The Scone Cup Carnival kicks off this Friday with an eight race card, headlined by the feature event across the two days, the $200,000 Listed Scone Cup (1600m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:25) Horsepower & Cressfield Maiden Handicap 1000m
10 Tryst (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Chris Waller trained filly on debut here who looks ready to go to my eye. Has had three career trials to date in Sydney, but just the one this prep, which came over 900m at Rosehill but she looked to quite nicely to the eye. Never easy to debut in these hotly contested maidens but she’s in the right stable.
6 Artefiori (Bet Now: $4.60) is a regally bred filly resuming for Paul Messara. By Choisir out of Ortensia so she’s bred to be anything. Had two career runs to kick off the career in the Summer and ran well without winning, clearly showing signs she’d improve with the prep under the belt. That looks to be the case if the trials are any indicator.
1 Fort Jackson (Bet Now: $12.00) is a well bred four year old on debut for Stephen Jones. This bloke has had his issues when trained in Sydney but has had a couple of trials for Jones and has looked quite good to the eye. Meets a field with a bit of depth but draws well and does get Bullock steering. Place chance for sure.
Race 2. (13:00) Pages Event Hire Maiden Plate 1300m
4 Metamorphic…(Bet Now: $2.80) ah he’s been very costly right throughout his career but I think he finds a very winnable race here. Heavily backed when resuming over 1400m at Newcastle and he looked home for the most part but was nabbed late by the impressive Home Win. Back to 1300m I think suits, he’ll be better with cover and should naturally improve fitness wise.
7 Deft (Bet Now: $2.90) looks a nice filly for James Cummings, who is second up here. Debuted at Keninsgton where she came off the bit before the turn and stuck on okay without threatening behind Luskintyre Lass. That followed several eye catching trials, so I’d like to see her again, especially on a bigger track.
8 Fudgewedge (Bet Now: $6.00) is an Allan Kehoe trained filly who was a notable drifter in betting when resuming at Wyong and the market knew as she really failed to flatter after receiving a relatively nice run in transit. Was down to run at Parkes but stable elects to tackle the harder option here, if that’s a guide.
Race 3. (13:35) Newgate Stallions Handicap (Class 1) 1600
Siding with 7 Palmateer (Bet Now: $3.90). Not sure she beat much last time out in a Kembla Grange maiden but she was quite dominant in winning I thought, sitting off a slow speed before angling to clear air and letting down powerfully to score. Looks to get a similar set up here and race doesn’t look overly strong.
I think 2 Mount Panorama (Bet Now: $8.00) is a very interesting runner. Resumes for Gary Moore after a somewhat frustrating Spring/Summer prep but that has been the norm for this horse. In saying that, he has had a couple of nice trials to prepare for his return and first up at the mile tells me he’s forward enough to run well.
8 Bluesbro (Bet Now: $9.50) is on the quick back up for the Krsiten Buchanan camp after racing over the 1450m at Muswellbrook last Friday where he sat up outside the speed throughout and in the end, it was the better turn of foot from Doosey that was the difference between winning and losing. Up to the mile is a big tick and has run well here before.
Race 4. (14:10) Inglis 2YO Challenge 1100m
9 Bare Naked Lady (Bet Now: $5.50) on top in a race I’ll steer clear of from a betting perspective. Tracey Bartley trains this filly, who was hard in the market when debuting in the Miss Finland at Muswellbrook where she did plenty of work in the run and I thought she stuck on well in defeat behind Lady Of Shalott. Trials leading up to that were very good so happy to give her another look.
13 Winspear (Bet Now: $9.00) is a nippy filly for the Steve Engelbrecht team who was unwanted in betting when debuting on Anzac Day at Randwick in what looked a strong two year old race and she was okay with being great behind Euwase. Ran slick time in a trial win at Kembla prior and I think the drop in depth here will suit.
14 Dundee Lee (Bet Now: $23.00) was somewhat unwanted in betting when debuting in the Miss Finland at Muswellbrook and while she didn’t win, her run behind stablemate Lady of Shalott was okay. This race looks weaker, she draws a soft gate and gets McEvoy steering, so in a thin race, I think she has to be included.
