British horse Wigmore Hall posted a first victory at the highest level when he landed the Northern Dancer Turf at Woodbine in Toronto on Sunday.
Michael Bell’s four-year-old was produced to challenge along the rail in the straight and he kept responding to jockey Jamie Spencer’s every urging.
He made up ground on the game Simmard and eventually passed the post with a neck to spare in the 12-furlong (2400m) Group One contest with Al Khali back in third.
“He’s very brave. It was a slow pace and an extremely messy race,” Spencer said.
“I was a bit worried, but he beat a Group One winner (Poet’s Voice) over a mile in his first start of the year, so he’s got a good turn of foot.”
