The mother-daughter training partnership of Lyn Tolson and Leonie Proctor will make one of their rare appearances at a city meeting on Saturday.

The pair, who held separate licences before joining forces in the 2013-14 season, will have runners in two stakes races at Moonee Valley.

Three-year-old Well Sprung contests the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) with Just Magical lining-up in the Carlyon Stakes (1000m).

Well Sprung will be their first city runner of the new season. Last season they ventured to city tracks on just 12 occasions, registering victories at Sandown and Moonee Valley.

The pair are aiming high with Well Sprung who holds a Caulfield Guineas nomination and Tolson is of the opinion the son of Star Witness may be a better horse come the autumn.

Well Sprung goes into Saturday’s race off a narrow debut second in a maiden at Cranbourne on July 19.

“Some of the maiden three-year-olds around at the moment are quite strong,” Tolson said.

“We took him to Moonee Valley on Tuesday and Michael Walker galloped him and he gave a good report and said to give it a go.

“We had him in at Cranbourne on Sunday as well, but the owners were all keen and said we can always go back if he doesn’t perform.”

Just Magical is making his return after undergoing throat surgery.

Tolson described the surgery as the most successful to a horse she’s been associated with and said the son of Magic Albert had trialled nicely for his return.

“He raced last time with it so we bit the bullet and thought we’d get it operated on,” Tolson said.

“He seems to have come back from it really good.

“We know he’s got nice ability but you don’t know until raceday whether they have come back.”

Feature wins on the flat have been rare for Tolson with Just Look providing the biggest success in the 2008 Lord Stakes while also running third in a Blamey Stakes.

“We haven’t had a lot of flat horses run in black type races as we’re only a small stable,” she said.

“We might be biting off more than we can chew, but at least we’ll know where we are at against that class of horse.”
