Public holiday racing in Melbourne this Monday heads to Mornington for a nine race metro program. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:45) Karingal Football Club Plate 1000m
9 Cavalini (Bet Now: $5.50) is a David Briedoake trained filly who was heavily backed when resuming at the Sale midweeks and though not suited by the slow tempo, she was really good in defeat behind an above average type in Propelle. Blinkers on to sharpen her up and Melham remaining on is a good lead.
12 Yulong Mercury (Bet Now: $4.60) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained filly who just missed out on the win first up down the Flemington straight before racing in the National at Morphettville where she was outclassed behind Marcel From Madrid. Little break between runs looks ideal and should get good three wide cover.
16 Nivalis (Bet Now: $16.00) is an Exceed And Excel filly resuming for James Cummings. This girl has only had the one career start, which came in January at Sale when running fourth to the above average Al Naifa. Tipped out, been given a good break and has trialled up really well for her return. Think she is the overs.
Race 2. (12:15) Stellar.com.au Plate 1600m
3 Champagne Friday (Bet Now: $3.50) for me. Darren Weir trains this filly, who is just over three weeks between runs since racing over 1400m at Cranbourne where she got a fair way back off the speed on the bog and while she never really looked entirely happy on the track she worked home strongly to run fourth to Touch A Cloud. Up to the mile looks her go and Lane takes over.
4 Daisley (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Street Boss filly for Robbie Griffiths who is going really well at the moment and I don’t think a win is too far away. Attempted to lead all the way over 1400m on the Pakenham Synthetic last time out and gave a really good kick on speed but was just no match late for Red Liberty. Looks to get map favours this time and the mile should be no issue.
12 Superior Rose (Bet Now: $11.00) is on the quick back up for the Robbie Laing team after racing over 1400m at Ballarat on Thursday where she got a mile off them in the run and never looked a winning chance, but she stuck on and was good late behind Flogga. Up to the mile looks perfect and I like she is on the quick back up.
Race 3. (12:50) Luke Duhig Memorial Plate 1200m
8 Red Devil (Bet Now: $4.80) looks a reasonably safe option. He was very unlucky last time out on the Geelong Synthetic behind Speak Softly. He wouldn’t have won but I think had he got clear air at the right time, he should have finished much closer. Hopefully gets clear air from the draw and a bit of rain certainly won’t harm his chances.
11 Bralca’s Gem (Bet Now: $2.90) is a Fastnet Rock filly who will appreciate the drop back to maiden grade. She contested a benchmark race first up at Sale and her run was a beauty, surging hard late to just miss out on picking up Miss Norway in a drive to the line. Back to her home track and draws to get a sweet run.
5 Front Of Stage (Bet Now: $13.00) is around a month between runs since debuting over 1200m on a bog at Hamilton. He was dipping and diving throughout the contest but his finale behind Helcrimson was pretty. Think he’ll be better suited over further, but firmer footing a big tick, has upside and Meech rides.
Race 4. (13:25) Handyman Steel Supplies Plate 1200m
I reckon 3 Greyworm (Bet Now: $1.90) is a really good gamble here. Mick Kent trains this son of Master Of Design, who is on debut. Was formerly trained by Kris Lees, where he won three trials in NSW before being sent to the Kent team. Looked very sharp in a May 28 jump out win at Cranbourne and I’d suggest he’s ready to rock and roll.
6 River House (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Matthe Enright trained gelding who was hard in the market when debuting over 1100m at Sale around six weeks ago where he sat near the speed throughout and tried hard but just lacked the killer blow when a close up third to Mr Warbucks. Jamie Mott takes over and hopefully he can get cover from the sticky draw.
9 Troubleshot (Bet Now: $26.00) is a Paul Worthington trained gelding who has finished third in both runs this time in. Worked home well first up at Moe before racing on a bog at Bairnsdale where he got a mile off them but finished off nicely late to grab a placing. Been given a little freshen up to recover from that gut buster and blinkers on first time.
Race 5. (14:00) Anchor Point Engineering Handicap (64) 1200m
I’ll take a chance on 12 Pageantry (Bet Now: $14.00) formerly trained by the Freedman camp but is now with Darren Weir. This girl has shown city, even blacktype, ability in the past, but for some reason, she just couldn’t put it together. Can the Weir magic work with this girl? I’ll be gambling that it indeed will.
