Sydney racing continues at Rosehill this Saturday where nine races will be run and won. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:00) #theraces Handicap 1100m
8 Secret Lady (Bet Now: $4.20) on top. Gary Portelli trained first starter who has trialled twice in readiness for her first start at the races. Ran sharp time in winning a trial here recently over 900m in a field of five. Gets the 3kg claim here, should press forward provided she jumps and I think she might be the way to go here.
7 Sangita (Bet Now: $3.10) has the race experience which is why she goes in here but I couldn’t get near her at the opening price of $2.80. Debuted under the lights at Canterbury and was just fair I thought in running third. Came off the bit on the turn and never really looked likely. Think she’s very short odds, but as I said, race experience is gold.
6 Pythia (Bet Now: $61.00) is a daughter of Not A Single Doubt on debut for the Noel Mayfield-Smith team. This girl has only had the one trial, which resulted in her winning at Hawksebury in okay time. Probably has to improve off that here, but she gets the claim for Adkins and any rain will help given her breeding suggests she’ll swim.
Race 2. (12:35) Schweppes Handicap (72) 1500m
5 Popular (Bet Now: $4.40) just gets the nod for me. Trialled up really well prior to resuming at Warwick Farm in a maiden where I thought she was quite impressive in winning, getting up near the inside under Avdulla in a race where the form has held up alright. She is the one with upside, draws well and I think she can knock off the fav.
That fav is 2 Unforgotten, (Bet Now: $1.70) who was very impressive last Saturday in winning here, coming from last on the turn and producing a brilliant turn of foot late to overhaul Beacon and get the win. My query with that win was what did she beat. Don’t think the field carried as much depth as what it does here, but she is a Waller horse on the back up and they get a tick for me.
If we get a soft track with tempo, look for an improved showing from 1 The Mighty Fed (Bet Now: $15.00) . He ran over 1400m at Randwick a fortnight back and just got too far back in a slowly run affair behind Warranty. That form has held up via that filly running well on Cup Day as well as All Too Soon winning on Tuesday. Blinkers go on also.
Race 3. (13:10) Tab.com.au Handicap (85) 2400m
3 Karavali (Bet Now: $2.60) looks the way to go. Kris Lees trained mare who lapped up the big track and 2000m a fortnight back at Randwick, getting into her work 300m and going right on with it for a dominant win. Takes on a field with less depth I feel, and she appears as though she’ll eat up further. One of the betters on the card.
2 Olympic Academy (Bet Now: $6.50) is just an absolute beauty for the Kris Lees team. He is getting on in years but continues to race well at a solid level. Total forgive last start at Warwick Farm. Stop/start race shape didn’t suit, and he had a poor post race recovery. Has run well at Rosehill before and Josh Parr steers from the paint.
4 Last Wish (Bet Now: $11.00) could be a sneaky improver here at double figure odds. Didn’t mind his effort in the Karavali race, running third after getting a fair way back in the run. He is a winner at Rosehill, he has upside and he has a fab record at 2400m. He will be the save each-way speck for mine at 12/4.65.
Race 4. (13:50) Cellarbrations Handicap (75) 1100m
6 Bon Amis (Bet Now: $1.65) just wins for mine. 900m races at Newcastle are hard to get enthused about as a Saturday form reference, but wow, you have to watch the replay of this boy winning. He absolutely toyed with them like it was a barrier trial and ran splits of a horse who could be blacktype quality. Only bad luck will beat him.
4 Magicaz (Bet Now: $8.00) had really good market support when resuming at Warwick Farm a couple of Wednesdays back and she did a mighty job to get as close as she did given she was giving them a huge start on the turn when third to Sikhing Glory. She does go well second up too and off the resumption, I can’t ignore her.
7 World Of Hope (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Dean Binaisse trained mare from Victoria who resumed on Sale Cup Day over 1000m and I thought she was excellent against the track behind a very promising horse in Seven Year Reward. The key to this mare is a wet track. If we get a genuine soft track, she’s a knockout hope.
Race 5. (14:30) Hyland Race Colours Handicap (83) 1800m
This race is really thrown up now with I Am Serious out. In a race with no set leader, I’d like to see Adkins roll along here on 5 Be Like Dad (Bet Now: $6.00). Sat off the pace last Wednesday at Canterbury and closed off well when second to Shield Wall, but you go back to the Autumn and this horse was at his best when on speed. If he does do this, gee I think he’ll give a sight.
6 Intueri (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Team Hawkes trained gelding who ran over the 1550m at Canterbury last Wednesday and I thought he did a pretty good job in defeat when second to Cellarman. Chased hard the entire straight to get that horse but that one just had the soft run behind the pace and pounced. Hard to beat here up to 1800m.
