The Parks track at Morphettville is where Adelaide racing will take place this Saturday with a strong eight race card. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:01) Goldin Farms Handicap (70) 1250m
3 Dexter You Devil (Bet Now: $7.50) on top in a race I don’t really want a bar of to be fair. I will say though that this horse deserves a crack in town because he has been beating the up quite comfortably back home at Port Lincoln, with the blinkers seemingly sharpening this horse right up. Spanked them by five last start and really, this race has no depth/quality.
1 Tabbing (Bet Now: $2.20) will love the drop in depth/grade after running over 1200m at the Valley on Manikato night. Sat behind the speed and was under pressure before the turn but he stuck to his guns alright late in the piece behind Sam’s Image. That form didn’t exactly stack up on Cup Day, but it doesn’t have to against this lot.
5 Canford (Bet Now: $14.00) is a two start maiden for the Balfour team but I think he can add some value into exotics. He hasn’t raced for three weeks since racing in a maiden at this track/distance where he got back and couldn’t really come on behind the low flying Lady Of Crebilly. Not sure he wins, but trifectas/first fours, throw him in.
Race 2. (13:41) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (75) 1400m
The McEvoy/Kah combo has been lethal this season and that should continue via 4 Set To Sparkle (Bet Now: $1.75). This mare gave them an absolute caning last time out over the 1400m at Balaklava, leading most of the way under Jamie Kah to win by three and ran time. You would think only bad luck gets her beat here.
3 Freedom Road (Bet Now: $7.00) is a mare in ripping form, but is five weeks between runs, which is the niggle in the back of my head. Loved the way she knuckled down to win at this track/distance last time, even though the time was slower to what Set To Sparkle has run over the same trip. Few queries, but hard to knock winning form.
6 Containment (Bet Now: $16.00) finally got the maiden out of the way in style two back at Balaklava before going to Gawler where she got well back in the run but closed off strongly on the bog behind Miss Identified. She is a mare who is in really good form, but the strike rate is a worry. Still, a definite place contender.
Race 3. (14:21) AAMI Handicap (90) 1550m
4 Kirona (Bet Now: $3.10) looks one of the standouts on the card. Five weeks between runs since racing over 1950m here where she was given absolutely every possible by Joe Bowditch but the eventual winner, Lord Lumberjack, just packed to many punches and was strong on the line. Not sure she is a stayer so back to this trip and against this, I’m keen.
1 It And A Bit (Bet Now: $2.90) has the form on the board and should take some beating. Comes through the Gawler Cup where he tried very hard to reel in the local Lady Silhouette, but that mare was too strong and holding this bloke to the line. Tends to save his best for this track/distance and Tourneur on. Ticks a few boxes.
5 Penny For A Pound (Bet Now: $3.80) also comes through the Gawler Cup and I thought she was a bit disappointing considering she did have a relatively soft trip behind the speed and seemingly had her chance to finish off. Does return to the Parks track, which she likes racing on, and again is right down in the weights after the claim.
Race 4. (15:01) Roberts Family Handicap (70) 1950m
7 Silent Warrior (Bet Now: $4.20) for me. He, like a few here, come through the 2000m race on the course proper a fortnight back. This horse was given an absolute peach by Holder, hugging the rail, pinching all the runs…he looked home. But Captain Duffy kept finding and got the bob in a deceptive finish. If he isn’t exposed too early here, I think he’ll be hard to hold out.
4 Table Of Wisdom (Bet Now: $3.70) had some good support in that Captain Duffy race but for mien he just got a bit too far back off them and was asked to do too much for a horse who doesn’t really have a turn of foot. If he is able to sit a touch closer in the run, I think he will be better off, and if that is the case, I think he’ll run well.
3 Sasun (Bet Now: $10.00) is a ripper for the Barry Brook yard. He always runs well but usually just finds one or two better on the day and that was the case again last start in the Captain Duffy race when finishing third after receiving every possible in the run under Krystal Bishop. Draws to get a good run again and he has run well here previously.
Race 5. (15:41) UBET Handicap (64) 1550m
1 Wasabi Bob (Bet Now: $2.20) is one of the hardest to beat, but $2.50 or thereabouts is quite short. Ran over the mile on the course proper a fortnight back and looked home for the most part but he was outgunned late by Jet Express. This does look his race on form, but he hasn’t won for a while now and the map is tricky.
2 Beau Rivage (Bet Now: $5.00) also comes through the Jet Express race mentioned above and I thought his effort was quite sound in defeat in running fourth. Just got a tad further back than Gatt would have like I suspect but he closed off nicely late. Another that hasn’t won for a long time but this is a winnable race.
Race 6. (16:21) Hughes Limousines Handicap (75) 1000m
I think class comes to the fore here via 1 Mystified (Bet Now: $2.50). First up with the big weight and no trials, but she has these on toast in terms of class. Has run well in Melbourne before, including a 0.8L defeat in the Creswick down the Flemington straight behind Highland Beat. They should go quick in front, so she’ll get her chance to run on.
7 Invisible Girl (Bet Now: $4.20) is two weeks back between runs for the Kennewell team since racing over the 1050m on the course proper where she was wide with cover throughout before peeling on the turn and presenting as the winner but she just didn’t have that ping that she had previously shown and just whacked away for a 1.3L sixth to Streetcar Illusion. Her previous form would see her hard to beat here.
4 Irish Mint (Bet Now: $7.00) is a handy gelding that is first up for the Richard Jolly team. This bloke didn’t win in five races last prep but he ran some good races all the same in fields which had similar depth to this. Another that resumes without a trial but he gets the inside draw as well as the 3kg claim for Wong.
Race 7. (17:10) Schweppes Handicap (70) 1400m
2 Spy Decoder (Bet Now: $3.50) is a talented horse on his day and he seems to be more genuine now he’s with Grant Young. He ran over this track/distance last Saturday and did a bit of work in the run but I thought he stuck on pretty well in defeat behind Miss Identified, finishing fifth in a race that had far more depth than this. Well placed.
3 Federal Court (Bet Now: $4.20) beat up a field of five over the 1250m here two back before racing over 1200m on the course proper where he had the suck run behind the pace but couldn’t go with them when it mattered behind Lord Aspen, a Stakes class horse. That form does read well for this and he prefers the Parks track.
7 Avoid The Missus (Bet Now: $6.00) comes through a 1360m race at Strathalbyn last start where I thought she was pretty good, charging home from the back to just miss out on picking up Show Bender. Draws to sit much closer in the run and the in form Jason Holder takes over, so hopefully he can take advantage of the gate.
Race 8. The Junction Handicap (75) 1250m
3 Magnus Knight (Bet Now: $3.10) in the get out. Ryan Balfour trained sprinter who is in really good form at the moment. Ran over 1200m at Gawler last time out on Gawler Cup Day and absolutely spanked them, sitting on speed before dashing clear when asked for the big effort and quite impressively. Should go to the front here and take some beating.
5 Call Me Curtis (Bet Now: $6.00) is a menace but he goes in the numbers. Thought he was a good thing when racing at this track/distance three weeks back but he let me down once again with an average second to Federal Court, beaten at the top of the straight and just whacking away. He’s better than that…just. Have to include him.
9 Lucky Wick (Bet Now: $11.00) is a daughter of Myboycharlie for the Francis/Grant team who resumed at Gawler a tick under a fortnight back and I loved the way she found the line late when second to Miss Cuoco, an above average mare in her own right. Second up last prep she ran third to Trogir and that horse has gone on to much better things. Definite threat and overs for sure.
