Mark Newnham believes Gone Bye will continue to improve as he gets deeper into his winter preparation.

A record which suggests handy campaigner Gone Bye improves rapidly at his second start from a spell is being treated with caution by his trainer, who believes he may be a run behind schedule.

The rising five-year-old will line up in the Heineken Racing To Win Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday after resuming with a midfield performance behind Kirwin’s Lane at Rosehill on May 22.

He has a win and two placings from three second-up attempts but despite that statistic, Mark Newnham is expecting Gone Bye to take more racing to hit his straps.

“As he’s getting older, he is probably going to take another run,” Newnham said.

“He’s a good Saturday-class horse who handles wet ground. His distance is a mile to 2000 so with another run under his belt, around that 1800 to 2000 metres will probably be his go this time in.”

Gone Bye defeated subsequent Winter Cup placegetter Parry Sound over 2000m in the summer and wasn’t disgraced when sixth to stablemate Spirit Ridge in the Listed January Cup before he was spelled.

Two-year-old Colour De Roy, a colt by leading first season sire Capitalist, will chase his first metropolitan win in the opening race where he will bid to turn the tables on last start conqueror Park Avenue.

Prior to that, the youngster was a smart winner on a rain-affected track at Kembla Grange and has continued to please the stable.

“It was quite a strong race the other day, although every two-year-old race in Sydney is strong,” Newnham said.

“He’s not an overly big horse but he’s got a good racing style. He’s quick out, puts himself in the race and he’s really genuine.”

Sam Clipperton will partner Colour De Roy while apprentice Jean Van Overmeire has the ride on Gone Bye.
