A star colt won a second Group l, a boom horse justified the lofty price tag while the Cox Plate picture was turned on its head. All that and more in this weeks edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.

KEY NEWS:

Incentivise Spanks Caulfield Cup Field

Not since Might And Power has the Caulfield Cup seen a more arrogant win than that of Incentivise on Saturday. The former Queenslander made some handy stayers look very ordinary, demolishing his rivals by an ever widening margin and looks to have a stranglehold on the Melbourne Cup, but that will depend on what weight he has to carry given he’ll likely cop a significant penalty for the Caulfield Cup win.

Nature Strip Climbs The Mountain

It was third time lucky for Nature Strip as the high class sprinter finally won The Everest, leading most of the way under James McDonald, fending off an unlucky Masked Crusader with Eduardo in third. Nature Strip was there to be run down but found plenty under pressure to fend them off and hang on.

RIP Sir Dragonet

Caulfield Cup Day started on a horrible note with news coming through that 2020 Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet passed away due to a freak accident in a piece of work at Moonee Valley on Saturday morning. Co trainer Ciaron Maher reported that Ben Allen, who rode in the piece of work, said the horse might have put his foot down wrong as the pace of the work was increasing and fatally smashed his leg. It was shattering news given how popular the horse was and clearly evident at Caulfield when Maher spoke to the media, with the trainer visibly shaken.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:

How can you go past Incentivise and his Caulfield Cup. As stated above, the race hasn’t seen a more arrogant win since Might And Power, something that I didn’t think was possible given how dominant that champion was. But Incentivise just blew his rivals away and seemingly only has to worry about internationals when it comes to the Melbourne Cup.

DEBUT OF THE WEEK:

Would not shock me if Espiona came to Flemington for Cup Week and found a Stakes race. Chris Waller filly that looked the part when debuting with an electric win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, and ran time in doing so. Likely goes through her grades but I’d love to see her have a crack at blacktype. She’s above average.

RIDE OF THE WEEK:

Brett Prebble is the for rider in Melbourne at the moment and that was best summed up via Durston at Caulfield on Wednesday. Around 800m-900m out, the pace came right out of the race. So Prebble on Durston, who was fresh with a big weight, made a quick three wide move but the winning move was shoving Olly aboard Alcyone back in a pocket. He had full momentum and was able to finish the job.

SLAUGHTER OF THE WEEK:

There were a few that stood out this week. Firstly on Wednesday, it’s rare to say that Olly was asleep during a race but he was aboard Alcyone at Caulfield. Just waited too long to peel out and by the time he wanted to, Prebble shoved him back in. Prebble himself didn’t produce the best of steers aboard Kapalua Sunset on Saturday. Was the horse going to win? I doubt it, but the ride wasn’t pretty. But Jaden Lloyd aboard Enterprise Prince was just ugly, ugly viewing. Missed the start, badly held up when he could have easily peeled wide. Ordinary steer.

HORSES TO FOLLOW:

Gunstock – Forgot You/Hitotsu look leading Victoria Derby candidates. Gunstock isn’t far off
Colette – Empire Rose is hers if she remains sound
Bless Her – The 1100m Mares race on Derby Day would be perfect. She’s flying
Incentivise – He can win all three. Superstar
Fangirl – Would love to see her up in trip next time. Smart filly
Edit – Good horse. Just an awful racing style

ONE MORE CHANCE:

Eagles Crag – Market said he would be legless on wet ground and so it proved
Kapalua Sunset – Ordinary ride, weak finale all the same…can’t pen her off that

NEVER EVER AGAIN:

Rubisaki – Who were the idiots that backed this horse?
Gytrash – He’s not a 1200m horse. Not at this level. 1000m/1100m is his go
Shared Ambition – Gee he was plain
High Emocean – Really surprised she was backed given the plain form around her
