Jon Walk was often a giant killer as a jockey and he is hoping he can carry the tag through to training Whatalovelyday to win a Group One race.
Whatalovelyday makes a return from a short break in the Sprite Handicap(1350m) at Doomben on Saturday.
The Domesday filly cost only $5000 but has won three of her past five starts and is looming as a genuine winter carnival horse.
Walk said it was planned Whatalovelyday would tackle the Toowoomba Guineas in a fortnight and then the Caloundra Guineas on May 16.
“From there we hope to push on to the Group One Queensland Oaks on May 30. The Oaks is over 2200 metres at Doomben this year which will suit her.”
“She is the best horse I have had in a decade of training and I would love her to win a big race.”
A feature race win for Walk would be a real boost for a trainer who has only four horses in work.
But he is used to taking on the big names and beating them.
As a jockey he had a huge following among rank-and-file punters because of his ability to win races on long shots.
His most famous wins include Saints Alive who paid more than $400 on the Queensland TAB and Hot Diggity who won the Brisbane Handicap at 150-1.
“I got my love of racing from an early age and to win a Group One would obviously top things off. You have to have a dream,” Walk said.
