A bumper nine event meeting has been assembled for Caulfield on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.
Manfred Stakes π: View the Field for the Manfred Stakes
Race 1. (12:35) IVE > Print Handicap 1600m
Back up to 1600m is a big tick for the Danny O’Brien trained 4 Thousand Wishes (Bet Now: $2.10 TOP ODDS). Gritty winner over the mile at Flemington two back before coming back to 1400m and that probably beat her in the end when a narrow second to Power Dream. Form out of that has been quite good and up in trip again, she’s a leading chance.
1 Kardashing (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) does look the leader and will give a sight for a long way I’m sure. Ran over 1700m at Flemington two weeks ago when controlling things from the front and giving a really good kick but didn’t have the turn of foot to go with Red Heeler late. Back to the mile, should lead and prove hard to run down.
5 Necessary (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is a bit hit and miss but if she brings her best, she’s in the mix for sure. Big win first up at Echuca before running a howler here behind Saucy Jack. Then went back home to Cranbourne and bounced back to her best with a dominant win. She’s showed city class talent. Hopefully she can produce in town.
Race 2. (13:10) John Moule Handicap 1600m
5 Hi Stranger (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is a better horse at Flemington compared to Caulfield, but he’s going super for Shane Fliedner. Ran third to Rubisaki at Flemington three weeks back and really liked the way he found the line late in the piece. He does race as if further will suit but when tested beyond 1400m, he’s struggled. Still in the mix off recent form.
Giving respect to 1 Cassius (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) for the Hayes/Dabernig team, who is several weeks between runs since scoring a win over the mile at the Valley in what I thought was a good performance. Sort of crabbed around the turn but once he balanced up, he was strong to the line and through it in winning. Break between runs, but looks a nice type and finds a winnable race.
7 Brazen Song (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) does lack the class of some of these, but she gets really good weight relief from last start and potentially can go forward. Ran over 1300m at Sandown last Wednesday where she settled off the speed and was never really a winning threat but did make up ground late, suggesting 1600m will be fine and tumbles down to 52kg after the claim.
Race 3. (13:45) All Star Mile March 14 Hcp 1407m
Hard fit now with upside and up in trip, am keen that 5 Rock On (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) runs well here. Ran over 2000m at Flemington three weeks ago where he paraded as if he may need the run just to clean him up, and he ran a beauty, closing off strongly to run a close up fourth to The Lord Mayor. Up to 2400m, he’ll take some beating.
4 High Bridge (Bet Now: $2.00 TOP ODDS) has been up a little while for Chris Waller but continues to race at a pretty high level. How he didn’t win the Bagot two back I still don’t know but he made amends with a strong win at Flemington over 2500m, helped by a lovely steer from Dwayne Dunn. Not sure what upside he has left, but just has to hold his form to be competitive.
2 Home By Midnight (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is ticking along beautifully for Patrick Payne and up in trip, he’ll be dangerous. Ran over 2000m here last Saturday and was in front a stride before and after the post, but on the line, the verdict went the way of Vaucluse Bay. Up in trip, fitter, he’ll go close. Just depends how the tempo will be.
Race 4. (14:20) Robert Hunter Handicap 1100m
I’m hoping they let 1 Our Luca (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) jump and run. Talented animal for Jerome Hunter that hasn’t raced since Pakenham Cup Day when down the track behind Snitzkraft. Been given a little freshen up and has tuned up for his return with a Mornington jumpout with the blinkers going on. Hopefully they let him jump and run.
5 Diamond Effort (Bet Now: $3.60 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Mossman for the Clinton McDonald camp that is resuming. This girl hasn’t raced since the Northwood Plume during the Spring here when down the track behind Tofane. Recent jumpout here was encouraging and first up last prep, she was excellent in defeat behind Pippie, which does read well for this.
6 Sagarra (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is on the quick back up for Robbie Griffiths after racing last Friday night at the Valley when doing work out wide without cover and couldn’t come on behind Mister Mogul. The speed should be genuine here, so he gets his chance to sit off it and be strong at the end, potentially at silly odds.
Race 5. (14:55) Chairman's Stakes 1000m
4 Castlecomer (Bet Now: $8.50) gets the nod for me. Chris Waller trains this Outreach, who debuted in the Maribyrnong Plate when green throughout and want to be forgiving of the outing behind Hard Landing. Has had two jumpouts in readiness for his return and have really liked the way he has gone about it. Happy to be in his corner.
3 Aryaaf (Bet Now: $2.80) is a deserving favourite for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Debuted with a strong win in the Ottawa on Melbourne Cup Day before being tipped out for a break. That form does read well with Muntaseera stamping herself as a serious Blue Diamond contender. Jumpout was good, draws well…just depends what the market does with her the last 10-15 minutes.
