A bumper ten race card has been set down for Doomben this Saturday, with large fields the order of the day thanks to the wet weather from last week calling off the last four races. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:57) Coca Cola Handicap 2200m
2 Get On The Grange (Bet Now: $2.25) does look the one to beat. Allan Kehoe trained stayer who has been racing very well recently in Sydney behind some quality types, including Dreamforce, who looks blacktype class for sure, along with the in form Emperor’s Way. Finally gets out to an ideal and gets D Browne. Happy to be in his corner.
5 Ingeegoodbe (Bet Now: $4.80) ran third in the Outraged race at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago and to his credit, he tried really hard to run om but just lacked the class of the first two. Should get a really good run in transit here, and with luck in running, he can turn the tables without surprising. Winning threat.
3 Morendi (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Darren Graham trained stayer who is getting near a win and I think he will go very close here. Ran over 2400m at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back and chased hard all the way when second to impressive winner Outraged. I think he can turn the table here and that is one of the stronger form references.
Race 2. (13:32) Cascade Plate (Class 3) 1050m
6 Whycatchim (Bet Now: $3.00) is a former Victorian who had his first run for the Ben Currie team over the 870m on his home track and he absolutely bolted in under Beau Appo, leading throughout and running very sharp time, with a sub 33 for the final 600m. He can only improve off that and the stable when coming to town should always be respected.
I think on potential, 8 Lifesaver (Bet Now: $7.50) is the best horse in the race, but gee the wide gate makes things tough. Ran three times last prep and was pretty solid every start without winning, but he did contest some handy races. Whatever he does here, he will improve on, but if they go silly in front, he’s the one to beat.
I think last start for 2 Knotted (Bet Now: $11.00). they have may have found a new dynamic to him. Normally he is a horse who loves being on speed and running along, but last time out at Ballian, he got out the back near last in the run before peeling wide and gee he let down with a brilliant finishing burst. Not sure he can win, but a must for exotics with a repeat effort, and now with the senior jock on.
Race 3. (14:07) Jim Beam Handicap 1200m
4 Plumaro (Bet Now: $1.70) is the horse on everybody’s lips and you’d have to say rightfully so after what she did on debut at Toowoomba where she won by nearly ten lengths. Admittedly, the time was pretty plain but she beat what was in front of her with absolute ease. Clearly more depth here, but hard to ignore her.
9 Lashoni (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Shamus Award filly on debut for the Tony Gollan camp. This girl has had two public barrier trials to prepare for her debut and to my eye has been quite impressive every time she has stepped out. Looks a ready mate youngster and a win over Plumaro wouldn’t surprise, especially from the gate.
8 Havilland Miss (Bet Now: $51.00) is a Sizzling filly having her first start, this girl trained by Tony Gollan. She had one trial back in September before being tipped out, but has had two trials this prep to get her ready for the debut, so she’s had a good grounding for her first day at the races. Definite one for exotics. Havilland Miss
Race 4. (14:42) Canadian Club Handicap 1200m
3 Umberto (Bet Now: $3.90) looks the way to go to my eye. Not A Single Doubt gelding for the Tony Gollan camp who resumed over the 1000m at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back and worked home with real purpose late to run a close up second to Sista Act. 1200m at Doomben looks ideal and he draws to sit much closer in the run.
1 Snitz (Bet Now: $3.30) is a talented three year old that resumes for the Matty Dunn yard. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Spring where he put together a couple of outstanding wins over the 1350m here and both times he was dominant. January 19 trial at Ballina behind stablemate Hanwritten was very good and he can sprint well fresh.
5 Jinx ‘N’ Drinx (Bet Now: $26.00) is a Falvelon filly for the John Phelan camp at Deagon who has been learning her craft everywhere it seems but gee she is racing well. Won over the mile here two back before racing at Beaudesert on Australia Day where she bolted up under Jackson Morris. That was her first run in over two months so she should have upside.
Race 5. (15:17) Mt Franklin Handicap 1615m
5 Another Dollar (Bet Now: $4.40) for me. This daughter of Ocean Park has had two career outings for Chris Waller, debuting with a strong second over the 1350m here before going to the 1400m at the Gold Coast a fortnight back where she absolutely bolted in under Glen Colless and made a mess of them. Looks very promising and I think she’ll eat up the mile.
1 Pinch Passion (Bet Now: $4.00) hadn’t really done much this prep prior to racing over the Sunny Coast mile on January 27 where he was given a sweet ride by Ron Stewart and the ride really deserved the win but he couldn’t hold out Bold Assassin. Now he has that mile run under the belt, he’ll be better off and rates highly.
3 Bold Assassin (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Garnett Taylor trained gelding who is a beauty for the stable and connections because he rarely runs a bad race. He ran over the mile at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago and let down hard from the back to grab them and get the win in the last few strides. Not sure Doomben is his track, but hard to ignore last start.
