Werribee Racing Club will not race on its own track until December following a Racing Victoria (RV) decision to transfer the next four race meetings to other venues.
The move is designed to allow Werribee’s new racing surface further time to consolidate.
RV will later this week announce the venues for the April 2, May 2, June 1 and July 17 meetings.
“We have made the decision to transfer Werribee’s remaining meetings this season in the long-term best interests of the track,” RV chief executive Rob Hines said.
“It is a juvenile track that is taking time to consolidate due to the unseasonal weather experienced during summer which has significantly impacted on its growth patterns.
“With the likelihood of further inclement weather during the coming months we have made a proactive decision now to protect the surface and allow it to reach its full potential.
“We sought feedback from jockeys, trainers and stewards after last Friday’s Cup meeting before reaching today’s decision.
“The Victorian Jockeys’ Association and Australian Trainers’ Association are supportive of the decision given the long-term benefits it will have for racing at Werribee.
“We are confident that this decision will allow the track the appropriate time to consolidate and that racing will return to Werribee later this year on a first-class surface.”
The track will be reopened from August or September for the visiting horses stabled at the Werribee International Horse Centre to utilise during their preparations for the 2011 Spring Racing Carnival.
The next race meeting is scheduled for December 10.
