The Cup Carnival at Flemington concludes this Saturday with a Group l double header, headlined by the VRC Sprint Classic (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:15) Melbourne's Own 3AW Trophy (96) 1600m
Hoping that 2 Al Passem (Bet Now: $4.25 FAT ODDS) can land on the bunny and prove hard to run down. Sat on speed in a pretty solidly run Sale Cup last time and gave a stack of cheek but was pipped on the peg when third to Doubt Defying. Is a winner at the track and if he can get to the lead and not do so much work, he’ll take beating.
3 Manuel (Bet Now: $3.30 FAT ODDS) has turned the corner I think since being allowed to roll along in front. Loved his win two back at Caulfield before racing here on Cup Day where he ran a gallant second to a good one in Fifty Stars. 1600m the query, but should get a lovely run near the speed and I like he’s on the back up.
4 Oncidium Ruler (Bet Now: $41.00 FAT ODDS) is a son of Strategic resuming for the Mick Kent stable. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Mornington Cup where he ran down the track behind Kings Will Dream. Can sprint well fresh, he likes Flemington and didn’t trial too bad to my eye behind Savanna Amour. Keen to see what he does.
$50 Suggested Bet: $20 Win All Passem/Manuel, $5 E/W Oncidium Ruler
Race 2. (12:50) Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Plate (90) 2000m
I’m all over 7 Danon Roman (Bet Now: $4.00 FAT ODDS) here to get the job done. He’s been a working progress for Anthony Freedman this prep, his first one in Australia, but has been very good. Latest run came over 2000m at Caulfield where he had an epic battle with Lucky For All but that horse just got the win. Confident he can turn the tables.
5 Lucky For All (Bet Now: $3.10 FAT ODDS) is a very good horse for Darren Weir but can do a bit wrong. In saying that, he was pretty gun barrel straight when winning at Caulfield over 2000m under a lovely steer from Ben Allen. I think he’ll eat up the Flemington 2000m and still has a stack of upside to come. Definite threat.
8 Pleasuring (Bet Now: $11.00 FAT ODDS) is a Darren Weir trained mare who I was really keen on when racing over the 2040m on Manikato night and I thought on face value she was disappointing. Lane gave her every chance but just found Nettoyer too good. Perhaps the bigger track and weight relief helps her cause. Don’t think she can win but can run in the first four.
$50 Suggested Bet: $50 Win on Danon Roman at $3.70
Race 3. (13:30) VRC Springtime Stakes 1400m
6 Ringerdingding (Bet Now: $3.90 FAT ODDS) is a Darren Weir trained colt who has to be seriously respected. He was the run of the day on Cox Plate Day when savaging the line out wide from last to run third to Charge. He was 1400-1200 that afternoon so back up to 1400m and should get clear air/cover from the draw. Definite threat.
4 Yulong January (Bet Now: $4.25 FAT ODDS) is an absolute beauty for the Maher/Eustace team. Hasn’t raced since the Gothic at Caulfield where he copped pressure in front from the riderless and for mine did a good job in defeat when beaten narrowly by Ranier, and we know that form stood up in the Carbine Club. Probably leads this field and will take some beating.
7 Signore Fox (Bet Now: $21.00 FAT ODDS) is a Snowden trained colt who put together a couple of sharp wins prior to racing in the Gothic at Caulfield where he was back and wide in a forgive run for mine behind Ranier, and we know that form has been franked. Should get good cover from the draw and can easily bounce back.
$50 Suggested Bet: $25 Win Ringerdingding/Yulong January
Race 4. (14:10) DeRucci Chatham Stakes 1400m
1 Widgee Turf (Bet Now: $6.00 FAT ODDS) on top for me. This bloke has been an absolute beauty for the Patrick Payne team and it’s hard to get away from him. Ran in the VOBIS Gold Star on Manikato night where he ran a game second to Iconoclasm. Back to 1400m looks perfect, should get a sweet trip and prove hard to beat.
4 Dreamforce (Bet Now: $8.00 FAT ODDS) has to be respected. Thought he was solid enough down the straight here first up behind I Am Excited before going to the Moonga where he copped pressure on speed in a brutally run race and did a great job in defeat behind Sirrconi. Is a third up winner…just wants the track to be firm.
10 Spectroscope (Bet Now: $19.00 FAT ODDS) is a James Cummings trained gelding who had trialled up well prior to resuming over 1400m at Randwick a fortnight back where he settled near the speed and tried very hard but just lacked the killer punch first up when beaten narrowly by Torgersen. Really good second up record and William Buick takes the steer.
$50 Suggested Bet: $25 E/W Widgee Turf
Race 5. (14:50) Queen Elizabeth Stakes 1600m
6 Casterton (Bet Now: $12.00) for me. Former French galloper for Chris Waller who had his first run for the stable in the Geelong Cup and given the bias that day, especially when the Cup was run, was for on speed horses, so he did a good job from the back to get as close as he did. Bigger track, fitter, extra trip and has really good overseas form.
