Patrick Payne is hoping to cash in on a wet winter with Moonee Valley winner Raposo.
Apprentice Jessica Payne, who is no relation to the trainer, rode the three-year-old in a last-to-first win in the Device Technologies Handicap on Saturday.
Sent out favourite, Raposo ($3.90) scored a three-quarter length victory over Valderrama ($8.50) with Kansas Sunflower ($4.40) 1-3/4 lengths away third.
Payne said Raposo would head to a 1400m race at Caulfield in two weeks time.
“He’s very good on wet ground and hopefully the tracks will stay fairly wet,” he said.
The trainer said Raposo was bred to get over more ground and came to his stable from New Zealand with a reputation for being hot-headed.
“If you rev him up he’ll get pulling mid-race, so we’re better off letting him find his feet,” Payne said.
“It looks like his manners are really good now.
“He might now get over a bit of a trip and so he might be able to win some better races.”