Race 5. (14:45) Widden Stud Handicap (Class 1) 1100m
8 Taniko (Bet Now: $3.90) on top. James Cummings trains this filly, who was good on debut behind subsequent Rosehill winner Sedition before going to the front at Wyong and winning quite comfortably as a $1.30 pop. Bit more depth here clearly but you have to like the way she is going about it and I reckon 1100m on the big track is ideal.
10 Connemera (Bet Now: $4.00) isn’t badly in now with the scratchings re barriers. Don’t think she beat much on debut at Gosford on Anzac Day but she did it impressively I thought, sitting on speed, doing work but then showing a nice turn of foot to put them away. More depth here clearly, but looks a nice type.
11 Katgully Red (Bet Now: $8.50) looks a nice type for local trainer Jenelle Butler. Debuted over 1000m here where the connections and perhaps punters thought he had talent, backing him in late and they were rewarded with a pretty impressive win, albeit against a field which had far less depth than what he faces here, but he ran time and is trained here, so he has a few things going for him.
Race 6. (15:20) Turannga Farm Handicap (Class 2) 1300m
1 Savatiano (Bet Now: $3.30) on top. James Cummings trains this well bred filly, who is first up here after a solid Spring/Summer, which ended with a down the track effort behind the above average mare Sugar Bella. Good fresh horse and her recent trials leading up to her resumption have been sharp to the eye.
2 Siam (Bet Now: $4.40) is a James Cummings trained galloper who was a drifter in betting when resuming at Kembla but Josh Parr rode the horse a treat, getting him clear at the right time and once he let down, he had the momentum out wide and that was the difference between winning and losing. Keen to see what he does second up.
4 Lamma Hilton (Bet Now: $51.00) is a definite watch. Jason Coyle formerly trained this bloke but he is now with Brett Cavanough and he has had good success recently with the Dynamic cast offs. This mare is better suited over further, but first up, home track, no trials, apprentice on…I think she should be watched very closely.
Race 7. (16:00) Scone Cup 1600m
Hopefully we get decent odds about 5 Lubiton (Bet Now: $17.00 ODDS BOOST) because I think she can run a bold race in front. Good resumption behind Quilista in the Sapphire before going to the Godolphin Crown where she was wide no cover throughout behind Pecans. Very good record at the mile and looks to map ideally here. I think she’ll give a sight.
1 Duca Valentinois (Bet Now: $7.50 ODDS BOOST) was well fancied leading into the Hawkesbury Cup last time out but the slow tempo set by Ecuador didn’t help his cause at all in what was a total forgive I thought behind Kingsguard. Think we will get a decent rolling speed here so for mine he’ll get his chance to run on, and he’s certainly good enough.
16 Bezel (Bet Now: $51.00 ODDS BOOST) is absolutely flying this prep fro David Smith. Godolphin cast off who is loving the country air at Mudgee. Belted them two back at Kensington before going to Hawkesbury where he didn’t have much luck nearer the inside behind Up ‘N’ Rolling. Mile on the big track looks a good set up and he can run well.
Race 8. (16:40) Pryde's Easifeed Noel Leckie Country Cup (85) 1400m
Back Me: Tough race but I’ll side with 14 My Tagosan (Bet Now: $6.50). Too far back two back in the Country Championship Final behind Victorem before going to Hawkesbury where he wasn’t far off Up ‘N’ Rolling. Has a really good record on his home track and I reckon a fast run 1400m is exactly what he is looking for. Gets it here.
1 After all That (Bet Now: $4.60) is racing really well at the moment for the Rod Northam team and he looks well placed here despite the gate. Too far back in a slowly run affair last time out in the Tamworth Cup but closed off well late behind Plucky Girl. Look for him to snag back for three wide cover and ambush them late.
3 Brazen (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Brett Cavonaugh trained galloper who comes here off the back of a solid fourth in the Tamworth Cup, won in dominant fashion by Plucky Girl. That mare had it way too easy in front and rightfully dashed away when Orman asked for the effort. Brazen didn’t turn it up and was quite game I thought. He can run well I think despite wanting further.
