Premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan has been quick to use local knowledge to have top Queensland hope Most Important primed for the Group One Doomben 10,000 on Saturday.
Rain in Brisbane on Tuesday saw work on the Doomben course proper cancelled and several stables deferred until Wednesday morning.
But Gollan switched Most Important to the dirt at Eagle Farm where he worked over 800m.
Many Brisbane trainers consider the Eagle Farm dirt track among the best training surfaces in the state.
“We probably use the dirt more than anything so when we had rain overnight it made sense to go there,” Gollan said.
Gollan was happy with Most Important’s work but realises there is a huge task ahead for the sprinter in the weight-for-age race.
“He will want to stand up to beat Redzel, In Her Time and the others,” he said.
“We were looking for a soft draw so he could get a sit on the pace or thereabouts. Barrier five again looks ideal in a field of 14.”
Most Important showed he was up to top company with his first-up second in the Group Two Victory Stakes at Doomben two weeks ago.
“It was probably his best first-up run up date but he had done a bit of work and trialled well,” Gollan said.
Gollan would dearly love to win another 10,000 after providing the quinella with the Boom Brothers, Spirit Of Boom and Temple Of Boom in 2014.
But he is taking a long-term approach with Most Important who missed the last winter carnival to concentrate on a trip to Melbourne in the spring.
“He isn’t suited at weight for age in the 10,000 and Kingsford Smith Cup but he should give them something to think about at handicap conditions in the Stradbroke next month,” Gollan said.
“But I m still expecting him to be thereabouts on Saturday.”
The Stradbroke will be run at Doomben over 1350m and Most Important has won two stakes races at the track and distance.
