The Brisbane Summer Carnival continues this Saturday at Doomben where it is George Moore Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:57) Broncos Team Store Handicap (70) 1200m
Confident that 3 Unlikely Story (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) can measure up. Son of Star Witness for the Tony Gollan stable who was a hard fav when racing at the Ipswich midweeks last time and despite really being 100% happy around the tight track, he was far too good. Last time he ran here, he was two lengths off Winter Bride. That form reads well for this.
1 Good Time Charlie (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) is yet to win this time in but you get the feeling that a win isn’t far off. Ran over 1000m at the Sunny Coast three weeks ago and closed off well, but just missed out when second to Chapter And Verse. The 1200m is the query with him, but with a soft trip, I think he’ll get it.
9 Triple Arrow (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is a Heinrich/Rodgers trained gelding who is near a month between runs since winning at the Sunny Coast where he defied a little betting drift to score a narrow but impressive win. Harder here but has run well in town before and should get a really good run from the inside barrier.
Race 2. (14:32) National Storage Locker Room Handicap (90) 2000m
3 Estikhraaj (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) for me in a tough race. Lovely ride by Larry got him the win two back here before a not so good ride from Larry cost him dearly here a fortnight back when beaten narrowly by Stanley. He seems to be really enjoying life in the sunshine state and this race doesn’t look much harder.
6 Magnufighter (Bet Now: $3.30 TOP ODDS) is stepping up to the 2000m but ability wise, he probably has these covered. Has been excellent in two runs back from a break, the latest over the mile here a fortnight back when surging late but just missing out on the win when second to El Campedaor. Just has to tick the 2000m box.
1 Emphasis (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) looks to be ticking over really nicely for Richie Stephensen. This bloke ran in the El Campeador race mentioned above and I thought his effort was quite good. I liked the way he found the line after settling near last in the run. Getting out to a more ideal trip and does have a touch of class on his side.
Race 3. (15:12) Country Cup Final 1600m
13 Arms Race (Bet Now: $31.00) gets the nod. Trevor Rowe trains this son of Smart Missile, who comes to town off the back of a win at Innisfail back on October 20 where he won the Innisfail Cup. I think 1600m is well short of his best, but they’ll go hard in front here, so he’ll get his chance to finish off over the top.
4 Green Empire (Bet Now: $4.60) is probably the best of these when it comes to exposed TAB form. Nine year old for Tom Button from Rocky who ran over the mile at Roma last time where he got well off the pace but finished off with real purpose late to run second to Atouchmore in the Roma Cup. Back on the turf, he does appeal.
2 Blue Jest (Bet Now: $10.00) is an absolute beauty for the Bevan Johnson team. He won the Birdsville Cup earlier this year and since then has run well in town, including a run here behind Niccanova. He ran in the Roma Cup and was disappointing but at his best, he’s certainly capable of beating these. Can definitely bounce back.
Race 4. (15:48) Epicure Memorable Moments Handicap (85) 1200m
4 Natch (Bet Now: $3.50) for me. This bloke really came of age last time in for Tony Gollan, winning several races on the bounce, including a couple here. Got that residual fitness on his side, he’s a winner and he has the right racing pattern. Market will probably be the best guide, but on form, he’s the one for me.
12 Curdled (Bet Now: $4.20) has had a few homes but is now with Toby Edmonds. Was with Peter Robl at one stage, then Gerald Ryan, but calls the Gold Coast home. He has shown good talent since day one but hasn’t quite put it all together. That could well change if the recent trial is any guide. It was a beauty, winning it under little pressure.
1 Bergerac (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Steve Tregea trained gelding that resumes. He’s always been a little tease for punters, threatening to string together some wins but not quite getting the job done. Hasn’t raced since early September, but as we saw last week with this stable and their runners, he’ll be forward enough for a decent first up run.
Race 5. (16:28) Sizzling Plate 1050m
Hard not to be impressed by the Fastnet Rock gelding 1 Eleven Eleven (Bet Now: $2.80), who makes his debut here for Greg Hickman. This bloke has had two trials in Sydney leading up to his first start, the latest coming a couple of weeks back at Canterbury where he led all the way and bolted in under a hold from Jimmy Orman. Has gate speed, so should be near the front and proving a tough commodity.
3 Betaima (Bet Now: $5.00) is the pick of the raced brigade. She was off the map when attempting to lead all the way over 1000m at the Sunny Coast three weeks ago but just couldn’t quite fend off the challenge of Champagne Jet, who had the suck run behind and had last look. She’ll run along near the front and look the winner at some stage.
