WA barrier attendant critical after lightning strike

A WA barrier attendant has been rushed to hospital following a lightning strike at the Northam races on Thursday afternoon.

Thursday’s Northam races were abandoned after a barrier attendant was said to have been struck by lightning although newer reports suggest he had a heart attack after lightning struck the racecourse close to where he was working.

“A Northam Race Club worker at today’s Northam race meeting suffered a heart attack. He has been taken by ambulance to hospital and is under medical care. No further information is available at this time,” RWWA CEO Richard Burt said.

The worker was sent to Northam Hospital before later being sent to Perth Hospital in which he remains in a critical condition.
