Tony Gollan’s arch-rival Rob Heathcote stands as the main stumbling block to the premier trainer creating more records at Doomben.

Gollan has dominated the Brisbane summer carnival which started on November 21, winning 10 metropolitan-class races including six at stakes level for $654,000 prize money.

Heathcote has also had a good carnival with seven city wins and two seconds behind Gollan-trained horses in two stakes race.

The Gollan-trained Traveston Girl and Hopfgarten from the Heathcote stable are favourites in the last stakes race of the carnival, the $175,000 Listed Bernborough Handicap.

Feature racing then moves to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast for a month from Boxing Day.

For the past 40 years the Bernborough has been the final leg of the Brisbane summer triple crown following the George Moore Stakes and Lough Neagh Stakes.

However, since the Recognition Stakes was reduced in distance from 2100m to 1600m a decade ago, the Bernborough has also been the final leg of the summer mile treble.

Gollan has Traveston Girl and Trakstar in the Bernborough and a win by either would make him the first trainer to win both trebles in the one season.

He would also be the first trainer to take the triple crown with three different horses with Gordon Yorke the only one to achieve the feat which he did with one horse, Natural Destiny, eight years ago.

If Traveston Girl wins she will be the first horse to win all three 1600m races in the one season.

“I know Traveston Girl meets Rob’s horse Hopfgarten one-and-a-half kilos worse at the weights for beating him by a nose in the Brisbane Handicap,” Gollan said.

“But there was still improvement in her and the way the race is run will be the test.”

Heathcote is also looking forward to the race and expects Hopfgarten to be hard to beat.

“I expected Hopfgarten to be a bit soft the last 100 metres in the Brisbane Handicap because we hadn’t done much with him after his Melbourne trip,” Heathcote said.

“But he should be a lot fitter and I expect him to be hard to beat.”

He also expects his other runners Bewhatyouwannabe and Lordag to be competitive after two unlucky runs.

Hopfgarten and Traveston Girl are likely to clash again in the $1 million Magic Millions Stayers’ Trophy on January 9.
