A wet track and mudlarks will be the order of the day when Sydney racing heads to Randwick on Saturday for a nine race card where it is June Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is heavy (10) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (11:30) : Club Redfern Plate 1000m:
Back Me: 5 Lipizzan (Bet Now: $2.60) is a handy Sebring filly for the Portelli camp and looks the one to beat. She ran over 1100m at Canterbury last time out where she defied a betting drift to lead all the way under Rachel King. Gets the claim for Panya here, should lead and take some running down back to 1000m.
Big Danger: 4 Champagne Cuddles (Bet Now: $1.90) is the big watch here. Bjorn Baker trained filly that was touted as a leading Magic Millions contender off the back of an outstanding debut win at Rosehill in late October. Hasn’t raced since, but a recent trial, to the eye was very good. She has the potential to blow these away.
Long Shot: 6 Exceed The Knight (Bet Now: $10.00) is a handy looking filly for the Waterhouse/Bott team who debuted over the 900m at Newcastle where she was a bit tardy to begin with and that probably cost her the win when second to Pymble. With a cleaner getaway here, I think she’ll lead and might take some running down.
Race Two (12:05) : Anderson Handicap (72) 1100m:
Back Me: 3 In Times Of War (Bet Now: $3.90) goes on top for me here. Handy filly for the Waller yard who was wearing out the patience of punters but she got back in the good books a fortnight back at this track/distance against the mares. Back to her own age now, hard fit and is good on wet ground. Keen.
Big Danger: 2 Cadogan (Bet Now: $5.25) can be an absolute nightmare to follow but it was hard not to be impressed by his resumption on Scone Cup Day, dashing home hard nearer the inside under Jason Collett to get the win. For his supporters, you’d hope that does his confidence the world of good because we know he is definitely up to this level.
Long Shot: 1 Conchita (Bet Now: $23.00) could be the improver here at odds. Above average filly for Paul Perry who has contested Stakes races right throughout her career so she gets her chance against this lot. Led and tired in the Denise’s Joy at Scone, but she maps well here and gets the claim for Panya.
Race Three (12:40) : TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1000m:
Back Me: 10 Can’t Skate (Bet Now: $41.00) could well be a decent each way play here at huge odds. Handy mare for Greg Dury who can perform well when she’s on song. First up last time in, she arguably should have won a Highway at Rosehill. If they go hard in front, she will be the one charging.
Big Danger: 3 Clipper (Bet Now: $2.10) is a Highway specialist and looks a major contender here. Ran over this track/distance in a Highway a fortnight back and was given a lovely steer by Tim Clark to get the job done impressively. Bolted up in her lone run when produced second up and off that fresh effort, she looks to have come back in super order.
Long Shot: 7 Mr Pumblechook (Bet Now: $12.00) is a former Greg Bennett trained gelding who had his first run for Cody Morgan at Gunnedah where he got back in the run and finished off his race quite nicely. Randwick 1000m looks ideal and is a leading contender despite the high quality engaged here.
Race Four (13:15) : Leading The Way Stayers Cup 3200m:
Back Me: 1 Broadside (Bet Now: $2.35) on top. Top winner over 2000m at Rosehill three weeks ago before backing up seven days later in the McKell Cup where he sat on speed and was left in front too far out, which probably brought about his demise when second to Allergic. Gives the impression he will eat up the two miles and has upside.
Big Danger: 4 Richard Of Yorke (Bet Now: $7.50) was very solid in the market last time out in the McKell Cup over 2400m here where he had a nice sit near the speed after doing some work early on in the run and that just told on him late behind Allergic. Obviously a query at the two miles but Waller wouldn’t run unless he thought the horse could handle it.
Long Shot: 5 Plot Twist (Bet Now: $13.00) is just an out and out stayer that will stay longer than the in laws. He too comes through the McKell Cup where he got a mile back in the run and was never really a threat but I thought he closed off okay without threatening. The further the better for him so the two miles is perfect and he remains down in the weights.
Race Five (13:50) : Heard Agency Handicap (72) 2000m:
Back Me: 9 So Splendid (Bet Now: $6.50) is an in form filly for Chris Waller who looks hard to beat here. Looked all over a winner when racing over 2100m at Gosford last time out but she just couldn’t quite finish it off when second to Red Viking. That hard run against the older horses should top her off nicely for this.
Big Danger: 7 Outback Rain (Bet Now: $6.00) is the interesting runner here. Victorian visitor for the Briedoake camp who took on the older horses on Echuca Cup Day over the mile and she was very impressive to the eye, finishing off strongly and attacking the line with purpose. Looks to have a liking for tracks with give in it and is in well at the weights.
