Lindsay Park has always had a jumper or two in its care dating back to the days patriarch Colin Hayes established the leading stable.
David Hayes, who now trains in partnership with his son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig, has carried on the tradition winning a number of feature races in Melbourne and Adelaide.
The Warrnambool jumps races haven’t featured prominently for the stable but with the condensing of the jumps season and a number of races held on the seaside track, it has become more of a focus.
On Wednesday the stable will have dual representation in the feature Galleywood Hurdle.
Honey Steel’s Gold and Dane Hussler make up a third of the runners in the 3200m-race which carries $150,000 prize money.
David Hayes says the prize money on offer is too good to ignore.
Honey Steel’s Gold strolled home to an easy win at Pakenham at his most recent start while six-year-old mare Dane Hussler, a last-start winner over 3600m on the flat, makes her seasonal jumps debut.
She strung together successive wins over hurdles at Ballarat and Morphettville during last year’s jumping season.
“She’ll go for the marathons. The Australian Hurdle and the Grand National,” Hayes said.
“She’s a good jumper and stays very well.”
Honey Steel’s Gold ran third at his jumps debut at Warrnambool in 2016 before running second to Renew in last year’s Galleywood.
Hayes says Honey Steel’s Gold will be switched to steeplechasing after he runs in the Galleywood.
At his only start over the bigger obstacles he fell at Oakbank last year.
“He doesn’t go well on those undulating tracks,” Hayes said.
“I think Sandown and Ballarat will suit him much better.
“The hills are a bit more gentle.”
Dual licence holder Steven Pateman has been entrusted with the ride on Honey Steel’s Gold with Tom Ryan booked for Dane Hussler.
Pateman is no stranger to success in the Galleywood having won the race on Black And Bent in 2012 and Brungle Cry the following year.
