Adam takes a look at Saturday’s racing and outlines which runners you should be adding to your blackbooks and why.
Rosehill Blackbookers
Heza Playboy – Settled last, peeled out wide and got home very nicely for fourth. Bede Murray’s stable is going well at the moment and he has a handy horse in the making. Too soon for the Spring Champion Stakes, but maybe look out for him over further in the Autumn. He still has plenty to learn but the when the penny drops with him, he’ll win a nice race for sure.
Ofcourseican – Wow, didn’t she finish the race off in good style. Was giving them about six lengths at the 300m but gee if the race was 50m further, she wins. I’ll be dumbfounded if there isn’t a win in her this prep.
Torio’s Quest – Was given a soft run by Bossy, got off the fence, gave chase to Master Of Design, who had a picnic in front, but couldn’t quite reel him in and settled for second. Very good return by this bloke. Give him a dry track, 1600-2000m race at Handicap level, and he’ll be winning a group race at least.
Mourayan and Ironstein – Mourayan settled midfield, pulled out and worked to the line well for a third, albeit a fair way from the first two. Ironstein got well back, looked to be bolting but he just had no luck in the straight and finished fourth and should have run third and probably challenged the first two. Both of these horses are right on track for the Metropolitan.
Moonee Valley
Zabeelionaire – Can I declare him the Derby winner if he runs in the race? Really caught the eye on debut and did the same again on Saturday with a slashing second after being well off the pace at the 400m. Leon Corstens always finds a good horse and he has a ripper here. Can’t wait for him to get to 2000m+ on a bigger track.
Extra Zero and Anudjawun – Bit surprised to see these two perform so well on Saturday. The race was dominated from the front and the back markers realistically had no hope but these two finished off the race powerfully. Back them when they get over more ground at Flemington.
Alcopop – Love him. Was very gallant in defeat over an unsuitable trip against some very good horses. Did a good job to finish second by Rekindled Interest and if you want to back a roughie for the Caulfield Cup and/or Cox Plate, Alcopop is your horse. He is back to his best form, maybe even in better form.
Southern Speed and Absolutely – You know Southern Speed was given no hope by connections when Clare Lindop chose to stay in Adelaide. But, the blinkers did the trick and she ran a much improved race. Needs to repeat that effort for her to be a force in the Spring while Absolutely is on target with a nice close from her to finish sixth. Mick Kent has her right on track.
Woorim – Gee he is top class. He toyed with his rivals on Saturday, despite carrying 60.5kg and rider Damian Browne losing the whip on the home turn. Give him a dry track and a solid tempo and he has the second best final 200m in racing, behind Black Caviar. Maybe the Sir Rupert Clarke?
