The Belmont Winter Carnival continues on Saturday where it is Beaufine Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Beaufine Stakes 🏆: View the Field for the Beaufine Stakes
Race 1. (14:02) PENINSULA DINING ROOM PLATE 1000m
I think 6 Bourbon Beau (Bet Now: $5.50) is above average. Trialled in sharp fashion prior to the debut at this track/distance a fortnight back and just forget he went around. Wide throughout no cover on a good speed and was a beaten horse on the turn. Has since trialled again, which came over 400m here, and he looked great in winning. Keen to see how he goes.
1 All Day Session (Bet Now: $9.00) is an Ashley Maley trained gelding that was bolters odds when finishing best to win over this track/distance two weeks ago, thanks to a lovely ride just off the speed from Kennedy. Has gate one to use so should get a similar run to last time. Question being can he repeat the dose because last start was somewhat unexpected.
7 Champagne Diva (Bet Now: $18.00) is a daughter of So Secret that resumes for the astute Luke Fernie team. This girl hasn’t raced since March 14 at Ascot when down the track over 1200m behind Dom To Shoot, who of course went to be competitive in the Karrakatta and place in the Sires. Resumes without a trial, but has the right form.
Race 2. (14:42) FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT HANDICAP 1200m
6 Secret Statue (Bet Now: $3.50) looks pretty good and confident he can make it 2/2 despite the big leap in grade/depth. Debuted in a Pinjarra maiden back on June 25 where he was back in the run and looked no chance where he was, but Pike got stuck into him and he produced a brilliant finale to get up and win. The cerise and white have been dominant at Belmont this season, especially with their younger horses, and I think that can continue here.
3 Silkinize (Bet Now: $8.50) should be really well suited up to 1200m for David Harrison. This three year old resumed over 1000m here two weeks ago against the older horses and was solid in defeat when third to a handy mare, Devoted Star. Up to 1200m and back to his own age, with upside to come, he’ll take a power of beating.
I think back to 3YO company certainly helps the cause of 7 Pure Dynamite (Bet Now: $81.00). Gave him a sneaky chance first up over 1000m here against the older horses, but he didn’t fire a shot at all and was awful behind Devoted Star. Up to 1200m helps, as does back to his own age. Can I see him winning? No, but can fill a first four spot.
Race 3. (15:22) TABTOUCH WESTSPEED HANDICAP 1600m
Not a great deal of confidence here, but could have something small on 11 Altamont (Bet Now: $35.00). He had over a month off prior to racing over the mile at Kalgoorlie a couple of Sundays back where he got back and battled away well behind a proven city performer, Star Value. He’ll improve off that and this isn’t a strong race.
Brock Lewthwaite has 3 Moderator (Bet Now: $4.80) going really well this time in. Put together a couple of wins on the bounce prior to racing over this track/distance last Wednesday where he got into a lovely spot just off the speed and tried very hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when second to Aberdeen Queen. Good lead that Pike remains on.
14 Stella Anne (Bet Now: $17.00) isn’t the most reliable horse going around but does have some talent when right and she’ll give a sight from near the speed, which is what she did here last Wednesday but couldn’t see out the mile on testing ground when fifth to Aberdeen Queen. Lands near the front and will give a sight I’m sure.
Race 4. (15:58) SWAN RIVER VASE 2200m
Hard fit, weight pull, I’m going for a mini upset with 8 Petticoat Junction (Bet Now: $21.00). Justin Warwick trained filly who is on the seven day back up after contesting the Belmont Oaks last Saturday where she got a mile back in the run but finished off strong when fourth to Chantrea. Takes on the older horses here, but it is WFA so she gets 51kg, and has the hard 2000m run under the belt.
What a fabulous job 1 Material Man (Bet Now: $1.40) did to win the Strickland two weeks ago. Justin Warwick took control again of his training prior to that race and he bounced back to his best with a dominant win and a much improved effort on recent runs where the jury was out on his racing future. Now he has that win on the board, he can go right on with it.
Is there a chance of 2 Taxagano (Bet Now: $11.00) finding positive form. Overall, he’s been dreadful this time in, the latest seeing him finish last in the Strickland, but interesting to note that the Blinkers are being put back on to sharpen him up and he can certainly run a positive race here if he produced anything near his best.
Race 5. (16:39) GLENROY CHAFF HANDICAP 1200m
1300m back to 1200m is interesting for 10 Windstorm (Bet Now: $1.30) but he’s got a fair amount of class to overcome that. Ran over 1300m here two weeks ago when Winx like odds and he recorded another comfortable win. Back in trip is a query but to offset that somewhat, he has gate one and can sit much closer in the run than usual.