5 Rock Of Kryptonite (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Fastnet Rock colt for the Price/Kent who is resuming, having not raced since debuting in the Debutant here when on speed and tiring late behind Tanker, racing a bit green when under pressure. Been given a good break and has jumped out well leading in, plus stable is firing with their juveniles.
Race 6. (15:30) Mal Seccull Handicap 1800m
It was hard to miss the Australian debut for 4 Just Benjamin (Bet Now: $2.10) several weeks ago at Caulfield. He was heavily backed over the mile but had no early toe, getting back to near last, but despite being in restricted room, you had to like the way he attacked the line to run a close up fifth. He’ll be the hot horse fancied by everyone….just a query of whether he’s still sharp enough for 1800m, or does he want further.
Just how good is 2 Aktau (Bet Now: $2.70) for Michael Moroney. Similar to Just Benjamin in the sense there are eyes towards the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup, so a win here to boost the rating some more would be ideal. Outstanding Australian debut when winning over the mile at Flemington and showing good change up speed. Hard to beat.
6 Big Sur (Bet Now: $11.00) is going to win one soon. Doubt it’s here, but for multiples, I’d certainly be including him. Wasn’t too bad here first up behind Montenegro Man before going to Pakenham where he was a real eye catcher from the back behind Mellors. Like the booking of Williams…not backing him to win, but wouldn’t be a total shock if he did win.
Race 7. (16:10) Manfred Stakes 1200m
Great to see 2 Dalasan (Bet Now: $2.35) back at the races. He’s a star and should take a power of beating here first up despite his Grand Final/s being over the mile. Hasn’t raced since the Spring, where he was very brave in the Caulfield Guineas before a super win in the Carbine Club. Been given a good break and from all reports has trialled well leading in. If he’s anywhere near right, he wins.
1 Super Seth (Bet Now: $4.40) has the runs on the board against these given he’s a Group l winner having nailed Alligator Blood right on the peg to win the Caulfield Guineas. That was his last run and comes here off a recent jumpout which tells me he may need the run. But on the flip side, gate one and class may get him home.
Really keen to see 6 Spend (Bet Now: $4.40) back at the races. Team Hawkes trains this colt, who hasn’t raced since debuting with an electric win over 1100m at Rosehill back in July. Dodged the Spring with the Autumn in mind and really liked the way he closed off in a recent Flemington jumpout. Market will be the guide as to how he’s going.
Race 8. (16:50) W.J. Adams Stakes 1000m
14 Splintex (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Mark Newnham trained colt that was good in defeat two back in the Gosford Guineas before stepping back to 1000m at Randwick three weeks ago where he sat on what was a moderate tempo and showed good ticker when challenged by Aquitaine, fending off that mare to win. More depth here, and up to 1100m is a little question mark, but is hard to beat on current form.
Huge query here is 12 I Am Immortal (Bet Now: $14.00), a talented three year old for Anthony Freedman that is first up, having not raced since the early part of the Spring when down the track at Caulfield behind Garner, which of course went on with it subsequent, so that reads well. Recent jumpouts have been solid without being great, but he does have that racing pattern of putting himself on speed and sustaining it.
Giving respect to 7 Prezado (Bet Now: $23.00), who resumes for the Ellerton/Zahra camp. This guy hasn’t raced since the Winter down the straight where when a few lengths off some pretty decent horse flesh, namely The Inevitable and Assertive Approach. That clearly reads well for this, and he does tend to race well fresh. Loved his jumpout at Flemington, so happy to include him.
Race 9. (17:30) Catanach's Jewellers Hcp 1400m
10 Polanco (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Shea Eden trained four year old who is two weeks between runs after racing over 1400m at Flemington and really liked the way he finished his race off behind Reflectivity, beaten just under two lengths in a good effort. Think he’s a big track horse, so Caulfield is a little query, but hard to knock the recent effort.
6 Fabric (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Danny O’Brien trained mare that had just one jumpout prior to resuming over 1400m at Flemington two weeks ago and it was a definite pass mark behind Reflectivity, keeping in mind she was nearer the inside, which wasn’t the A1 ground for the meeting. Fitter, she really appeals here now she’s got a decent base of fitness.
What to do with 1 Ken’s Dream (Bet Now: $18.00)? If he brought his best, he would properly spank these, but it’s been a long time since he has produced that. Hasn’t raced since Boxing Day in the Lord Stakes when midfield behind Odeon. Back to 1400m I do like, as the severe drop in depth…just depends if he’s going any good. You’ll get a decent guide here.
