The Everest Carnival at Randwick continues this Saturday with more Group l racing the main event. The Spring Champion (2000m) has assembled a quality field with several winning hopes. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres from the 1600m-Winning Post; Out four metres for the remainder.

Race 1. (13:10) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1600m
Fitter and up in trip, can make a case for 6 Rent A Rock (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS). I’d be very forgiving of his run at Goulburn last time out in what looked like was a barrier trial for him. He was just under three weeks between runs, 1800m back to 1300m and was ridden stone cold to last and found the line well. Eats up the Randwick mile here and this looks a real target race.
10 Tempel One (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) is a nice horse for Paul Messara. Impressive first up win at Scone before going to a Rosehill Highway two weeks ago where he was caught wide for the trip and the effort told late behind Scarleo. He’s a nice horse and ability wise, in time he’ll be the best horse from this race. Hopefully better luck goes his way.
Knockout chance here is 1 Perfect Illusion (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) for Mitch Beer. This six year old resumed in an open handicap over the mile at Kembla, somewhat outclassed on paper it would have appeared, but he ran a beauty in defeat when third to Get The Idea, who does look city class. If he brings that effort here, with a hint of improvement fitness wise, he’ll just about win.
Race 2. (13:45) Roman Consul Stakes 1200m
1 Wild Ruler (Bet Now: $1.95 TOP ODDS) is a Team Snowden trained three year old who like a few others here is on trial for a crack at the Coolmore on Derby Day. Heavily backed when resuming in the Heritage and under a lovely steer from J Mac, class got him home and he was too good. Harder here, but he looks to have improvement to come and potentially leads for fun.
I’m wary of 2 Doubtland (Bet Now: $2.25 TOP ODDS) for Team Hawkes. He is getting ready for the Coolmore Stud after winning down the Flemington straight last time out in the Danehill. Form out of that race is a bit suspect but he has looked the part since day one and he’ll provide good competition for the Slipper. Serious winning chance.
If this does become a sit/sprint, 4 On The Lead (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) has the turn of foot that can cause trouble at a price. He was far from disgraced behind Doubtland in the Danehill. Returns home off the back of a tick over trial and if he can get the drop on the front pair and use his turn of foot, he’s a knockout chance.
Race 3. (14:20) Drinkwise (bm88) 1400m
Hard to ignore 9 Criaderas (Bet Now: $2.15 TOP ODDS). His run was enormous over 1400m here three weeks ago. Bowman didn’t give him much hope with the ride but his finale was outstanding, clocking some of the best late splits of the meeting. A half decent steer here and I think he’ll win and confirm himself a potentially worthy Golden Eagle candidate.
1 Bottega (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) needs to win this to give himself the best chance of getting into the Golden Eagle field. It was hard to miss his effort when resuming at Rosehill two weeks ago. Should have won, but had no luck at a vital stage off a slow speed when beaten a lip by Prime Candidate. Any hint of improvement and think he wins.
3 Tricky Gal (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) lacks the class of some of these, but she’s a winner and knows where the post is having won six of her 12 starts, including a dominant first up win at Canterbury from the back, clocking some of the best late splits of the meeting. McEvoy is 2/2 aboard her and she maps to get a perfect run in transit.
Race 4. (14:55) Tresemme (bm78) 2000m
8 She’s Ideel (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is bursting to win a race and I think she gets a golden chance here. All three runs back from a spell have been pretty good, but she’s just got too far back in the run each time and leaving herself with a too big of a task. Now up to 2000m, hard fit, the speed should be genuine and she’ll get her chance to finish over the top.
4 Badoosh (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is flying for Matty Dunn and I think he can win again. Ran over 1800m on the Kenso track last Wednesday and under a confident steer from Bowman, he made a mess of them in beautiful placement given the start prior, he won a Saturday race. Up to 2000m looks fine and the way he’s going, hard to ignore him.
I’ve always had time for 9 Get The Idea (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) and I think he can graduate to Saturday company and run well here. John Sargent trained gelding that has won his past two, the latest over the mile at Kembla where he had to really knuckle down and chase, which he did and got up on the peg to win. Loves the rise to 2000m and is a leading chance.
Race 5. (15:30) Stan Fox Stakes 1500m
5 Jet Propulsion (Bet Now: $3.90) for me. Maher/Eustace trained three year old that is a month between runs since contesting the Dulcify where he was part of a strong tempo throughout and was entitled to chuck it away, but kept finding and was really game in defeat behind Mo’unga. He’s the different form and has fresh legs whereas these favourites have had gutbusters right throughout the prep.
I think you have to give 2 Peltzer (Bet Now: $2.90) one more chance. He is the class of the field but how is his confidence? Was sky high prior to the start of the prep but has his heart been broken in three races where they have been gut busters due to hectic tempos? Banking on the stable getting him right and if he’s right, he’s too good for these.
