Brilliant Brisbane three-year-old Zoustyle put his critics in their place with a brilliant all-the-way win in the Listed Gold Edition Plate at Doomben.
Premier trainer Tony Gollan said he couldn’t remember enjoying a race so much after Zoustyle ($2.40) beat stablemate Outback Barbie ($3.50) by three-quarters of a length.
Caloundra three-year-old Pennino ($101) was three lengths back in third place.
Zoustyle had won his first four starts in brilliant fashion but there were some doubts about whether he could handle a good field from a wide barrier.
However, Gollan never had any doubts and was beaming after Zoustyle carved out the 1200m in a spectacular 1 min 8.23 secs which was just outside the course record.
“I really enjoyed that. As proud as I was of Outback Barbie running home into second that was a special win,” Gollan said.
“I have had a lot of good horses over the past 20 years but I don’t know if any are as good as him.
“The strange thing is that Zoustyle is only racing in Australia after failing an X-ray on his legs to go to Hong Kong.
“There is one of those stories every year. It is an example of how it isn’t the end of the world if they fail an X-ray.”
Zoustyle is now in line for a $500,000 three-year-old bonus if he can win the Vo Rogue Plate at Doomben in a fortnight.
But Gollan is yet to commit him to that race.
“He is not a Magic Millions horse so the Guineas is out of the question. I will have a good talk with the owners and then we can work out about the Vo Rogue.”
However, Outback Barbie will continue on to the Magic Millions Guineas on January 12.
“I was really proud of her today and the 1400m in the Guineas will be perfect,” Gollan said.
Winning rider Brad Stewart said Zoustyle was something special and a future star.
“He is electric when you let him go in the straight,” he said.
Jim Byrne, who rode Outback Barbie, said the filly was on course to run a huge race in the Millions Guineas.
