Rio De La Plata could seek further Group One victories abroad after finishing a highly-respectable third in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
Godolphin’s flag-bearer gave his all to get within 7-1/2 lengths of the brilliant winner Frankel in the showdown and was just 2-1/2 lengths behind the runner-up Canford Cliffs.
The six-year-old entire is a three-time Group One winner on the continent and that is where connections are likely to find more opportunities for him.
“He ran a huge race. For a while I thought he was going to finish second,” trainer Saeed bin Suroor told www.godolphin.com.
“We’re happy to finish third and just a few lengths behind Canford Cliffs.
“Our horse is a Group One winner in France and Italy, so to see him finish third to Frankel in a Group One here is very good form.
“The Group Ones overseas are where he is going to win, but we’ll keep options open for him. We had to take our chance, even against the best horses in the world.”
