Eight races will be run and won at Morphettville Parks this Saturday, with the Australia vs Ireland Jumps Series being the highlight alongside the Penny Edition Stakes (1400m). The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out six metres from the 1000m-Winning Post; Four metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:16) Syd McDonald Senior Memorial Handicap (70) 1250m
Not much of a race so I’ll go with hard race fitness, which lies with 5 Riverina Dancer (Bet Now: $14.00). Pulled up with excuses two back behind Leonardo Da Hinchi before racing on the Pakenham Synthetic where she was game in defeat against the older horses behind Toorak Miss. Has placed on heavy before, so the wet track no issue and always have to respect the stable when they bring them over.
4 No More Bids (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Mick Price trained son of Not A Single Doubt who was good on debut behind impressive winner Doroza before leading throughout last time under a lovely steer from Michael Walker. Looks to be a bit of speed here, so hopefully Tourneur can get the suck run just off the pace. Key threat.
1 Dancer’s Kin (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Phillip Stokes trained filly who was the second pick in betting when resuming a fortnight back where she tried hard but the class of Thine Is The Power kicked in and this girl couldn’t go. Something similar may occur again but does have ability and is trained here so she has to be respected.
Race 2. (13:51) Australia v Ireland Steeple 3200m
3 Caroun (Bet Now: $4.50) is an absolute swimmer and he got conditions to suit last time in a steeple at Ballarat. He was bolting in the run and on the turn, you only wanted to be on one horse. Just needed to jump cleanly and he did. Not quite as effective on firmer footing, so he’d need a bog to be winning definitively, but can run well regardless.
2 Sir Lopez (Bet Now: $1.40) does look better than these but I’m happy to risk him given he’ll likely be a short quote. He has turned his hand to jumping this time in and for the most part has been quite good, the latest effort seeing him win a hurdle here a fortnight back, wearing down Killarney Kid. Jumping the steeples for the first time now but flat speed wise, he’s got these covered. Did trial terribly over the steeples prior to last start.
5 Darebin (Bet Now: $21.00) is an Eric Musgrove trained jumper who comes through a Murray Bridge steeple where he had a lovely sit near the speed and was looking to build momentum when getting held up on the home turn. He got out in time and had his chance to win but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to stablemate Urban Explorer. He can win without surprising.
Race 3. (14:26) Soul Growers Wines Handicap (82) 2250m
I don’t mind 8 Mr Sheridan (Bet Now: $3.60). Darren Weir trains this bloke, who formerly raced in New Zealand but has had a couple of runs here, the latest seeing him win over 2100m at Swan Hill. It was a real grinding effort but I liked the last 50m and through the line. He ran through it strongly so 2250m no issue and has upside.
2 The Statesman (Bet Now: $2.20) is a Darren Weir trained import who was given a sweet ride to win last time out at Flemington over 2000m. Hit the front perhaps a touch early and was there to be run down but showed pretty good fight late when challenged. Haripour ticked that form at Cranbourne and I think he’ll be fine with the extra trip.
10 Exalted Craftsman (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Grant Young stayer who has been in near career best form at the moment. Strung together a couple of sharp wins prior to racing over 2400m here three weeks ago where he was given a sweet steer by Raquel Clark and hit the front for a brief moment but just whacked away late when third to Mini Melo. Hard fit, down in the weights and in form.
Race 4. (15:01) Australia v Ireland Hurdle 3200m
Happy to butter up on 5 Romelo (Bet Now: $2.60). Been a fan of this horse since joining the Eric Musgrove team. Won the maiden hurdle two back at Warrnambool before going to Ballarat where he jumped a bit sluggish towards the end and plugged away to run third to Blood And Sand. That form does read well for this and will be hard fit after racing at Sandown on Wednesday where he was far from disgraced behind Street Spun.
1 Zentangle (Bet Now: $2.00) would win this if he brought his best form. Just depends if he will or not. His three runs this time in for Patrick Payne have been mixed, his latest effort at Ballarat being terrible when a heavily backed odds on pop. He was under pressure a long way out and failed to jump the last. He’s hit and miss, but at his best, he’ll be too good.