3 Prime Star (Bet Now: $3.70) has been really well placed by the Freedman camp and I think is a live threat here. He wasn’t quite up to the A graders of the Golden Rose so the stable took him back to benchmark company and he’s been really good, his latest run a closing second to Athiri three weeks ago, who won last Saturday to frank the form. He’ll like the rise in trip, back to his own age…can see him winning this.
Race 6. (16:10) The Silver Eagle 1300m
1 Alligator Blood (Bet Now: $1.90) can make a statement here for the Golden Eagle. He resumed four weeks ago at Doomben and even though he was beaten, he was very good in defeat given he lumped 61kg and was a fair way back off a slow speed set by eventual winner The Odyssey, and considering it ran 33.22 for the last 600m, Alligator Blood would have to run 32.5/thereabouts, which is near impossible. Fitter, up to 1300m, hard to beat I feel.
Fascinating runner is 3 Dawn Passage (Bet Now: $5.00), a talented animal for the WaterBott team that resumes. He hasn’t been seen since being a beaten favourite in the Stradbroke, but far from disgraced in defeat. Two trials leading in have been strong and his work between races last Wednesday with Farnan was more than encouraging.
9 Icebath (Bet Now: $16.00) has done little wrong this time in for the Brad Widdup stable but she just can’t quite crack it for a win. Thought it would come three weeks ago here but she couldn’t finish it off and had to settle for a narrow second to Academy. She’s going well and deserving of a win. Not sure it’s here but one for multiples.
Race 7. (16:50) Spring Champion Stakes 2000m
13 Montefilia (Bet Now: $3.00) is the fresh blood and she looks like she will eat up the 2000m. Love horses that step up in trip off a fast run race and that is exactly what she’s doing after winning the Flight Stakes last Saturday in what was pretty much survival of the fittest. The overall depth here is thin and she’s the class given she’s a Group l winner. She’ll do me.
3 Love Tap (Bet Now: $4.00) is very progressive for the Freedman camp. Unbeaten in three career outings, the latest coming in the traditional lead up when winning the Gloaming, leading throughout under a confident steer from Nash. Think he’ll be better with a bunny to chase and if that eventuates, he’ll take some beating.
If Love Tap does opt to take a sit, then a horse like 4 Street Dancer (Bet Now: $41.00) could get control in front and we saw two back when gets an uncontested lead, he’s a hard horse to get past. Gloaming run was full of merit and he’s racing like 2000m will be okay. If he can find the front here and get a cheap furlong or two, he’ll run a mighty race.
Race 8. (17:30) Angst Stakes 1600m
I can’t believe 10 Scarlet Dream (Bet Now: $9.50) is $15+. She was outstanding in defeat first up in the Shannon when taking on the boys and worked home very strongly off a moderate speed when fourth to I Am Superman. Now back to Mares grade, fitter, up to the mile, if she can take advantage of the gate, gee I think she’ll run a big race at odds.
2 Positive Peace (Bet Now: $6.00) is a key chance. Paul Perry trained mare who looks to be sneaky flying. Thought she was a pass mark fresh in the Sheraco before going to the Golden Pendant and gee she should have gone close to winning. No luck at all in the straight when seemingly bolting behind them. Fitter, up to the mile on the bigger track, keen on her running well.
1 Shout The Bar (Bet Now: $11.00) looks to be back on track for the WaterBott team. Too bad to be true fresh in the Sheraco but bounced back to positive form in the Golden Pendant when on speed and battling away really well behind Subpoenaed. Fitter now and getting up to a more suitable trip, she can take control here and prove hard to run down.
Race 9. (18:05) Antler Luggage Sprint (bm78) 1000m
Looks a lovely race for 5 Human Nature (Bet Now: $4.40). Team Hawkes trained gelding that resumed over 955m at the Valley and I thought he was very good in defeat behind a Stakes winner in waiting, Alfa Oro. Back onto a bigger track, up in trip, fitter, firmer footing…it’s hard to find a negative. One of the better bets on the card.
11 Plaquette (Bet Now: $6.00) has her share of talent. James Cummings trained mare that has been kept on ice since a sharp resumption when winning on the Kenso track, smashing the clock in her late splits relative to the meeting. Tick over trial was very good and she does seem a horse that races best when she has fresh legs.
6 Mr Mosaic (Bet Now: $5.50) is suited back to 1000m and I’ll go his way, just. Bolted up fresh at this trip at Warwick Farm before going to 1100m at Canterbury where the pressure was applied to him in front but he beat the challengers off and looked home, only to be nabbed late by Chat. Back to 1000m, jump and run, hopefully holding on.
