Leading trainer Michael Freedman has launched a scathing attack on the ride of jockey Taylor Marshall in the Princess Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday, labelling it “dangerous” and expressing fears that lives were put at risk during the incident.
Freedman took to social media following the race to make his concerns clear after witnessing what he described as a near-tragic moment in the feature three-year-old fillies’ event.
“What happened in Princess Stakes at Eagle Farm yesterday was not ‘careless riding.’ It was DANGEROUS riding,” Freedman said.
“Only sheer luck saved horses and riders from a fall. Lives were put at risk.”
The incident in question occurred when Marshall shifted ground abruptly during the run, causing significant interference that had the potential for a serious accident. Although stewards conducted an inquiry and issued penalties and suspended Marshall for 21 days, Freedman felt the official punishment did not adequately address the severity of the situation.