2 Tunes (Bet Now: $7.50) is an absolute iron horse for Grant Young who has been in work forever it seems. He comes through a 4000m hurdle at Ballarat where he was on speed throughout but that trip on that testing track was just too much for him and he was eased out of the race with a couple to jump. Back on firmer footing, back in trip, back in depth, he can bounce back.
Race 5. (15:41) Mypunter.com Handicap (75) 1000m
Happy to give 10 Won Ball (Bet Now: $5.00) another chance. Darren Weir trains this gelding, who was hard in the market when resuming over 1000m at Sandown and after getting the sweet trip, it looked no Betting, but he couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Parwan Prince. Hopefully with the run under the belt, he will be better off.
4 All About Nicci (Bet Now: $9.00) is Kym Hann trained mare who is in near career best form at the moment. Produced a lovely finale to win at this track/distance two back before being given a three week freshen up and repeating the dose. Bit more depth this time around but have to like the way she’s going about it.
9 Celtic Blast (Bet Now: $14.00) is a real speed demon for the O’Shea/Downing team who will be in front provided he jumps. Didn’t jump last time at Murray Bridge but had the speed to be right up there before taking the lead early on in the straight and safely holding rivals. Harder here, but deserves a crack in town.
Race 6. (16:21) Stuart Glenn's 60th Birthday Handicap (75) 1250m
1 Edgewood (Bet Now: $21.00) is a John Macmillan trained gelding who was nearly a year between runs when resuming at Caulfield a fortnight back but despite starting near $101, he ran a beauty I thought, closing off with purpose to run fifth to Bryan. Just has to repeat that effort and he has to go close to winning this.
10 Smokin’ Bella (Bet Now: $20.00) is a talented mare for the Maher/Eustace team who can definitely win this if she bounces back to something near her best form. Lumped 61kg last time at Sale and couldn’t dash with the impost when down the track behind Bettyrae Ruby. Gets really good weight relief and this is a winnable race.
4 Miss Identified (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Travis Doudle mare who is resuming. She hasn’t raced since April 28 over 1400m here when running midfield behind the above average McEvoy mare Set To Sparkle, who would be odds on to beat this field. Can sprint well fresh. Interesting there are no trials. Watch the market.
Race 7. (17:01) Penny Edition Stakes 1400m
2 Danon Liberty (Bet Now: $12.00) for me. On first look, his PB Lawrence effort behind Showtime was disappointing but he didn’t pull up 100% post race and Darren Weir hasn’t put the line through him. Used a similar path with Gailo Chop last year before that horse went on to Group l glory. Perhaps something similar will eventuate.
4 Poetic Dream (Bet Now: $7.50) gets another chance for mine. Was really keen on him when he resumed in the Aurie’s Star at Flemington and despite getting a relatively good run near the speed, he weakened out of it late to finish down the track behind Voodoo Lad. He’s trialled too well to dismiss…yet. But this run is near enough to D-Day for him.
7 Exalted Adam (Bet Now: $17.00) has been up an absolute eternity it seems for the Grant Young stable but gee he just keeps racing well. He comes through the Spring Stakes where he got slightly held up in the straight but for the most part he seemed to have his chance for mine. Query at 1400m but he tends to save his best for the Parks track.
Race 8. (17:40) Quayclean Handicap (70) 1400m
12 Tan Tat Trusting (Bet Now: $5.50) on top in the get out. He comes through a 1700m race at Flemington three weeks back where he sat on speed throughout and looked to travel well in the run but just couldn’t quite see it out at that level when fifth to Sikindarabad. Back to this level, and with cover, he can be more effective.
5 Moghul Empire (Bet Now: $3.40) is a very good galloper for Will Clarken who was backed off the map when resuming on the course proper a fortnight back where he sat wide throughout and looked gone early on in the straight but he lifted hard late under Jamie Kah and his class got him home. Can only see upside and he could easily win races in Melbourne.
8 Diapason (Bet Now: $10.00) is a former Chris Waller trained mare who had her first run for Will Clarken a fortnight back over 1200m on the course proper where she got off the pace and tried hard but couldn’t produce the necessary finale to win when down the track behind the heavily backed Arties Dreamwinner. Up to 1400m should suit and is a must for exotics.
