The reopening of the Murray Bridge track a couple of weeks back was one of the best things to happen for SA racing in a long time and it’ll get its chance to host a Saturday program this weekend. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out three metres from the 1200m chute; Out five metres from the 800m-Winning Post; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:56) Magic Millions Handicap (70) 1200m
Have said for a couple of months that 2 Deep Force (Bet Now: $1.45) is a blacktype class animal and am confident this will be another stepping stone before he reaches that level. This Deep Field gelding debuted at Morphettville a couple of weeks ago where he led all the way and won impressively. Time was nothing flash, but just have to trust your eye sometimes and he trialled like a bomb here prior to the debut.
1 Pelican (Bet Now: $3.30) is a daughter of Fastnet Rock for the Hayes/Dabernig team that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since All Star Mile Day at Flemington when down the track and probably at the end of her prep behind Flit. Recent Flemington jumpout was strong to the eye and she does have reasonable form next to her name, so she should give the fav a decent run.
5 Guardian (Bet Now: $41.00) is a Safeguard gelding for the Jolly camp that has been solid enough in two runs back from a spell. Was disappointing first up at Balaklava behind Bless It Be before racing at Mildura and liked the way he stuck to the task behind impressive winner November Gale. Looks to have found a pretty strong race, so doubt he wins, but one for multiples.
Race 2. (13:31) Burke Urban Handicap (75) 1200m
6 Magic Sunset (Bet Now: $2.00) is a Fighting Sun mare for Tony McEvoy that resumes. This girl had a pretty good opening prep to her career, winning a Gawler maiden in impressive fashion before a decent run behind a good one in Notation on Cranbourne Cup Day. Loved the way she stretched out in a recent Murray Bridge trial win and stable is flying at the moment.
5 Our Benevento (Bet Now: $6.00) is a daughter of Helmet for David Aldridge who was confidently supported when resuming over 1000m here and under Stubby, she never looked like getting beat the way she was going in the run. Think she will take good improvement off that because when she was asked for an effort, she dashed, then knocked up, but still clung on. 1200m I like, proven here, winnable race…likeable.
2 Lucky Flipper (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Brian Mueller trained mare that resumes. This mare has been a ripper for a number of years and she’s back for another prep. Has a really good first up record does the eight year old and this is one of the easiest races she has contested in some time, so I think a yard/market watch would be advised as to whether or not she’s ready to go.
Race 3. (14:06) Wicks Estate Handicap (70) 2000m
Third up from a spell, 6 Chapal (Bet Now: $2.90) should just about be ready fitness wise so I’ll go his way. He ran over 2000m at Morphettville last time out where he was forced to get going early due to the slow tempo and those behind taking off. Just left him exposed late and was bloused near the peg by Exalted Craftsman. Proven performer at this trip in Melbourne last prep, so looks the one to beat.
3 Canford (Bet Now: $6.00) is bursting to win another race and I think he gets a golden chance here. He ran over 1800m at Morphettville two weeks ago where I thought he was there to beat the hot pot Charossa and looked the winner for a stride or two, but Charossa kicked strongly when asked for the effort and was too good on the line. Depth nowhere near as strong IMO, I’m keen on him running well.
12 Sasun (Bet Now: $61.00) is a son of Haradasun for Barry Brook who looks to have a fair bit of upside left. He ran over the 1950m on the Parks track last Wednesday and I thought he made up okay ground late in the piece behind Chilean Wonder in a race which looked to have a bit less depth than what he faces here, but he’s got upside and out to 2000m on a big track, he appeals.
Race 4. (14:46) Hurley Hotel Group Handicap (70) 1600m
Buttering up on 4 Despacito (Bet Now: $2.50). Tony McEvoy trains this mare, who had a break between runs when racing last Saturday at Morphettville where she was held when second to Nudge Bar, but didn’t throw in the towel and kept finding. Like that the stable backs up straight away with her, she gets a sweet run from the gate and should improve off the run.
5 Busker’s Ballard (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Ryan Balfour trained gelding who doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates but he’s been thereabouts lately and usually runs an honest race, which is what he did over 2000m at Morphettville two weeks ago when sitting back and finding the line well enough when a close up fourth to Exalted Craftsman. Reckon he wants further, but if the speed is genuine, he’ll be one of the strongest late.
7 Outinthestreet (Bet Now: $8.50) is a David Jolly trained gelding who hasn’t won in a little while but does find a winnable race here if he brings his best. He ran over this track/distance last time and closed off nicely, just missing out on the win when beaten a lip by Shop Til I Drop. I think he’s working up to win and it could well be here…but I’d prefer to watch than back him to win, but he goes in the quaddie.