7 Massimo (Bet Now: $10.00) has the class/quality to win. Can I back him to win? Absolutely not. Has turned it up a few times this prep but it was a proper horror show if you were on a few weeks ago when heavily backed but Pike couldn’t get clear at any stage and it was pretty much a barrier trial. Can he finally produce his best and win?
1 Multiverse (Bet Now: $27.00) is a ripper for Gary Crispin. Resumed in the Mankind race from a few weeks back here over 1200m and produced a really good run between the 600m-200m, seemingly running out of condition late but still stayed on to run third. Interesting as to whether or not he can stretch it to 1400m so remaining at 1200m I do like.
Race 6. (17:15) AMELIA PARK HANDICAP 1400m
Really keen to see 6 Inspirational Girl (Bet Now: $2.15) return to the races. Quality mare for Team Williams that resumes, having not raced since the Autumn when winning 2/2 over the mile at Ascot and was impressive in winning from off the speed. Couple of quiet trials to prepare for her return and resumes at 1400m which is interesting.
1 Flower Of Scotland (Bet Now: $4.50) is a beauty and deserves a crack at Saturday grade having won 3/3 this time in, the latest coming just over two weeks back over 1000m here when lumping 60kg and finishing hard off a moderate speed to win impressively. Jumps straight to 1400m but hard to knock a winner and a mare in form.
9 Fire Maker (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Jackie Panizza trained gelding that should be suited up to 1400m and back a bit in depth after facing Windstorm two weeks ago over 1300m here when outclassed but far from disgraced behind the very much above average three year old. Gets a lovely run from the gate and will take some beating.
Race 7. (17:50) BELMONT BOOK A BAY HANDICAP 2000m
1 Sentimental Gift (Bet Now: $3.20) for me. Team Williams trained mare that had trialled up well prior to resuming over the mile here two weeks ago where she back in the run with cover before Ramoly found clear air and she surged hard late to run second to No Apology. Lone second up run saw her win and up to 2000m is a big tick.
4 Roman Flirt (Bet Now: $2.45) is a Team Pearce trained mare that has had a super prep. Put together four on the bounce prior to racing over 2100m here two weeks back and found the line pretty well in what was a tidy Saturday staying race, finishing third to Divine Shadow. Not sure what upside she’s got but just has to hold her form to be competitive again.
6 La Bionda (Bet Now: $20.00) is a Colin Webster trained mare that has raced over 2100m here at her past couple. Won well two back before contesting a harder race here two weeks ago where she just got too far back in the run but was good late without threatening. Has a tricky racing pattern but if she’s within range on the turn, she can take this out.
Race 8. (18:20) BEAUFINE STAKES 1000m
2 Misty Metal (Bet Now: $5.00) on top. Classy sprinting mare for Team Harvey that resumes, having not raced since the Winterbottom when outclassed behind Hey Doc in a very hot sprint race that was dominated in front by the winner. Two trials leading in have been very good and she’s a mare who usually sprints very well fresh.
8 Essential Spice (Bet Now: $3.00) is a Team Pearce trained mare that had just one quiet trial prior to her resumption at this track/distance two weeks ago where she got a dream run behind the speed before Pike sliced his way through and she was hailed as the winner but got nabbed on the peg by Flow. She’ll come on from that…the knock being yet to win in three previous second up attempts.
10 Mervyn (Bet Now: $14.00) will make sure this is a proper 1000m contest given his racing style of jumping and running, which has seen him a stack of races, including a couple last prep, albeit in easier races than this. Resumes without a public trial, but can sprint well fresh and he’ll look the winner at some stage. Last bit will test.
Race 9. (18:55) Graduation Handicap (1MW) 1200m
Leaning the way of 2 Double The Pro (Bet Now: $14.00) for Luke Fernie. Had his first run for the stable last Wednesday when winning and I think the margin flattered his rivals given Pateman said post race that he pushed the button a bit early and got the staggers late. This horse has an electric turn of foot but it only lasts about 100m before flattening out. I think if he gets the set up, he can win in town again.
6 Devoted Star (Bet Now: $3.10) is a daughter of Al Maher for the Williams Team that was given a sweet steer by Pike when winning over the 1000m here two weeks ago, sitting off a good speed before angling into clear air and finishing over the top in an impressive return. She usually saves her best for when she’s produced fresh, so keen to see if she can back the resumption up.
3 Captivated Point (Bet Now: $46.00) can add some value to multiples. Former Steve Wolfe runner that is now with the Rebecca Shanks team. Hasn’t raced since June 24 at Belmont when down the track behind Flower Of Scotland but got too far back. Yet to really prove himself at metro level, but interested to see how he goes for the new stable.