Race 6. (15:57) Makers Mark Handicap 1350m
6 Bidii Babe (Bet Now: $4.40) is a beauty for the Rob Heathcoate team who should take some beating here. This mare was long odds when contesting the Sunny Coast Cup last time out but despite that she ran very well in defeat I thought when second to Most Important. That surely reads the best of the form references for this event.
4 I’m A Rippa (Bet Now: $3.00) hasn’t raced for four weeks since being heavily backed to win the Magic Millions QTIS at the Gold Coast and the plonk was landed with an all the way win with some help from a lovely ride on speed from Jim Byrne. Has a very good fresh record so the break between runs is no issue, and he loves Doomben.
1 Honey Toast (Bet Now: $11.00) is the unknown here. Very good stayer that resumes for the Ben Currie team after around 18 months away from the track. Hasn’t raced since running fifth to Real Love in the Premiers Cup in 2016. That form obviously went on to be franked with Real Love running a beauty in the Caulfield Cup that year. I’m sure this horse has had a jump out or two to prepare, and they get Lloyd first up. Bit of market support also, so a big watch.
Race 7. (16:37) Sprite Handicap (70) 1200m
Pretty keen on 10 Dream Master (Bet Now: $3.20). Toby Edmonds trained son of Dream Ahead who is two for two this time in, the latest coming at this track/distance on Australia Day when absolutely bolting in when leading throughout under Jeff Lloyd. Clearly more depth here, but he has the right racing pattern and being third up, he should be at peak fitness.
13 Jadentom (Bet Now: $4.60) is a quality mare for the Lindsay Hatch team who was heavily backed when racing over the 1000m at the Sunny Coast last time out and aided by an aggressive steer on speed from Brad Stewart, her class kicked in and she proved far too good for her rivals. 1200m looks ideal for her and is proven in town.
18 Aderito (Bet Now: $31.00) is a handy gelding that is first up for the Kelly Schweida team. This bloke hasn’t raced since mid September over 1050m here when down the track behind Girl In A Million. 1200m fresh tells me he’s wound up to run well and that appears to be the case off the two trials. Definite knockout chance.
Race 8. (17:17) Coke Zero Handicap (75) 1615m
7 Rosie Posie (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Matt Kropp trained mare who ran over the 1350m here a fortnight back and gee she was unlucky not to win the race getting badly held up at a vital stage when fourth to Desmon’s Pride. Think she’ll love the rise to the mile, has enormous upside and gets the claim. Happy to be with her each way.
Going to include 6 Stanley (Bet Now: $15.00). Michael Costa trains this galloper, who will be better suited over further, but this isn’t an overly strong race. He resumed over 1400m on his home track at the Gold Coast a fortnight back and just ran out of condition when a close up last of five. Lovs Doomben, is a second up winner and draws well.
Look out for an improved showing from 3 Saga Miss (Bet Now: $46.00). She ran over the 1350m at Ipswich last time out and while she never really looked like winning, I thought she stuck to the task really well in defeat behind a good one in Dreams Aplenty. I think she’d be much better suited on a bigger track, but I think she is a must for multiples.
Race 9. (17:55) Cascade Plate (Class 3) 1350m
2 Last Armageddon (Bet Now: $19.00) is a horse that is low flying at the moment for the Lindsay Hatch team. He last raced on January 14 over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast where he looked a good thing on paper and that is how it panned out with Stewart riding him aggressively and duly saluting. Should get a lovely run and prove hard to hold out.
11 Brigadoon Rise (Bet Now: $3.10) is three weeks between runs for the Tony Gollan camo since racing over 1200m here where he had a lovely sit off the pace and tried hard but had to settle for a narrow second to the in form Quick Ketch. Was 1350m back to 1200m that day so I think back up in trip and again with a soft draw, he’ll take some beating.
4 Mustarrid (Bet Now: $20.00) a definite threat for mine. Stayer that resumed on his home track at Toowoomba for Ben Currie a tick over two weeks back where I thought he stuck on well in defeat behind stablemate Kuttuamurra Al. He can pull out a decent run second, this isn’t a strong race and at the each way odds, I’m happy to speck.
Race 10. (18:30) Canadian Club Plate (Class 6) 1200m
14 Of The Day (Bet Now: $5.50) had been solid in three runs at blacktype level to kick off the prep before facing her D-Day here three weeks back. Had to win and she did, bursting through the gaps later under Fradd to win impressively. Not sure she is blacktype class, but at this level, she can definitely be effective. Sticking solid.
16 Inspired Estelle (Bet Now: $5.50) had been just okay in a couple of blacktype races for the Mares before Toby Edmonds dropped her to the midweeks over 1200m here a few Wednesdays back and the bets were landed with a strong win over the flying Scallopini. That does read well for this. Very effective at 1200m and so well in at the weights.
4 Hanwritten (Bet Now: $7.00) is a lightly raced son of Written Tycoon that resumes for the Matty Dunn stable. He hasn’t raced since early September over 1110m here when failing behind Mishani El Lobo. Been given a good break and has been tuned up with a couple of sharp trial wins. 1200m first up tells me he is wound up to go close fresh.
