The Bostonian continued his love affair with Queensland while the Group l picture for the Brisbane Winter Carnival was somewhat cleared. All that and more in this weeks edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.

Prince Fawaz Stamps Passport For Queensland

The Anthony Cummings trained youngster needed to win to assure himself a start in the JJ Atkins by winning at Randwick and he produced one of the wins of the day, overcoming interference on a couple of occasions in the straight and still picked them up to win impressively. He is now the $4.50 favourite to win the JJ Atkins after being $15 prior to the Randwick run.

Queensland Derby Picture No Clearer

There were to key lead up races for the Queensland Derby on Saturday, a 2000m race at Randwick and the Grand Prix at Eagle Farm. Nobu got the win in the last couple of strides over a horse who turned it up, Carif, and the depth of that race did look thin, likewise the Grand Prix, won by Fun Fact, with several of the more fancied runners never really in the hunt. The depth of the boys, as a whole, looks skinny, so it could be a year for a filly.

The Bostonian Loves Queensland

The Bostonian has a real liking for Queensland it seems and remained unbeaten in the Sunshine State with another big race win, following up the Doomben 10,000 triumph with a commanding performance in the Kingsford Smith Cup, aided by a peach of a steer from Michael Cahill, who saw them like beach balls at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Of those behind, be very forgiving of those back and wide, including Victorem and Ringerdingding.

Have to go back to last Sunday at Bendigo and the arrogance of Harbour Views was there for all to see. He got back on firmer footing after a debut win on a shifty Warrnambool surface and he showed his class, putting them away with absolute ease, running time and Johnny Allen barely moved. He will now run during the Swan Hill Carnival before a Spring prep, with the Ballarat Cup a possible target.

Not sure what she beat depth wise, but there was plenty to like about the debut win of Switched at Kembla on Tuesday. Loved the way she put them away over 1000m and charged right away, running really good time relative to the day. Stable can produce one early on in a prep so it’ll be interesting to see where the stable goes with this daughter of All Too Hard.

He’s copped some criticism recently has Tommy Berry, but his stats for May are relatively good and he produced an absolute peach on Strasbourg in the Sires Produce at Eagle Farm. Had the back of Accession in the run and could have followed it throughout, but Tommy got going and got into the clear on the turn and despite being 5-6 wide on the turn, he had full momentum and that was clearly the difference between winning and losing. Lovely steer. Notable mention to Billy Egan for his 12/10 on the bludger that is Street Sheik. Ride won the race at Morphettville.

Gee whiz they went silly in front in the sixth at Randwick. Zonk, Ready To Prophet and Gododdin poured the pressure on one another throughout and something from the back had to come and win, which was the resuming Charlayne. The run of Ready To Prophet to run second was actually enormous considering the mid race splits. But silly tactics from all three combined to put that kind of speed on.

Noble Boy – Back him with confidence in the Hinkler, but if he gets a run in the Stradbroke, could back him there too
Prince Fawaz – Gee he’s a serious animal and clearly the horse to beat in the JJ Atkins
Belfast Bella – Very good run off a moderate tempo. Follow her
Ready To Prophet – If that hasn’t busted her, she’ll win another race this prep
Another Dollar – Two barrier trials/runs this prep. She’s got a win near by

Jay Jay D’Ar – First look, she was poor, but not sure a wet track is her go

Chalmers – No more of him. He’s been terrible his past two
Mahalangur – Needs everything to fall into place in order to win. If that doesn’t happen, he turns it up
Muswellbrook – He’s a proper bludger
Hussy’s Glow – Similar to Muswellbrook. Very limited
