The US and Australian-based stud, Spendthrift Farm, has just forked out a whopping Aust$13million to buy the 5YO mare MONOMOY GIRL (Tapizar-Drmette).
It was a stunning result for the connections who watched her win over Aus$6million in prizemoney after purchasing her for just Aus$137,000 as a yearling only four years ago.
And one of those four years she had out with injuries and surgery. At the moment, the seven times Gr 1 winner will still stay in training with her regular mentor Brad Cox.
“I was really praying she would stay in training, and with me,” said Cox.
“So there is a lot of emotion after that sale,” said Cox. “It was electric to say the least. I am hoping to meet the new connections and lobby for a 2021 campaign.”
Spendthrift Farm in Australia, based in Victoria, stand the stallions: Gold standard ($5,500); Omaha Beach ($22,000); Overshare (11,000); Swear ($5,500) and Vino Rosso ($13,750).
Buying this mare, for what effectively is a stallion price seemed excessive but remember, Spendthrift own AUTHENTIC (Into Mischief-Flawless), the recent Gr 1 Kentucky Derby winner who also last weekend won the Gr 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
That made him worth around Aus$45million. So yeah, they can afford it.
