Red Cadeaux’s younger brother Amazing Red has put himself in the Epsom Derby picture with a decisive victory at his second start.

Like the popular Red Cadeaux, his Teofilo half-brother is trained by Ed Dunlop for Hong Kong businessman Ronald Arculli.

He went to Wednesday’s 2000m-maiden at Pontefract as the 7-2 second favourite but stretched out to beat the Godolphin’s Timekeeping (9-4) by 2-3/4 lengths.

At his first start, Amazing Red finished midfield at Newmarket.

“Given the way our horse saw out his race on the good to soft ground it would suggest that a mile-and-a-half (2400m) will not be a problem for him in time,” Dunlop said on his website.

“He is still very inexperienced and we would hope he can progress once more from this taking effort.

“He has both a Derby entry and an entry in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot and we hope further improvement will allow him to earn a place in such contests.

“Congratulations must go to Mr Arculli who of course owned his half-brother Red Cadeaux and this win will mean a huge amount to him.

“Congratulations also must go to the whole team here and to Steve and Robin especially who have always had great belief in Amazing Red and were inseparable from Red Cadeaux on his adventures.”

The most popular European horse to race in Australia, Red Cadeaux was runner-up in three of the five Melbourne Cups he contested.

He also ran second in the 2015 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Sydney.

Red Cadeaux was euthanised last November after failing to recover from surgery on a catastrophic leg injury he suffered in his final Melbourne Cup.

His ashes are interred in the pre-parade ring at Flemington Racecourse beneath a plaque honouring his feats.