Race 5. (15:26) Marshall & Brougham Handicap (82) 1400m
Want to give 4 Amberdi (Bet Now: $4.20) another look. Was really keen on her when she raced at Gawler (Metro) a few weeks ago but she just never looked likely behind the well backed Arrow Lane, with the pattern late in the day being on speed/rail was the A1 spot. Still, expected her to do a bit more. She’s better than that, and now she has the run under the belt. Can easily bounce back.
5 Dexelation (Bet Now:$4.40) has done a really good job this time in for the Jolly camp. Tough on speed win two back at Sandown, beating an impressive winner from last week, Shot Of Irish. Then went to the Mildura Cup when solid in the market and tried hard but just lacked the class behind Husson Eagle. Like him back to this level…just depends what is left in the tank.
9 Nipperkin (Bet Now: $15.00) looks suited up to 1400m. This Barry Brook trained mare ran over 1200m at Morphettville in a race where it was over after 200m when Arrow Lane crossed and led. Nipperkin was out the back in the slowly run contest and had no chance, but still made up ground in a good performance. Like her up in trip and hopefully the tempo is more genuine.
Race 6. (16:06) Spry Civil Construction Handicap (75) 1000m
I’ll go the way of 2 Mile High (Bet Now: $12.00) for the John Macmillan stable. This gelding had a two run Autumn prep where he really struggled in both runs, a shadow of what we know he’s capable of. Been given a break and his two trials leading in have been encouraging. Should get a lovely run from the draw and he does look to get a good set up to bounce back to winning form.
You’d need deep pockets when it comes to the Phillip Stokes trained 8 Nodoubtaboutit (Bet Now: $5.50) because she has been such a frustrating horse to follow over her past few preps. The talent is clearly there, she’s showed it in the past. Just hasn’t resulted in wins. Thought she was very plain first up behind Bella Vella but her best is good enough to run well here, so giving her another chance.
9 Tiara Star (Bet Now: $9.00) interests me. Will Clarken trains this mare, who was unwanted in betting when resuming in the Bella Vella race mentioned above from two weeks ago and she too was plain I thought but market said she was legless and she ran accordingly. Decent second up record and I can see them going hard in front here, so if she gets cover and a drag into the race, she could be dangerous.
Race 7. (16:46) Carlton Draught Handicap (70) 1200m
Bit of a throw at the stumps here in the shape of 12 Abbi Fede (Bet Now: $17.00) for John Hickmott. This gelding resumed at this track/distance and I loved the way he attacked the line late from near last in the run to finish third to Russian Romeo. He was accepted for a weak race at Gawler on Wednesday but stable scratched and instead accepted here, so perhaps a sign of confidence.
5 Danger Deal (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Macdonald/Gluyas trained gelding who was hard in the market when resuming on the Parks track three weeks ago and for mine, he was disappointing behind Swipe Me Right, but perhaps the genuine rolling tempo, first up, wasn’t to his liking. Been a fair while since he has won and has let punters down throughout his career…but he’s usually thereabouts.
10 Bolt I Am (Bet Now: $11.00) is going well for David Jolly. First couple of runs this prep saw him have little to no luck before going to Gawler (Metro) where Kayla Crowther took advantage of the inside gate to have the horse sit more handy in the run and he tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off. I think riding him cold and perhaps riding him for luck is the best way to steer him.
Race 8. (17:25) TAB Handicap (64) 1400m
7 Vahash (Bet Now: $3.20) for me. Tony McEvoy trains this gelding, who had trialled well prior to debuting over this track/distance where Vorster got him into a nice spot just off the speed and once he got clear air, he put the race away and was most impressive in winning. Not the strongest 64 going around here I don’t think and won’t need to improve much to be figuring in the finish.
8 Sir Johnson (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Gary Searle trained gelding who had little to no luck in his opening two runs back from a spell before going to the Parks track last Wednesday where Stubby gave him a peach ride just off the speed and the steer won the race for the gelding. Draws to get decent cover and get a nice drag into the race, where he can be dangerous with his turn of foot.
4 Alsvior (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Sue Jaensch trained gelding who had a month freshen up prior to racing over this track/distance where Paul Gatt got him into a good spot just off the speed and the Statue Of Liberty gelding tried hard but couldn’t get there and had to settle for Diplomatic Measure. Stable have had a lean run at metro level recently, but this bloke is capable of changing that.
