Nine races will be run and won on the Parks track at Morphettville on Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:41) UBET Adelaide Cup March 12 Handicap (82) 2400m
With Andrea Mantegna out, it sets up for a win for 1 Bondeiger (Bet Now: $1.95), but I couldn’t back him. Ethan Brown rode the horse an absolute treat last time out over the Moonee Valley 2500m and despite getting tired late, he clung on and got his first win since Adam met Eve. Couldn’t back him, but can’t tip against him.
3 Tunes (Bet Now: $4.20) is a fortnight between runs for the in form Grant Young team after racing over the 1950m here last Saturday where he got back off the pace and whacked away okay late behind the low flying Exalted Lightning. Much better suited at the 2400m and I’d like to see him on speed. That’s when he races best. A knockout hope if that eventuates.
5 Flying Casino (Bet Now: $8.50) comes through a 2250m race here a fortnight back won by Andrea Mantegna and once again, he ran his race in patches. He came off the bit a fair way from home and was seemingly going nowhere but he picked and was sound through the line to run third. Up to 2400m helps his cause, and really, he could win this on his day if in the mood.
Race 2. (13:16) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (90) 1400m
Field of three, so I’ll go with the outsider in 5 Whistle Stop (Bet Now: $8.50). Stuart Gower trains this bloke, who is first up since a mixed Darwin Cup prep last year where he ran well on a couple of occasions but didn’t measure up in the big one. Stable can really fire when producing their runners first up and I reckon he can stalk the two favs and have last say.
1 Mihany (Bet Now: $2.10) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained gelding that is first up here. I think this is really good placement by the stable because I’m not sure he can measure up in Melbourne this time of year but in this kind of race, he can very go close, and he looks ready to go off recent jump outs back home.
2 Strategic Demand (Bet Now: $1.95) is a Macdonald/Gluyas trained gelding who is on the quick back up after racing on the course proper last Saturday over 1200m where he got back near last in the small field of seven and couldn’t dash from where he was when fifth to stablemate Counter Pulse. Good record here and small field helps.
Race 3. (13:51) Schweppes Handicap (70) 1300m
7 Counterplay (Bet Now: $1.75) looks a near good thing here for mine. Phillip Stokes trains this filly, who is first up for the stable after a pretty solid Spring prep where she contested some quality three year old races and for the most part ran really well. Resumes without a trial, but you’d have to think class gets her home against this lot.
Couldn’t back 5 Baker’s Dozen (Bet Now: $10.00) to win even if my life depended on it, but for exotics, you have to include her. Ran over 1200m last Saturday where she got back near last on the rail and couldn’t really come on behind Regal Spur. Has a good record on the Parks track and the small field really helps her cause.
Pleased to see 1 Artful Rambler (Bet Now: $9.00) get a crack in town because she has been the form galloper in Port Lincoln this season. She has already won six races this prep, including her last two, and the big key for her is getting clear because if she does get that, she can really charge home. Very interested to see how she goes.
Race 4. (14:26) Adelaide Galvanising Maiden Plate 1250m
Surprised that 13 Port Vale (Bet Now: $3.60) ain’t shorter. I thought her resumption here three weeks back over the 1000m was a beauty when back and working home strongly behind Avanti Rose. She should eat up the 1250m here, draws the inside gate, has upside…surprised she isn’t favourite off that run. Winner comes from this trio.
9 Light The Waves (Bet Now: $3.50) is a daughter of Blackfriars on debut for the Tony McEvoy team. This girl has had two trials, firstly back in July at Warwick Farm. Now in SA and trialled up super to my eye in winning over the 900m at Murray Bridge in fast time. Very interested to see how she goes here on debut.
6 Spectate (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Richard Jolly trained son of Ambidexter who debuted over 1000m here a fortnight back and I thought he did a pretty good job. Sat on speed most of the way, tried hard but just ran out of puff late when fourth to Institution. Draws a decent barrier, Gatt sticks and he should only improve off that.
Race 5. (15:01) Kevin Tracey Handicap (90) 1000m
2 Sullivan Bay (Bet Now: $6.00) gets the nod for me. Keep in mind she was a late nomination, so the stable have seen this may be a thin race and they can get a resuming win for her. She was a real beauty during the Winter/Spring, performing at a really good level at Caulfield for the most part, with her last run being a fourth to Snitty Kitty. Jump outs have been good, she can sprint well fresh and has a fab record here.
