The Everest picture took some shape on Saturday while an old stager earned himself another Cox Plate berth. All that and more in this weeks edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.

KEY NEWS:

Rothfire Gets Everest Slot

JJ Atkins winner Rothfire became the fourth horse confirmed for The Everest after the MiRunners panel had to bite the bullet and secure the Queenslander after there was interest from other slot holders. The three year old will resume in the Run To The Rose at Rosehill where he will take on Golden Slipper winner Farnan.

Gytrash Brilliant In Concorde

Gytrash well and truly made sure he let the racing world know he’s not making up the numbers in The Everest with a sizzling return to racing in the Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday. Sitting off a fast speed set by Ball Of Muscle and Nature Strip (800m-200m run in 31), Gytrash had the sit on that pair and proved strongest. Nature Strip lost no admirers in defeat, but it does confirm that he needs to lead to win, otherwise he gets keen in the run.

Humidor Winds Back Clock In Feehan

The genius of Chris Waller was there for all to see in the Feehan at Moone Valley when Humidor, who was recommended for retirement after his last run in WA, stunned the racing world with a brilliant finale to win the Group ll and secure a spot in the Cox Plate in what will be another attempt to win the best race Australia has to offer. Surprise Baby was very good first up in running second with Harbour Views close up in third.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:

Just can’t ignore the Chris Waller stable to get Humidor to win the Feehan first up. He could have easily been retired, he had done enough, but a section of the ownership group wanted to hand the horse to Waller for one last crack and it’s resulted in another Cox Plate start. He’s a genius Waller and proved it again here.

DEBUT OF THE WEEK:

It’ll be interesting to see how Galaxy Keeper returns next prep. Tommy Stokes, the SA man for the Phillip Stokes stable, said post race that he wanted to spell the filly, saying that her coat was awful and that she had enough, so for her to win like she did, albeit didn’t smash clock, tells me she’s above average. Whether they bring her back for the Summer months or potentially eye off the Adelaide Carnival in the Autumn.

RIDE OF THE WEEK:

Great initiative from Nash aboard Mister Sea Wolf. He was aggressive from the outset, landing in the slipstream of the leader and 400m out, it was race over. He’s a quirky horse this guy but Nash stood over him, made sure he was in a race and that proved the difference in a bunched finish. Ride won the race. His ride on Dreamforce was a beauty too.

SLAUGHTER OF THE WEEK:

The steer from Lane aboard Age Of Chivalry wasn’t flash. He seems a horse that doesn’t have gears, so after jumping well, thought he would have held a spot on speed instead of opting for cover for a few strides, then popping three wide and giving the perfect cart up to Showmanship. Horse wouldn’t have won with a better ride, but it wasn’t a flash steer.

HORSES TO FOLLOW:

Packer’s Bond – Mitch Beer is going to have plenty of fun with him. He’s very good
Trekking – Lock up the $26 for the Everest. Ran third in it last year, beat Gytrash in the Goodwood…madness the price he is
Harto – Enormous in defeat
Hungry Heart – $3 for the Flight Stakes…the race is all over if she turns up in one piece
Finche – Lovely return from him
Cordilla – Replay will speak for itself
Cumberbatch – Absolutely luckless. Goes close to winning
Showmanship – Deserves an Everest slot, but look out Golden Eagle

ONE MORE CHANCE:

Tim’s Principal – Was just warming late. He can win a Highway soon
Archanna – He wants a trip. Don’t sack him…yet
Kinane – Very tempted to be in the column below, but he gets one more chance. Just wants further
Skelm – Wait until he gets to a bigger track

NEVER EVER AGAIN:

Athiri – Yes, unlucky, but she didn’t exactly savage the line. She’s a money muncher
Avilius – The flashing light run after bludging out the back in a fast run race. Can win without me
Shared Ambition – Can win without me. Two ordinary runs now to start the prep, albeit over shorter trips
Danzdanzdance – She needs retirement or drop to Mares only races
Hanseatic – Not sure he’s up to the top level
