The Magic Millions Carnival kicked off at the Gold Coast on Saturday with some quality racing while at Randwick, Mark Newnham won another feature. All that and more in this weeks edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.
Magic Millions Within Reach For Lindsay Park
Peter Hayes won the Magic Millions Classic in 1998 but David couldn’t win it in 30 years of trying. Could son Ben better his old man? He’ll have a live chance in the big dance next Saturday via Finance Tycoon, who was too strong for Shaquero in the Gold Nugget at the Gold Coast on Saturday. Ben Hayes said post race the horse was only 80% fit, so there will be improvement to come fitness wise. He’ll need to improve too on times, as you’ll read down below.
Filly Swiftly Enters Magic Millions Calculations
It wouldn’t be a Magic Millions without Gai Waterhouse and along with co trainer Adrian Bott, they will have a leading contender via Swift Witness, who gave them a spanking to win the Gold Pearl at the Gold Coast on Saturday. She gets the big tick from the two year old races given the Pearl was run around 5.5L faster than the Nugget.
Spirit Ridge Wins January Cup
Mark Newnham believes he has a sneaky Sydney Cup horse on his hands in the shape of Spirit Ridge after the import won his second straight Cup, this time the January Cup at Randwick on Saturday. It was a peach from Robbie Dolan from the wide gate and once he landed the 1/1, with the anchor being dropped by leader Wolfe, it was race over. The horse will now be spelled with an eye towards the Manion Cup en route to potentially the Sydney Cup.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:
I’ve been a knocker of his all prep, but credit to the WaterBott team in getting Yao Dash back into the winners list at the Gold Coast. Looked a Group l horse 18 months ago but he just hasn’t gone on with it. He was dominant at the Gold Coast and ran sizzling time, enough for me to suggest should they back up next Saturday, he’ll take some beating.
DEBUT OF THE WEEK:
Not sure she beat much, but had to be impressed by the sustained speed produced by Hi Hi Hi to win the opener at Canterbury on Friday night. Led throughout under Kathy O’Hara and she gave them a spanking from the front in an impressive first up performance. What level she gets to I’m not sure but with her racing pattern, she’ll win races.
RIDE OF THE WEEK:
Tommy Berry could have got the gong down below for his steer aboard Surjin last night, but he gets this one for a peach aboard Zing. Other riders were wondering who would take it up and Tommy took the race straight away by sending the mare to the front and from there, it was race over. Got total control and nothing from behind was beating her. Robbie Dolan on Spirit Ridge a worthy shout as well.
SLAUGHTER OF THE WEEK:
Thought there were a couple of ordinary rides on Friday night at Canterbury, but the nod goes to Sam Clipperton aboard Revitup Rednut. Sort of just half doubted whether to come wider or stay in the lane he was and hope for those out wide to drop off so he could get clear. He stayed where he was, and in turn, the eventual winner Sedition took his run and Tom Sherry kept Clipperton in. No doubt that with a clear run, Revitup Rednut wins the race.
HORSES TO FOLLOW:
Swift Witness – This win was dominant and she’s a key threat next Saturday
Texas Storm – Possibly a contender for a 1400m/1500m Highway soon. Good return
Fifteen Aria – Lost the plot when asked to go. She’s talented and should be followed
All Time Legend – He’s the only horse from his race I want. Ridden upside down yet still too good
Brutality – Race shape totally against. He can win again
Fulmina – Australia Day Cup winner
ONE MORE CHANCE:
Ramtastic – Country Cup was a bit rich for him. Back in depth/grade, he can win
Matowatakpe – Market loved. Was poor, but two weeks since resuming in a gut buster. Maybe needs a mini freshen up, not dropping off
White Hibiscus – Too bad to be true. Give her another chance
Mosh Music – Presented nearer the inside to win. Didn’t finish off. Last chance next time
Riding The Wave – Chased a brutal speed. Disappointing if you backed, but have to give him another chance
NEVER EVER AGAIN:
Meehni – The term ‘Life Ban’ gets thrown about a fair bit…this horse well and truly has a life ban
Aquis Gold Nugget As A Magic Millions Form Reference – Girls spanked boys re times. Highly doubt the MM winner comes from Nugget
Big Parade – Just not a betting proposition at the short odds given he has a couple of versions
Kyshaka – Couldn’t have asked for a better ride. Very weak finale