There has been early specking for 2 Ringside Lad (Bet Now: $27.00), a first starter for Liam Birchley, and whenever money comes for a horse from that stable, you always have to be on guard. Yet to be seen at the public trials, but breed usually comes to hand early, he draws a good gate and the stable have produced some decent youngsters so far this season. One to watch for sure.
Race 6. (17:08) Winning Rupert Plate 1200m
Great to see 2 The Fire Trap (Bet Now: $7.00) back at the races. He was a horse I had earmarked as a possible Spring horse, but they’ve kept him on ice for the Summer. He trialled last week at Doomben and the first half of the trial was ugly, but once he balanced up, he moved really nicely. If the fav is off his game, this is the horse to win. My early pick for the Magic Millions Guineas.
I’m not jumping up and down like most are re 3 Zoustyle (Bet Now: $1.80 TOP ODDS), but I concede he’s above average. Resumed over 1050m here a fortnight ago and was dynamic, leading all the way, bolting in and running good time, once again. Just has to stretch that brilliance to 1200m, and there’s no evidence to suggest he won’t.
1 Boomsara (Bet Now: $7.50) is a son of Spirit Of Boom for the Tony Gollan camp who resumed in the Zoustyle race from two weeks ago where he just got too far back in the run but closed off with real purpose to run an eye catching fourth. Extra trip will be to his liking and he can sit closer in the run if allowed to.
Race 7. (17:50) Mode Plate 1200m
3 Malahide (Bet Now: $6.00) is a very interesting runner. Daughter of Shamus Award for Michael Costa that resumes. She kicked off her career in the Winter and won 2/2 over 1200m, the second of those wins coming at this track when producing an electric turn of foot from off the pace. Loved her trial last week and she appears ready to rock and roll.
She is first up yes, but I reckon this is D-Day for 1 Outback Barbie (Bet Now: $2.50) to see if she’s a contender or pretender. Tony Gollan has tested her in the deep end since day one and has run well but hasn’t quite measured up. Back to her own age/sex back home off the back of a sharp trial, she looks the one…just want to see her do it first before diving in.
10 Singular Sensation (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Tony Gollan trained filly who I thought would run a bold race when she resumed down the straight on Cup Day but she was one of the first beat in a pretty plain effort behind Legend Of Condor. She’s better than that, so returning home could spark her into action against this lot.
Race 8. (18:25) George Moore Stakes 1200m
6 Victorem (Bet Now: $3.30) to bounce back. He, like several here, come through the Keith Noud from a fortnight ago and you could make a case he should have won. Just didn’t get the clearest of paths but when clear, he savaged the line and just missed out on picking up Most Important. He’s the horse to beat from that form reference leading into here.
2 Care To Think (Bet Now: $4.20) is the great unknown. He was the ruling favourite for the Kosciuszko before injury forced him to miss that race and instead focus on the Brisbane Summer, where he really stood up and made punters take note of how good he is. He’s a Group l talent at his best, and the trial here last was strong.
4 I’m A Rippa (Bet Now: $4.80) is indeed a ripper for Tony Gollan. He resumed in the Keith Noud where Brad Stewart sent him to the front to try and lead all the way. He led everywhere bar the final couple of strides when bloused by Most Important. Think he’ll lead again and with the run under the belt, he should be stronger at the end.
Race 9. (19:00) Mark Cotterell Master Jeweller Plate (Class 6) 1350m
Not a race I’m confident about but siding with 5 Fortensky (Bet Now: $5.00), who comes through a 1350m race at Ipswich last Wednesday where he was left flat footed when Kay Kay Boy dashed but he stuck on and was solid late. Can sit closer in the run from a good draw I think and Lloyd sticks which helps for mine.
12 Oink (Bet Now: $3.90) is a beauty for the Kelly Schweida stable who resumed at this track/distance a fortnight back where he was given such a sweet steer by Jimmy Orman and looked home, but Femme Fireball had the full momentum and race fitness to nab him on the peg. Should be better off for that and is a definite threat.
13 Realing (Bet Now: $15.00) is a son of Real Saga for Matty Dunn that resumes. This bloke raced during the Winter Carnival where his prep was highlighted by a win a Highway at Rosehill but did run well in this part of the world. Two trials leading up to his return have been quite good and 1350m fresh tells me he’s forward.
