New Years Day racing in Sydney heads to Randwick for an eight race card where the feature race is the Tatts Club Cup (2400m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:00) Happy New Year Handicap (71) 1800m
1 Bull Market (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Team Snowden trained three year old who is near a month between runs since sprouting wings from the back and nabbing stablemate Poetic Charmer right on the line to win at Rosehill. Has been accepted/scratched a few times subsequent but this looks a good assignment for him.
6 Savacool (Bet Now: $3.90) is a promising filly for the Chris Waller team who has built up a pretty good record in a short space of time. Last two runs have come over the 1550m at Canterbury and has placed both times, with the early tempo being slightly against her. She’ll eat up the Randwick 1800m here and gets Shinn steering.
5 Greenspan (Bet Now: $15.00) is the one on the up and is in the right stable. John Thompson trained son of Reliable Man who broke through for the maiden last time out at Newcastle over the mile and gee he was dominant, really attacking the line late to win with ease. He’ll have no qualms with the distance rise and has upside.
Race 2. (13:35) TAB Handicap (80) 1600m
Sticking with 4 Bastia (Bet Now: $1.75). Kris Lees trains this gelding. He gave them a galloping lesson first up at Port Macquarie before going to Rosehill a few weeks back where he tried to chase down King Darci but that horse had it soft on speed and kicked hard. Third up at the mile with more upside looks an ideal recipe for success.
1 Nothing Box (Bet Now: $3.00) on top. Chris Waller trains this gelding who resumed at Wyong where he was a drifter in betting after opening up quite short and just got too far back in the run when fifth to Poet’s Advocate, beaten just under three lengths. Form out of that has been franked and he has a really good second up record.
8 Napoleon (Bet Now: $35.00) could potentially add some value to exotics with the right. He is a stayer that resumes for Jarrod Austin after a pretty solid Winter prep, where he won two back at Newcastle in a real slog over 2900m before being tipped out after a fourth at Canterbury behind Red Dream. Been given a good hit out in two trials leading in, gets no weight on his back and can sprint well fresh.
Race 3. (14:10) Book Summer Hospitality Today Plate 1400m
Siding with 12 Stella Victoria (Bet Now: $3.70). David Payne trains this filly and she is one of the better maidens going around in Sydney at the moment. She resumed at the Canterbury midweeks where she tried really hard but couldn’t quite reel in Wooshka. The rise to 1400m on the big track with a genuine tempo, gee she’s well placed.
1 Balearic (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Chris Waller trained gelding who comes through the race mentioned above won by Wooshka. Stable told Stewards he’d be ridden with cover and that is what happened, sitting last and that was probably the wrong spot but he found the line nicely to run fourth. Should sit closer in the run and up to 1400m a definite tick.
5 Mascot (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Team Hawkes trained colt who has built up a pretty solid record but just needs to crack it for a win. Tried very hard at Canterbury last time out but had to settle for second to Wooshka. Not the worst barrier after scratchings, he’s hard fit and in form for sure. Definite threat.
Race 4. (14:45) Tatts Club Handicap (70) 1200m
6 Pirapala (Bet Now: $2.90) on top. Hayes/Dabernig trained filly who did an enormous job to win over the 1200m under the Moonee Valley lights last time out given she was wide no cover on speed and was there to beaten, but she kept finding and clung on to get the win. Like the fact the stable sends him to Sydney, he draws well and gets Collett steering.
3 Time Out Of Mind (Bet Now: $5.50) is a handy gelding for Kris Lees who rises a bit in grade/depth but he looks likely. He resumed over 1100m at Scone and the poor start was costly as he got a mile back but rocketed home to run second to Bonita, who ran well again so the form reads pretty good and up to 1200m will suit.
10 Withces (Bet Now: $5.50) is a former Godolphin mare that is fresh and having her first run for Brad Widdup. When in the Royal Blue, she was really hot and cold but on her best form, she’s definitely city class. Like what I have seen from her at the two trials, she maps to get a really good run off the pace and is a previous first up winner.