Long Shot: 13 Roseito (Bet Now: $13.00) is still eligible for a Class One at the provincials but the fact the stable continue to run her in town tells me they must have an opinion of her. She ran in a Highway at this track/distance two weeks ago and closed off quite nicely I thought behind the in form Canberra galloper Hay Now. Looks quite progressive and I’m confident she can measure up here.
Race Six (14:30) : Pemulwuy Handicap (80) 1400m:
Back Me: No idea what to do here. I’ve landed with 9 Labdien (Bet Now: $5.50) but with no confidence at all in a real dartboard affair. She is on the back up after racing last weekend at Rosehill where she closed off well but had to settle for second to Cottage. Wet ground is her go, which she gets here, draws well and Collett jumps back on.
Big Danger: 12 Lani Girl (Bet Now: $9.50) was kept safe in the market when resuming at the provincials at Kembla Grange where she sat worse than midfield throughout before Avdulla gave her clear air and finished off strongly to run a close up fifth. She is a second up winner and has run well in town before, so don’t dismiss her.
Long Shot: 2 Wine Tales…(Bet Now: $17.00) sweet lord. Why I am putting her in I’m not sure because she is the CEO of Dairy Farmers, but I am sucked in by her trial at Rosehill. To the eye, it was very good and she is a mare who does tend to save her best when fresh. No claim either could be a sign of confidence perhaps.
Race Seven (15:10) : AHC Junes Stakes 1100m:
Back Me: 2 The Monstar (Bet Now: $5.00) goes on top in a very thin Stakes race for the Sprinters. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where he loomed to win under Angland but he couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Kudero. He loves soft ground and from all reports, he has trialled at home previously on heavy ground sensationally. Good enough for me.
Big Danger: 1 Felines (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Kris Lees trained mare who can be a bit quirky, but we know that on her day she is very good at this trip and has been more consistent this time in. She comes through the Ortensia at Scone where she sat back off them in a leader dominated affair and couldn’t come on behind the nippy Quatronic. 1000m is her go, and she handles all conditions, plus the stable is flying. Can she handle 1100m? I’d say yes.
Long Shot: The wet track brings a horse like 12 Wouldn’t It Be Nice (Bet Now: $10.00) into exotic conversations. Thought he didn’t do a bad job last time out in the Ortensia in a leader dominated affair, making up ground late. He is a swimmer who loves Randwick, he’s hard fit and I can see him running a very cheeky race at odds.
Race Eight (15:50) : Souths Juniors Handicap (80) 2000m:
Big Danger: 5 Nothing Box (Bet Now: $4.80) had confident late market support three weeks ago at Rosehill over 2000m but I thought he was a bit disappointing behind Broadside despite having a relatively soft trip behind the speed. That was his first poor effort this prep and I am happy to forgive him for that and give him another look here.
Big Danger: 11 Dowdstown Charlie (Bet Now: $5.50) is the best swimmer in Australia, or Sydney at least, so he goes in for sure. He ran over 1900m at Canterbury last time out and stuck it out very well I thought when fourth to in form stayer The Gavel. He has a great record at Randwick, up to 2000m suits and the heavy track is an obvious tick.
Long Shot: 12 Birds Of Tokyo (Bet Now: $5.50) is another mudlark who has been sent to Sydney looking for the rain and she gets it. Ran over 1800m at Casterton last time out where she had a nice sit near the speed and fought on nicely to run fourth. Gets onto a heavy track which she revels on and gets a great chance for mine.
Race Nine (16:30) : Leith Group Handicap (78) 1200m:
Back Me: 8 Bratislava (Bet Now: $5.25) is a quality three year old for Godolphin and Darren Beadman. His three runs this time in have been at Canterbury and he has been impressive each time he has stepped out. He ran over 1250m last time out where he sat off the speed with Heywood steering and just never really got the right run when second to Best Guess. He is a gelding who is putting together a nice record and looks hard to beat here.
Big Danger: 10 Clear The Beach (Bet Now: $4.80) was unwanted in betting when resuming at Rosehill three weeks back but despite the alarming market drift, he was outstanding in winning, and though the margin was dwindling, it was dominant. Ran out of condition and was floating around in front, but he was very good. He can measure up here.
Long Shot: 7 Stella Ombra (Bet Now: $12.00) is the very interesting runner here. Kelly Schweida trained four year old gelding who is quite talented on his day and has a booming finish on him. Ran over 1100m at Doomben four weeks ago and worked home with purpose behind the Stakes performed Rare Occurrence. When the stable travels, follow with confidence.
