Urban Ruler is a long way off being the finished product but has done enough to earn his chance at a rich prize at Caulfield.
The two-year-old impressed his trainer Greg Eurell with his maiden victory on debut at Ballarat last month when he overcame early interference.
“He’s a big, bold free-moving horse and I can only think he’s going to be an even better product when he’s a three-year-old,” Eurell said.
“Whatever we’re getting to see at the moment, I believe, is a token of what he’ll be able to show us later on.
“I thought he did a really good job on debut. He was hampered at the start, still picked himself up and then hit the line really well.”
Urban Ruler lines up in Saturday’s $150,000 VOBIS Gold Ingot (1200m) at Caulfield and Eurell says although the gelding has done well since his debut, he is stepping up a grade.
“He’ll have to be on his game,” Eurell said.
“There’s a couple of smart ones in the race, but I do like this horse.”
The form from the Ballarat maiden has stacked up with the runner-up Stop Making Sense winning a Pakenham maiden on Sunday and fifth-placed Pyx Chamber victorious at Sandown a day earlier.
Eurell will be represented in two of the VOBIS Gold series races on Saturday with in-form We’ve Got This to run in the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Sprint.
We’ve Got This has won his past two starts at Caulfield in January and Flemington in February before being given a freshen-up to prepare for Saturday’s race.