Race 5. (15:20) Youth Insearch Inspire Mile (70) 1600m
1 Jaunty (Bet Now: $5.00) for me. Chris Waller trained mare for Qatar Bloodstock who ran over the 1550m at Canterbury last time out and I thought it was the ride from Schofield that got her the win, saving the ground nearer the inside and nabbing stablemate Baysa on the peg. Think the Randwick mile will be ideal and the claim helps.
9 Regine (Bet Now: $5.50) is a John O’Shea trained up and comer who ran at Newcastle on December 23 over the mile where he was backed as if unbeatable but gee he was plain and didn’t attack the line at all behind Sensacova. Blinkers go on now to sharpen him up and I can’t ignore that market support.
10 Bolly (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Les Bridge trained mare who should love the rise to the Randwick mile. She ran over 1400m at Hawkesbury last time out where she sat last in the run and had to make a long sustained run but she attacked the post with purpose behind Allez Bien. Up to the mile with the claim for McDougall looks an ideal recipe.
Race 6. (16:00) Tatts Club Cup 2400m
1 Destiny’s Kiss (Bet Now: $5.50) for me. He is just an absolute beauty for the Joe Pride team. He ran in the Summer Cup last time out where he got into a pretty good spot, midfield just off the pace. But the tempo was an absolute crawl and he just couldn’t dash. I think this race shapes up to be a real slog, which suits him perfectly.
2 Broadside (Bet Now: $2.30) is a Waterhouse/Bott trained stayer who was dominant first up when winning the ATC Cup before going to the Christmas Cup where he attempted to lead all the way and he did give a good kick but Vassal had the pull in the weights and just had more dash when it mattered. Meets that horse 2kg better and I like Hippo steering.
6 Paragon (Bet Now: $11.00) is the one with upside and what we do know with him is that he’ll keep batting away. That was the case last time out over 2100m at Warwick Farm when slogging it out best under hard riding from Tim Clark to get the win. Good record at Randwick, right down in the weights, maps okay and as I said, he’ll keel chipping away.
Race 7. (16:40) Tab.com.au Handicap (74) 1000m
Having a throw at the stumps with 12 Tip Top (Bet Now: $20.00) ,a five year old gelding who resumes for Les Bridge. This bloke hasn’t raced since early August at Canterbury when finishing third over 1250m behind the above average Missile Code, a race which has produced three subsequent winners. Comes here with no trials, but maps to get cover off a hot speed and launch, and he can produce a decent run fresh.
5 Rose Of Man (Bet Now: $9.00) is a talented mare for Terry Robinson who was just struggling to measure up in town last prep. So Robinson tipped her out and resumed her in a sprint race at Moruya to start the prep with a confidence boost and she got it with a strong and determined win. Ridden cold, she has a booming finish on her, so look for her late.
4 Prince Mayted (Bet Now: $6.50) is an absolute ripper for the Colt Prosser team at Wauchope. He is always around the money and rarely runs a bad race. He comes here fresh after racing under the lights at Canterbury a month back where he stalked the speed and loomed large to win but couldn’t out Brookton Punch, a race which has produced three winners, including Gold Edition winner Whypeeo, so that reads very well for this.
Race 8. (17:20) ATC Handicap (74) 1400m
3 Smartedge (Bet Now: $3.20) has to overcome the sticky draw but he looks a very promising type heading towards the Magic Millions. Took on the older horses first up at Kembla where he got held up and checked, seemingly in trouble, but he picked up and I thought his last 150m was outstanding. Just has to overcome the gate.
8 Magicaz (Bet Now: $9.00) is a David Pfieffer trained mare who can be really hot and cold but with a patient steer, she can fire. Not much luck last time out at Canterbury but did have her chance in the end behind Brave Song, who bolted up at Randwick on Saturday, so that form reads very well for this assignment.
13 Our Barty (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Joe Pride trained gelding who has a pretty ordinary strike rate but he does try hard and isn’t far away for the most part. Thought he was plain last start at Hawkesbury but perhaps the weight got to him late and the dash when the leaders sprinted. Gets down in the weights and for mine appears overs.
