five weeks between runs, but looked very sharp in a Hamilton jumpout last week and the Blinkers are slapped on for race day. Worth a 1×3 play.
1 Bandersnatch (Bet Now: $2.90) is a handy galloper when right. Had his first run for Team Hawkes two weeks ago at the Valley where he was backed with confidence late and under a lovely ride from an in form Will Price, he was able to score. The overall time relative to the meeting and class was poor, so that’s a concern, but do feel that 1400m on a bigger track will suit him better.
2 Dawson Diva (Bet Now: $27.00) is a fascinating runner here. Formerly in Queensland, she is now with Peter Moody. Go back to the Winter of 2019, she ran second in the Queensland Oaks, so she has got quality when right, and her two Pakenham jumpouts have been more than encouraging. Think she can run a positive race at odds.
Race 8. (17:20) Rogan Josh (bm84) 1800m
For the first time this prep, 8 Sikorsky (Bet Now: $13.00) is placed in a race he can actually win. Has contested far stronger races than this throughout the campaign, the latest being the Kilmore Cup, and we saw what Tavidance did from that race last Saturday. Likes Flemington, draws soft…think he’s good value here.
17 Kaplumpich (Bet Now: $8.50) is racing so honestly at the moment for Kevin Corstens and is bursting to win one. Got control in front last start at Ballarat and did try hard. Just couldn’t dash well enough when asked and had to settle for another placing, this time a second to Skiddaw. Up in trip I don’t mind. Just hope it’s a positive ride and he turns it into a proper 1800m test.
3 Lamborghini… (Bet Now: $9.50) he was $61 last time out at the Valley and to be honest, he should have bolted in. That’s a worry about that race as a form reference potentially, but this guy does have a solid 2000m+ record and looks to be on track for potentially another trip to Tassie for the Hobart and Launceston Cups. Keen to see how he goes.
Race 9. (18:00) Legends Trophy (bm78) 1100m
10 Lady Brook (Bet Now: $9.00) has her share of talent for Phil Sweeney. Comes through a 1000m 78 F&M race at the Valley won by All Banter in what rated highly for the meeting, producing the best L400m and L200m of the meeting. She was back and wide, but still closed off well for third. She’s talented and can measure up to these.
4 Kalkarni Royale (Bet Now: $7.00) is bursting to win another race for Kevin Corstens. Led and was far from disgraced in the Black Pearl behind Wild Vixen before being freshened up and coming back to 1000m at the Valley where she chased strongly but was clearly no match for All Banter. That race produced the best last 400m and 200m of the meeting, so think that can can followed here and she’s got upside to come.
Wary of 16 Standoff (Bet Now: $8.00). She is three weeks between runs since contesting the 3&4YO Magic Millions race at Ballarat when back against the track pattern, but she closed off alright late in the piece when a close up fifth to Sisstar. Think this is a very winnable race for her, she draws the right part of the track and will be strong late.