7 Miss Dubois (Bet Now: $3.50) is the watch horse here. Smart mare for the Matty Dunn yard who comes through the race won by I Am Serious at Randwick a fortnight back. Just got a mile out of her ground due to the tempo but I loved the way she closed off late in the piece. She is one who will eat up this trip and is a must for exotics.
Race 6. (15:10) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1400m
13 Highway Sixtysix (Bet Now: $3.60) on top for me. Smart looking filly for the Danny Williams team who comes off a Wagga maiden win last week, but it was quite impressive to the eye. Carved over to lead from the wide gate quite comfortably before taking control and dashing clear when asked for the big effort by Nick Heywood. Draws a touch awkwardly here but hard to knock how she is going.
8 Isla Tristana (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Matty Dunn trained mare who was hard in the market last Wednesday at Ipswich when it looked a race between her and Deer Mountain. That mare took the lead upon straightening but Isla Tristana was close and she pounced. Stable in the Highway is near unbeatable, so a big watch.
1 Wildflower (Bet Now: $34.00) is a progressive staying mare for the Longmire sisters who can run an improved race here. Resumed over 1500m here a couple of Saturdays back where she got well off them in the run and didn’t really do much behind I Am Serious but didn’t pull up 100% post race, so there were excuses. If we get rain, I think she’s a first four threat.
Race 7. (15:50) ATC Handicap (83) 1500m
4 Stonebrook (Bet Now: $2.15) won four of four to kick off his career, the latest over 1550m at Canterbury. He then went back to Randwick and 1400m and for mine he just lacked the zip and that was the difference between he and his victor, Passage Of Time. Back up to 1500m, he should ping straight to the front and take some holding out.
5 Just Dreaming (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Kris Lees trained mare who should take some beating here third up. Ran over this trip at Randwick a fortnight back and for mine, rachel King just overdid it a touch on speed. Went that fraction too hard which set the race up perfectly for I Am Serious. That form should hold up well and third up on her favourite track, she’s right in the game.
8 Makeadane (Bet Now: $21.00) is a horse I am willing to forgive for his last start failure under the Canterbury lights. Just didn’t appear 100% in his action, running last, and post race he had excuses. Trialled on Monday and looked much better without really being extended. If he brings his A-Game, he’s a knockout chance.
Race 8. (16:30) 2018 ATC Membership Now Open Sprint (84) 1200m
6 Overstep (Bet Now: $17.00) looks a great each way play here. Chris Waller trained mare who resumed in the Northwood Plume on Caulfield Guineas Day and it was just a total forget/forgive job given she was back on a day where it was hard to make ground. Has run very well second up in the past, and the pace engaged here will suit her.
I think if she doesn’t do too much work early in the run, 9 Zonk (Bet Now: $2.50) looks a major threat. Won brilliantly fresh at Canterbury before going to Warwick Farm where she was wide no cover on speed, albeit on one turn, yet looked to be going like the winner but she had no answers late for Neyla’s Girl, who went enormous in the Highway on Saturday, so the form looks okay, and third up, she should be ready.
4 Machinegun Jubs (Bet Now: $10.00) dumped Bowman at Randwick and was declared a late scratching. She properly resumed a fortnight back over 1000m at Randwick and while she never threatened, she stuck on pretty well in defeat behind Fickle Folly, with that form holding up via I Thought So on Cup Day. Very good second up record too and gets the 3kg claim.
Race 9. (17:20) Show Some Betiquette Handicap (80) 1300m
3 Dreamforce (Bet Now: $3.70) for me in the get out. Quality galloper resuming for John Thompson with a couple of key gear changes next to his name. Blinkers on, Winkers off FT and the big one, he’s been gelded. This could be the making of him. Flies fresh and he’s been a couple of solid trials in good time to tune up.
1 King Darci (Bet Now: $5.50) is three weeks between runs since racing over the Randwick 1400m where he sat off a pretty slow speed and was there to win but he just lacked the turn of foot to go with Improvement, who had it soft on speed. Home track, 1300m, hard fit, gets the 3kg claim…ticks plenty of boxes. Just wish he was up to 1500m.
4 Barthelona (Bet Now: $11.00) is the horse at silly odds here at $16. His form in Victoria is very good. Ran on Moe Cup Day and was a clear eye catcher, working home with purpose late behind Hokkaido in a race where the form has already been franked. Stable are very good when they bring them to Sydney from Melbourne and he has that fitness in the legs.
