Tony Gollan has equalled his best training performance at a metropolitan meeting with four winners at Doomben

Premier trainer Tony Gollan has equalled his best training performance at a metropolitan meeting with four winners at Doomben.

Gollan has trained a quartet winners in a day on four previous occasions and his winners on Saturday were all well backed.

His winners were Just Orm ($8), Unlikely Story ($4.60), Galtero ($2.90) and Tokoriki Lad ($4).

“It’s always good to have multiple winners and credit must go to my staff,” Gollan said.

Some of his limelight was taken when things finally fell into place for Caloundra galloper Magnufighter who broke a frustrating run of near-misses to win the Kelly Schweida Racing Handicap (1600m).

Magnufighter has rarely been far from the winners’ circle but he had not won since December when he took a Quality at Doomben.

Trainer Jack Duncan admitted it had been a frustrating time because various things went against Magnufighter at various times in his seven starts since winning.

However, that finally changed when Magnufighter ($3.20) stuck his head out on the line to beat Morendi ($20) by a long head with a nose to the favourite Silvera ($2.70).

“Things finally went right today. He had a light weight, a good barrier and there was pace on in the race to suit him,” Duncan said.

“We have had to back him up a bit quick a few times but the races were there so we chased them.”

Duncan believes Magnufighter still has plenty of racing in him this campaign and will continue to run him in Brisbane.

Baylee Nothdurft, who rode Silvera, felt the gelding should have won and fired in a protest against second placed Morendi for interference in the final 200m..

Stewards agreed and upheld the protest before upgrading Silvera to second.

The disappointment of Silvera’s defeat was tempered for Gollan who showed he had every intention to make it seven metropolitan premierships in a row.

Apprentice Nick Keal completed a great week when Just Orm gave him a double as he had earlier ridden his first Saturday city winner on The Tax Accountant.

Just Orm was considered good enough as a two-year-old to run in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic but the now six-year-old has since had a patchy career.

He was barred for three months after bleeding from both nostrils on Saturday.

Gollan also won the race he sponsored with Unlikely Story ($4.60) who scored his third win when second-up.
