Relatively quiet week in horse racing, but there was still plenty of action on the track along with a couple of surprise results. All that and more in this weeks edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.

KEY NEWS:

Maher/Eustace Sydney Show Rolls On

The Ciaron Maher/David Eustace stable is having a fab run at the moment in Sydney and their winning ways continued on Saturday at Rosehill when their much in form sprinter All Too Royal led all the way. He was well supported since Wednesday and didn’t give his fans too much cause for concern, controlling things from the front. It was an ideal pick me up for the stable given their promising juvenile Igniting flopped in the opener.

Belwazi…Bel-wtf?

The track looked a bit suspect, potentially due to irrigation, and the fast lanes down the straight were clearly out wide, so it wasn’t a total shock to see specking for Belwazi in the Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington…the shock was she actually won. Jamie Kah gave the mare a peach of a ride near the speed and clearly the wider the better down the straight, and she got to the best part of the track, finishing best over Glenall and Champagne Cuddles. She ended up starting $15 after being as much as $61 in early betting.

Winx Is Back

The wonder mare is back for her final campaign and she kicked it off with a trial at Rosehill on Tuesday morning. She wasn’t asked to do much. She settled near the back of the pack and went through the motions very nicely under Hugh Bowman, with stablemate Endless Drama winning. Another high class mare, Alizee, looked outstanding and is right on target for the All Star Mile.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:

Did we see a Slipper contender in the shape of Accession at Rosehill? Admittedly, I’m not sure he beat much, but he made them look second rate, spanking them by over four lengths and is now on the third line of betting for the Golden Slipper. Tell you what though, it does make the form very good for Athiri, who I’m really keen on wherever she heads to.

DEBUT OF THE WEEK:

Really liked the debut of Bigboyroy at Eagle Farm. Just found them a bit sharp I think over the 1000m but he stuck to the task well given he did chase the hot speed to run second to Epaumada. He’ll take a stack of improvement from that and wouldn’t be entirely shocked if he was to measure up during the Brisbane Winter Carnival potentially at blacktype level.

RIDE OF THE WEEK:

There were a few you could pick out. Tom Marquand produced a couple of gems at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, Robbie Fradd lifted Maglev at Ballina on Friday. In terms of Saturday, I the spoils have to go to Luke Currie for his steer on Laure Me In. Every move he made on the tricky animal was the right one and the horse repaid him with a brilliant finale.

SLAUGHTER OF THE WEEK:

Baylee Northduft is a talented rider. Rode a couple of sweet races at Eagle Farm, but combined it with a couple of howlers. Stopped riding Mishani Hustler, which cost it third IMO. But the ride on Fomo was just a shocker. Three/four wide no cover throughout from barrier four and the horse really had no hope from that point on. Ugly watch if you were on.

HORSES TO FOLLOW:

Harmattan- Only second up, she can keep winning
Game Keeper- He’s got a decent engine. Just no idea what he’s doing

ONE MORE CHANCE:

I wouldn’t drop off Asterius. Yes, he let me down yesterday, but take the punt/emotion out of it and the run was solid. The winner/stablemate was backed off the map and duly bolted in. He can win one of these soon. And Champagne Cuddles I wouldn’t sack. She had a gut like mine and the market told the story. She was there for a barrier trial of sorts to see if she could handle the straight given there is talk of a start in either the Lightning or Newmarket. She won’t be winning either but that explains the condition she was carrying.

NEVER EVER AGAIN:

Re Edit: Can’t back him again
Wander: Spell/provincial grade
Ordell: Becoming very costly
Deterge: Bit of a barrier trial star
Regent: Just not much good
Creedence: Non winner
Yulong September: Looks a tired horse
Mastering: Keep him as a fresh sprinter, nothing more