4 Typhoon Rubi (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained filly who was a drifter in betting when debuting at Werribee but despite the fluc, gee she was impressive. Admittedly she had the beaut sit off the speed, but she still had to put them away and she did it rather comfortably. Horrible draw, but looks talented.
14 Behave (Bet Now: $13.00) could be a bit of value here also. Mick Kent trains this filly, who is nearly a month between runs since racing at Sale where she sat back in a slowly run race and couldn’t come on behind all the way winner Little Gypsy. Looks to be more speed here and she can get the suck run and have last say.
Race 6. (14:35) Hoad Construction Handicap (64) 1600m
I reckon there might be a bit of value here, potentially, in the shape of 10 Stryking Miss (Bet Now: $8.50). Wez Hunter trains this mare, who scored a good win over 1500m here two back before going to Warracknabeal where she had no luck at all and arguably should have won behind Scroll. If she gets better luck here, convinced she’ll run well.
1 La Volt (Bet Now: $1.55) does look the leader. He was on speed last time out over 1400m at Werribee and gave a pretty solid kick when Thornton asked for the effort but Shauquin just was a bit too good on the day. Third up at the mile looks ideal, claim helps and should get every chance from the good barrier.
7 Albert’s Lass (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Feek trained mare who resumed on the bog at Ballarat over 1400m. Never really looked happy on the bog but stuck on quite well in defeat behind Captain Harry. Firmer footing does help her cause, trained here and the claim for Zac Spain is a big, big tick. Knockout chance.
Race 7. (15:10) Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (64) 2000m
6 But It’s True (Bet Now: $8.00) gets one last chance for me. He has teased in four runs this time in but hasn’t been able to go on with it, the latest coming at Ballarat on a bog when closing off late behind Gimme Strength. Firmer footing, up to 2000m and he gets Lane aboard, plus he finds a thin race. He gets his chance.
1 The Thug (Bet Now: $7.00) looks one of the hardest to beat. Found the class a bit much first up Flemington before stepping back in grade at Bendigo where he ran a close up fourth to All Out Of Love. Third up at 2000m looks ideal and the claim for young Kersley is a big tick. Goes close to winning if he can overcome the draw.
11 Wimborne (Bet Now: $6.50) looks to be racing in okay form for Robbie Laing. He was coming back in trip when racing over 1700m at Geelong last start where he got got back and sightly held up before getting clear and making decent ground late in the piece. Should have no trouble with 2000m and has upside.
Race 8. (15:50) Frankston Motor Group Handicap (64) 1000m
5 Mutual Respect (Bet Now: $3.30) looks the one. Heavily backed when debuting over 1000m on a bog at Moe and despite doing plenty wrong, he proved far too classy for his rivals and landed some huge bets. Back on his home track now on firmer footing, good gate, Jake on…gee he ticks alot of boxes to be winning.
4 Yulong Yongxing (Bet Now: $7.00) looks to be going okay for Ciaron Maher. Looked in need of the run first up on the Pakenham Synthetic before a game third at Sale. Worked to the line well but did have every chance. Interesting to see what Regan does here. Perhaps their best chance is to sit back, get cover and have last say.
3 The Mayor (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Logan McGill trained galloper who is over a month between runs since racing during the Warrnambool Carnival where he was a hard luck tale behind Manhattan Spirit. Wouldn’t have won but should have finished much closer. Got badly held up and then checked at the wrong time. Should get a lovely run from the draw and is trained here.
Race 9. (16:30) Les Taggart Last Drinks @ Mornington Handicap (70) 1200m
9 Toosbuy (Bet Now: $3.30) for me in the get out. Brett Scott trains this gelding, who will no doubt reach city grade and during the Winter months, with wet tracks, he’ll be a force with the right placement. Excellent resumption at Sale when pipped on the peg by Dane Thunder. Is a second up winner and if he gets a bit of give, that would be perfect.
12 Moonlight Ruby (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented gelding for Dale Short who resumed over 1100m at Bendigo where he got a mile back in the run but his late splits were excellent when closing off to run third to Huge Action. Is a winner second up and if the speed goes on here, he’ll be the one to watch out for.
2 Believing (Bet Now: $7.50) is a consistent performer for Robbie Griffiths who doesn’t win out of turn but is hardly far away. Good win two back at Pakenham before finishing midfield in the Dane Thunder race mentioned above. He tends to race best when ridden cold with cover and ambushing. Gets that scenario here.
