Jockeys’ comments on how their runners fared in the Cox Plate.

Hugh Bowman (Winx) 1st: “From the 800 metres I was very confident. At the 600 metres when leader rolled off and I went through I did not want to go too early but sometimes you don’t have choices you have to take the cards you are dealt. I was on a premium mare who was able to capitalise on the run I got.”

Michael Walker (Criterion) 2nd: “Probably should have finished bit closer but at the 550m the winner nearly put me through the fence.”

Ryan Moore (Highland Reel) 3rd: “I thought he ran a good race. Winner was impressive.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Pornichet) 4th: “Good effort. Enjoyed the tongue tie and we ran him a little differently today. He got into a nice rhythm behind Criterion and Winx. Brave run.”

James McDonald (Hartnell) 5th: “He went really good. I think he will be spot on for the Melbourne Cup over two miles so it was good effort.”

Damien Oliver (Fawkner) 6th: “Ran a good race. Worked into the race on turn but could not make up the extra ground. Winner was in another hemisphere.”

Noel Callow (The Cleaner) 7th: “He was brave. The thing he did today that he doesn’t normally do, he just wanted to lay out which is unusual.”

Brad Rawiller (Gailo Chop) 8th: I got into a bumping duel with Criterion and Mourinho inside of me. He pulled then for the next three of four hundred metres and didn’t breath properly after that.”

Nash Rawiller (Preferment) 9th: “My horse travelled well, was not really run to suit. Just the way it was run we were at our top straight away from the 700 (metres) and because of that he was a little unbalanced coming around the corner. Hit line well.”

Mark Zahra (Happy Trails) 10th: “Winner too good.”

Craig Williams (Arod) 11th: “He was a little free in the early part of the race and then we got him to switch off but he was beaten too far.”

Vlad Duric (Mourinho) 12th: “I got a bit of cover, peeled out along the side, he went with them for about 100 yards but then found them a bit too good.”

Glen Boss (Kermadec) 13th: He came off the bridle way too early in the race and obviously with this sort of pressure you need to be travelling for a lot longer than he did and he was gone a long way from home.”

James Doyle (Complacent) 14th: “It felt like something was amiss.”