7 Jaameh (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained galloper who tried to get into the Cup by winning the Lexus but he just didn’t have the ping to go with them but was still game in defeat when third to A Prince Of Arran, who ran a beauty in the Cup. That form reads so well and provided he handles the back up, one of the hardest to beat.
1 Libran (Bet Now: $7.00) is a quality stayer for Chris Waller who wasn’t far off gaining a start in the Cup but instead runs here. His Moonee Valley Cup run was full of merit I thought, closing off strongly to run third to Ventura Storm. He’s had a ripping prep but yet to win. I think he gets a great chance to get that win.
$50 Suggested Bet: $50 Boxed Trifecta 1-6-7-11-12
Race 6. (15:30) Matriarch Stakes 2000m
2 Savvy Coup (Bet Now: $8.00) is a classy mare who should love getting back to this level. Probably a bridge too far last time in the Cox Plate and it wasn’t helped by the fact she pulled her head off. Star Kiwi back home and a proper Group l horse. Has the Lucia Valentina feel about it. Class to come to the fore.
11 Temple Of Bel (Bet Now: $6.00) is flying for Tony McEvoy and she should love the rise to 2000m. Ran in the Empire Rose last Saturday where she just got too far back in the run but had to love the way she found the line behind Shillelagh. She’s crying out for a trip, which she gets here, she’s hard fit now and in form.
This race will tell us if 3 Luvaluva (Bet Now: $27.00) is a contender or pretender. She looked to be ticking over nicely but she ran such an awful race in the Craven Plate, but clearly had excuses with the mare seemingly struggling on the bog. Back on firmer footing here, she’s certainly got the class to win. Has she got the desire?
$50 Suggested Bet: $50 Boxed Trifecta 2-3-9-11-12
Race 7. (16:10) VRC Sprint Classic 1200m
Sticking with class and the proven form in 1 Redzel (Bet Now: $3.90). To an extent, he was handed the Everest on a platter. But it was a very testing track and he still had to get the job done, which he did in emphatic fashion. Tick over trial win was outstanding and he is a beast when racing down the straight, as we saw last year when winning the race.
If 7 Kementari (Bet Now: $6.50) can handle the straight track, he’ll take beating. His run in the Manikato was the run of the night for mine. Given the way the track played, he had no right to get as close as he did yet in another 50m, he would have won. I think James Cummings, hopefully, has figured out he’s a 1200-1400 horse. Extremely hard to beat off the Manikato effort.
It would be in the discussion of all time great training efforts if the Hayes/Dabernig team can get 4 Redkirk Warrior (Bet Now: $13.00) to win this first up. Hasn’t raced since a campaign in the UK where he did Australia proud on the world stage. Back down under and gee he looked sharp in a recent jump out, and we know he saves his best for the straight.
$50 Suggested Bet: $50 Win Redzel
Race 8. (16:55) Mackinnon Stakes 2000m
I’m hot on 7 Latrobe (Bet Now: $5.50). Was hot on him for the Melbourne Cup but the stable said he wasn’t ready for the two miles and instead runs here. He has A1 European form and he’ll be strong at the end of a likely hard 2000m. That, and from all reports, he’s working the house down and Team Williams are beaming with confidence.
3 Blair House (Bet Now: $2.00) is the favourite and a deserving one off form, but could I get him as short as he is? No. He hasn’t raced since the Caulfield Stakes where he pushed Benbatl all the way in a thrilling finish, and we know what that horse did in the Cox Plate. A tough 2000m I have a little niggle on, but he’s got class and the form.
9 Extra Brut (Bet Now: $9.50) well and truly proved in the Derby that he’s a Flemington. Dreadful in the Caulfield Classic, I had put a line through him, but he was outstanding last Saturday under a beaut steer from Johnny Allen. Gets right down in the weights, back to 2000m no issue, hard fit, in form, he certainly appeals.
$50 Suggested Bet: $50 Boxed Trifecta 3-7-8-9
Race 9. (17:45) Grand Handicap (80) 1100m
9 Eurack (Bet Now: $4.50) on top in the get out. She’ll be popular in the last given she’s unbeaten and draws wide, and I think that’ll be the right part of the track. Formerly with Nathan McPherson but is now with the Vidotto/Beasey team. Form around her reads well, she has good gate speed and has shown grit in the past.
11 Order Of Command (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Danny O’Brien trained four year old resuming. This son of Squamosa hasn’t raced since late July when racing down the straight here and running a solid second to Brave Song. Trialled up very well behind Divine Quality and we saw what that mare did last Saturday.
It’s hard to get away from 7 Lagerfeld (Bet Now: $9.00) and what he’s done this time in. Been up forever it seems but gee he continues to race well and has been placed superbly by the Maher/Eustace stable. Loved the way he went about it last time out at Echuca, heavily backed and bolting up on speed. Greatest test to date, but hopefully they let him run and use his best asset- speed.
$50 Suggested Bet: $25 E/W Eurack
