The Rosehill Carnival wrapped up on Saturday with a couple of outstanding wins in the features, while Bendigo hosted their stand alone meeting. All that and more in this weeks edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.

KEY NEWS:

Waller Mare Verry Good In Tancred

The only query was the seven day back up for Verry Elleegant in the Tancred (2400m) at Rosehill but it mattered not as she gave her rivals a good old fashioned spanking, gapping them in a brilliant staying performance after last Saturday when narrowly beaten by a world class horse. Mustajeer kept chipping away for second while Avilius, who has been really disappointing this prep, plodded on for third.

Hippo Gets First Major In Vinery Stud

The training effort from the WaterBott team was outstanding, but it was Adam Hyeronimus’ moment on the big stage, getting a well deserved Group l win when piloting Shout The Bar to a very tough on speed win in the Vinery Stud (2000m). The filly has done an amazing job in one prep, going from 1150 to the mile then straight to this 2000m against a couple of high class fillies in Funstar and Probabeel. The former was enormous in defeat after doing a stack of work in the run.

Tassie Veteran Is A Hellova Horse

His best days might be behind him, but Hellova Street still maintains a healthy zest for racing and he showed it in the feature at Bendigo on Saturday, the Golden Mile (1600m), leading throughout under Mick Dee to win impressively over a gallant Iconoclasm, who is knocking on the door. It was a real on pace dominated affair with nothing from behind really getting into the contest.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:

Has to be the WaterBott stable and what they did with Shout The Bar. Very unconventional prep for the filly en route to the Vinery Stud and dodged the good ones, going through her grades. Copped pressure in front and was entitled to drop away but just kept finding under pressure and that Tulloch Lodge bone and muscle was the difference.

DEBUT OF THE WEEK:

Was it a strong race? I’m saying no, but the win of Swats Man at Bendigo in the Gold Rush was impressive. Not easy to debut in a rich race like that but the late market support was there to suggest she’d go close and she sprinted clear late to win well. Interesting to see if she can progress from that performance.

RIDE OF THE WEEK:

Tactically, nothing special, but it was that vigour again from Tom Marquand that was the difference in the Star Kingdom when he got Vegadaze home, who was coming back in trip, but led and though strongly challenged, Marquand got stuck in big time and lifted the horse over the line. With due respect if JVO was on like he has been the past couple, no doubt Manicure wins.

SLAUGHTER OF THE WEEK:

All clear

HORSES TO FOLLOW:

House Of Cartier – If that hasn’t busted her win, she can win. Huge in defeat
Manicure – Race like the Sapphire or potentially a Godolphin Crown at Hawkesbury would be a lovely set up for her
Funstar – Enormous in defeat. Don’t sack her off that
Dealmaker – Ticking along nicely
No Committment – Blinkers back on next time please
Queen La Diva – Stable is going like an absolute busted, but this mare was a real eye catcher
Iconoclasm – He’s ready to win now

ONE MORE CHANCE:

Sausedge – Wet track, out wide, total forgive
Mount Tabora – Not one Of Tom’s best. Forget he went around
Sweet Scandal – Crying out for an inside barrier
Star Of The Seas – In the quicksand. Forget he went around

NEVER EVER AGAIN:

Life Less Ordinary – Yes, he was out wide in the no go zone…but enough is enough surely
Avilius – Every chance. He’s winning days look just about done
Adelaide Ace – Save the money and don’t go over to WA for the Derby
