For the past 10 months, George Osborne has had just one race in his sights for Written Up.
And five days out from the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Reef at Flemington, the trainer is confident everything is falling into place.
The 1600m event on Saturday is restricted to horses nominated for the VOBIS Gold Series and the last-start winner of the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) is on target to peak in his fifth run of a campaign that was mapped out last June.
Osborne pinpointed the race as the logical target after Written Up finished second to May’s Dream in the Elvstroem Classic at Swan Hill as a two-year-old.
“We spelled him after that and pre-planned every race we’ve gone to this preparation,” Osborne said.
His preparation has included three other races in the VOBIS Gold Series at Caulfield, Moonee Valley and Wangaratta.
“He seems to be spot-on and I couldn’t be happier with the progress he’s made from last start to this start,” Osborne said.
“I would expect him to be pretty competitive again.”
Written Up was fifth to Trust In A Gust over 1200m at Caulfield in January before finishing second to same horse over 1500m at Moonee Valley.
Osborne freshened Written Up for the 1300m event at Wangaratta where the gelding finished third before his Bendigo Guineas success on a slow track.
The trainer believes the step up to a mile at Flemington is suitable.
“He stepped up from 1200 metres first-up at Caulfield to 1500 at Moonee Valley and spent half the race posted. The other horse (Trust In A Gust) might have been too good anyway, but we did stick on and run second.
“I think he’ll love Flemington and he’ll love 1600 metres.”
Written Up’s two wins have been on slow tracks but Osborne has not got the three-year-old pegged as a wet tracker.
“I’m pretty sure he’s pretty good on everything,” he said.
Quality filly Solicit is among the 22 nominations but is scheduled to run in the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes in Sydney on Saturday.
The Darren Weir-trained Trust In A Gust will be out to add another win in the VOBIS Gold series to his tally having scored at Ballarat, Caulfield and Moonee Valley this season.