1 Itz Invincible (Bet Now: $2.00) was really well backed when racing in the Kensington down the Flemington straight three weeks back where he tried really hard but had to settle for a close up third to surprise winner Rock ‘N’ Gold. He is near unbeatable when racing over the 1000m on the Parks track and that little freshen up should do him the world of good.
6 Certain Ellie (Bet Now: $7.00) is Paul Rocke trained mare who could stalk this hot speed and have last say. That’s what she did last time out at the Valley and got the win at nice odds, aided by a lovely ride from Brandon Stcokdale. Tourneur takes over now, and this girl is a two time winner on the Parks track, so she has a bit going for her.
Race 6. (15:36) Eckermann Conveyances Handicap (75) 1550m
Siding with 8 Enki (Bet Now: $4.20). Gordon Richards trains this four year old, who bolted up over the mile at Strathalbyn two back before racing over the Murray Bridge mile and beating all bar Dances On Stars. I reckon a strong mile seems him out so back to 1550m looks ideal and despite being in good form, he still gets in really well at the weights.
6 Game Of War (Bet Now: $3.80) will appreciate the step up to the 1550m. He ran over 1400m here last time out and was unlucky not to finish closer, getting held up at a vital stage when fourth to Lord Topper. The two runs back from a break have been very good and third up at 1550m, he should be near ready to show his best.
5 Lieder (Bet Now: $21.00) finished last in the Lord Topper race here a fortnight back and I think just put a pen through the run for mine. He sat back on a day where it was a big advantage to be up on speed. He will appreciate the step up to 1550m and provided this race isn’t run at a crawling speed, he can bounce back hard.
Race 7. (16:16) James Boags Premium Handicap (70) 1000m
Going to side with the three year old here in 7 White Kaps (Bet Now: $2.50). Gordon Richards trains this gelding, who raced at this track/distance three weeks back where he tried very hard on speed but couldn’t hold out the finishing burst of the Darren Weir filly Avanti Rose. Generally saves his best for the Parks track and he tumbles in weight.
4 French Rock (Bet Now: $7.00) has been given a little freshen up since racing over 1200m at Gawler (Metro) where he sat near the speed and kept finding under pressure to run a game third to Miss Cuoco. Has very good fresh stats and has run well both times he has seen this track. Reckon he is set up to run a beauty.
2 El Prado Gold (Bet Now: $13.00) was unwanted in betting when resuming over 1050m on the course proper a fortnight back but despite that market drift, he ran a beauty and got very close to knocking off Heart Of A Lion. The problem is that he rarely races consistently. But, a repeat effort of the resumption and he’s in the game for sure.
Race 8. (16:56) John O'Neill OAM Handicap (75) 1250m
4 Zalmona (Bet Now: $7.50) had been struggling for form for a little while but it’s high now after a couple of very impressive wins, the latest coming over the 1100m last Saturday when chasing hard from the back and just getting the stride in. Think the rise to 1250m looks ideal and he gets the claim for in form apprentice Sairyn Fawke.
5 Affray (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Will Clarken trained gelding who resumed at this track/distance three weeks back where he got a mile off them in the run and never really looked likely but his effort was more than sound behind Battlecamp. Slight concern is that he is looking for 1400m, but still, I have to include him.
2 Tycoon Queen (Bet Now: $18.00) was a notable drifter in betting when resuming over 1000m here three weeks back and while she didn’t win, I thought she was better than what the market had her behind the heavily backed Mile High. Has a really good second up record, loves racing here and up to 1250m is a big tick.
Race 9. (17:36) The Junction Handicap (64) 1400m
Going to take a chance on 2 Silent Warrior (Bet Now: $5.50), a stayer that resumes for the Stuart Gower team. This gelding hasn’t raced since November 11 over the 1950m when winning, aided by am absolute peach from Jason Holder. Best form is over that trip, but he can sprint well fresh, and this isn’t an overly strong race.
4 Simpatico (Bet Now: $12.00) was pegged down as just a horse who saved his best for Murray Bridge but that all changed a fortnight back with a superb win at this track/distance when fending them off and fighting hard to get a narrow win. Bit more depth here, but he’s flying at the moment and it’s hard to ignore him.
11 Betalyk (Bet Now: $3.70) is a Will Clarken trained mare who is on the quick back up after racing at Morphettville last Saturday where she got a mile back off the pace but worked home with real purpose I thought behind Regal Spur. Think the rise to 1400m is ideal for her and she gets the claim thanks to young Kersley.
